  An attached jpg shows the problem using the Stellarium star display.
  When I clock the configuration icon, which is also illegible, the
  dialog that pops up is completely garbled.

  When I run SecondLife the xserver quickly locks up and only a power
  cycle can restore control.  The sysreq magic keys are of no help.
