GNOME Shell does not support the sound indicator. I've no idea if they
ever plan to, so I'll just reassign the bug there.

Bug description:
  I recently switched form Unity to Gnome Shell on 11.10. When Banshee starts, 
it is not reported on the volume indicator applet --- which makes a bit 
difficult to stop it :-) 
  This is a laptop with a long series of upgrades since 9.10, so maybe it's a 
problem of "stuck" configuration. It used to work in Unity...
