Interestingly I'm also using an Asrock Board (H67M-GE). That indicates that
it might be a hardware issue. I flashed the latest BIOS version provided bei
Asrock (V 2.10, used to have 1.40 or 1.50
Ok, sounds like the original issue was a combination of busted hw/bios,

Using top, I can see compiz use 99-100% of CPU power.
Using ctrl+alt+f1 and killing compiz using killall -9 on tty1 allow me to
switch back to the frozen desktop for a brief time. Because thereafter compiz
will restart itself and must be stopped again.
Some people wonder why I sometimes say Ubuntu is half-finished. This and
the sorry state of gpointing-device-settings is the best proof.
If there's no way to properly set/use mice and touchpads on many
desktops/laptops, there's no way Ubuntu can gain more users. No amount
