Public bug reported: If I leave the login screen unattended the screensaver takes over. Wake it up and there's an orange overlay screen that can be dragged with the mouse. However it doesn't drag completely smoothly. It seems that while the clock and date are still on-screen the drag only achieves about 30 FPS. But after the clock is dragged up off-screen the rendering becomes smooth (60 FPS).
I find it strange that showing the clock/date text seems to impact rendering performance so dramatically. And I wonder if it's doing something silly like re-rendering the text on every frame...
