Thanks for the bug report. I can see two possible problems here that
might relate to screen flicker:
* The i915 kernel driver crashed, in intel_modeset_init
* Xorg is using probably the wrong driver 'intel'. It should be using
the modesetting driver on a modern system like yours. Please try

Thanks Daniel!
I looked and somehow the Gnome Extensions page and found the top extension in
this screenshot enabled.
I can't seem to figure out how to actually uninstall these three extensions.
Are they perhaps enstalled by Ubuntu?
I have rebooted and went back to straight gnome shell
It looks like the upstream bug https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-
shell/issues/1999 was closed without a resolution. It's not "Fix
Released" so I have removed the task to avoid confusion.
