I can play slide show.
I had same bug. It looks like some HW driver bug.
I can workaround problem by disabling acceleration for lo
(Tools-options-LibreOffice-view, uncheck Use hardware acceleration
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Ironlake

I can confirm the behavior of Impress, described in post #8.
A new window id created, but with empty, transparent content.
I tried on the same PC with a live USB of Sabayon linux - strangely, the slide
show starts without a problem.
I wild guess this might be connected with video driver
It's work with LibreOffice 3.5.1 on Ubuntu 12.04 beta 1

I have the same problem, even with terminal.
It creates a new window to show the slide, but with incorrect content.
You can right-click on this window, mouse wheel can change page, but nothing
refreshes.
This happens with all documents.
