This was fixed in Ubuntu 11.04 and later, in a rather blunt way, by removing the "Font Rendering Details" window altogether. Anti-aliasing settings are now in the "Fonts" panel of "Advanced Settings", which -- at the default font size -- is only 480 pixels high.
