Workaround:
1. Add a line to /etc/environment like:
CLUTTER_DEFAULT_FPS=144
or whatever your monitor's real refresh rate is.
2. Reboot.

Seems I make a mistake here - I confused my laptop installation with
this one on my desktop machine. This one is not running the NVidia
drivers.
