You have been subscribed to a public bug: gnome shell sometimes "crashes", especially when system auto locks. The user theme shell extension disappears (standard ui then) and the dock gets partly unresponsive and does not disappears. When the system is locked, the dock is still visible and one can launch programs, which are not visible but still started. Sometimes it seems like two gnome-shell guis are overlapping each other.
