I ran into this problem today with LO Version: 6.4.7.2. (Both the
crashes and the jagged, flickering transitions.) Is it possible that
this was never fixed?

I've tried this on a lenovo thinkpad x230 and the test slides produce a
screen-tearing effect (horizontal, jagged, flickering bar of
transparency) rather than a smooth transition. The errors reported were:

I have completed a full install of Ubuntu Gnome 17.04 on to the Dell Studio 15
laptop (ATI graphics), and then fully updated the software.

I have also tested on two more machines:
HP desktop with Intel core2duo cpu, and Intel G33 x86/MMX/SSE2 graphics. On
this machine
Tested here on artful installed (not a live CD environment) with
libreoffice 5.3.3, and I can't seem to reproduce the crash. This is with
an intel gfx card though.
Any chance you can test on an actual install? Could you maybe attach
such a presentation that triggers the crash? What version of
