Public bug reported:

The steps to change "Default Applications", in Ubuntu 12.04 (beta 2),
don't make any sense to me. Here's what you must do:

(1) Right click on Power button icon (top-right on desktop)
(2) Click System Settings.

So far, so good.

(3) Click "Details" icon

*** What? Every system setting is a "detail"! How would anyone know to
look there for "Default Application" modification? ***

(4) Click Default Applications

I propose that we either (1) Make an icon for "Default Applications" in
the main System Settings panel OR (2) do what you've done with "Startup
Applications"; place it right there in the power button's menu.

Note: Even if you make an icon especially for default applications, it
can still open up to the same management window as before (see image
attachment).

This bug report is a usability issue. I hoping to make "Default
Applications" easier to find for new users.

The fact that "Default Applications" doesn't work right now, is another bug 
that we should subscribe to as well (to emphasize its importance):
