FYI, for anyone else who might find this entry, I found two possible workarounds: a) use pdftops to convert a pdf file into a ps file that will safely print (note, this is pdftops, *not* pdf2ps) b) installing ghostscript, ghostscript-x, libgs9, and libgs9-common packages 9.16~dfsg~0-0ubuntu1
