I do regularly update my system (desktop), but only reboot it once every
few months. Yesterday I was forced to reboot, and my uptime of 112 days
was gone. Upon reboot I ran into the same issue as this ticket
describes. Having had my fair share of X11 issues in the past, this
issue was non-trivial
Carybielenberg: I think you're typing the file contents by hand. I'm
going to need the full files. Please install the pastebinit package
(sudo apt-get install pastebinit) and paste here the links that you get
by typing the following commands:
1) grep nvidia /etc/modprobe.d/* | pastebinit
2)

sudo update-alternatives --auto x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf
sudo ldconfig
sudo update-initramfs -c -k all
sudo chmod -x /usr/bin/gpu-manager

Title:
Failed to load module nvidia
I was able to get a tiny bit further by making symbolic links to:
nvidia_drv.so and libglx.so, but then it started failing on libglx
dependencies... (I'm using xorg-edgers nvidia-343.Don't recommend
trying it but maybe it's helpful to find the issue..

Alberto: It appears that something wasn't happy still (modules were
built and everything). I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling the
nvidia packages and all seems fine now. Sorry about the noise.

I too uninstalled purged nvidia, reinstalled the drivers but I still
get thrown to black screen.
