Problems was fixed by restarting, unfortunately, so I don't any other
data to offer here. I didn't change any extensions, though. Not sure how
to cause the issue again to get to the root of it.
Issue happened with multiple types of apps and windows, would always go
to the first in the list of all
I also wonder if you're referring to some web app or Java where
different apps might get confused.

Also the Settings app suggests Super+backtick is the official key
sequence. But my internal settings suggest either Super or Alt should
work. You can use this command to restore that default:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-group

Please check that this isn't being caused by local extensions. You can
remove them by running:
cd ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/
rm -rf extensions
and then log in again. If the problem persists after that then please
run:
gnome-extensions list --enabled > extensions.txt
and attach the
