Attached the patch for GTK+2 which makes gdk_event_apply_filters
function safe against changes in filter list. This patch is cherry-
picked from GTK+3 and adapted to GTK+2.
I've tested it in Precise, Trusty and Utopic. It applies cleanly in all
three Ubuntu releases, and mate-display-properties
Indeed, setting that particular envvar solves the problem for me as
well. Thank God you found a temporary workaround.

Im also having similar problem . Initally due to display driver update
but then it effected with failure on the display - blank screen, then
fail to login at terminal (looping) then missing launcher-desktop.. now
is like total unusable.

updates, then I upgrade to utopic and can't install libcairo2-dev. Seems
odd that the version of libcairo2-dev in trusty-updates is newer than
