I think we're probably talking about two separate issues here...
1. a crash when working with very large files: this is now fixed, as you said
in comment #2
2. a request for a safe mode for recovering documents that caused a crash
when rendered in Inkscape.

I use inkscape on ubuntu 13.10. It seems that's the 0.48.4 released. I use it
on debian testing right now.
Finaly i could recover my file.
I set the resolution to 800x600 on a single scrren, I put th maximum thread I
could on inkscape preferences and also affect more memory to inkscape buffer.
