Is interoperability an official goal of ubuntu? Anybody know?
If yes, this should get fixed. Was reported 12 years ago.

If someone is still interested in opening .url files, I created a simple debian
package that handle this.
It opens URL in the default browser using xdg-open.

Am having this problem still in Linux Mint 15 with Cinnamon. Most of the
above links from 2009ff do not work anymore. Someone still has the perl
or python script to attach to this bug report, so user can fix this
issue themselves?

Except for the conflicting entry in gnome-mime-data (*.url glob in
/usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml) It doesn't appear to have been
fixed.

Works for me in Precise, but trough rundll32 (wine). Ayatana, mime-
