I have not seen this before. Is it possible it's an Out Of Memory
error?
duplicity 0.7.06 is ancient and Python2.7 has been End Of Life for a
couple of years. I would suggest looking into upgrading to duplicity
1.2.3, which is the last version that will support Python2.7.

16.10 Backup Failure.

A daily backup job run by corn invokes a script that runs duplicity. Since I
have upgraded to 16.10 from 16.04 duplicity crashes with the message "killed".
It seems that the real problem is in the NVIDIA driver for my screen.
The machine does not crash
