Stop network manager if you are not using it and Pidgin should stop thinking it is not connected. Feel free to use "Convert to a question" option.

I'm guessing this is a similar issue to the problem in firefox going to offline mode (bug 191889) because there's a switch hooked into networkmanager which is incorrectly saying there is no network present... Not sure whether this is something that should be changed in pidgin to look elsewhere for network connectivity, or should be forwarded onto networkmanager...
