I get this error reported against a bunch of different programs as you
can see from log excerpt. my .xsession-errors file is huge and I have
trouble with X that I try to get to the bottom of: bug 1087535

As i get the same issue daily since a long long time, i think its coming from
either synaptic or more probably from metacity (or one of their dependencies).
But that report is so old, and gdm (no more used by default), unity-2d (that
package(s) cant be blamed, i dont use it) and metacity is on
