This issue is fixed in 16.10 where the screen is turned on with black
background and shows a blurry cursor. Since support for powerpc has been
dropped from 17.04 on and will be continued for updates in 16.04 only,
it doesn't make sense to pursue this issue any further.

  After booting Ubuntu 16.04.1 on an iMac G4 PowerMac6,1 the screen
  turns white and then black. `sudo service lightdm restart` or `sudo
  service gdm restart` doesn't help. I have to type the password to
  decrypt the root filesystem blindly.
