.xsession-errors contains the following additional lines after a failed
connect. Reckon the first three lines come from typing in the private
key. Root cause (to me) seems the unfamous Message did not recieve a
reply...-line.

Same problem for me. I'm using a certificate exported from Windows XP
(worked on Meercat).
nm-connection-editor seems to recognize it correctly (since the Save
button changes state to selectable when I enter my private key password)
but saving of the connection fails (no trace on filesystem) and
fyi, i installed from the alternate disk, not the desktop disk. what did
everyone else do?
perhaps thats why this bug is not seen so frequently?

I installed it using desktop disk and is having same problem. So I don't
think (could be wrong) this has anything to do with certificate
location.

When importation fails and you can't save the connection, please see if
there are any related errors in the file .xsession-errors in your home
directory, as well as in /var/log/syslog. There should be something
written out by either nm-applet (in .xsession-errors) or by
NetworkManager itself (in
I am attaching syslog after enabling debug logs.
syslog starts with fresh boot and after successful booting, I enabled
debug logs and reproduced the issue and then disabled the debug level.
ethernet was connected but after reproduction of issue, ethernet got
disconnected and connected again after
this is pretty embarrassing in a corporate environment, can this get
looked at soon? please? can we help provide any further info?

This seems rather unlikely to happen. Was NM properly running? It would
be good to have some debugging logs from NetworkManager as this gets
run. You can get this by following the steps at
http://live.gnome.org/NetworkManager/Debugging ; under Other
NetworkManager debugging. Turn on debugging in
