My system is Ubuntu12.04.4 on laptop. I use "Sound Recorder" to record
via microphone, the recording process looks normal, but when played back
there is no sound heard.

Some more info:

Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
Volume: input 60%, output 60%
Mode: Analog Mono, Analog Stereo Input
Record as: .flac, .ogg, .wav, .spx (all failed)

Can play an existing .wav file.
