(Iain Lane points out that users of zsh are unaffected because it sets LOGNAME itself.) Development fix: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dh-make/0.59ubuntu1 Stable fix: Identical to 0.59ubuntu1, just with a different version number (0.59ubuntu0.1). http://paste.ubuntu.com/716404/ Test case: Create a dummy package (I created an empty example-0.1 directory and changed into it). Run 'env -u DEBFULLNAME -u DEBEMAIL dh_make'. If this bug is present then you'll see lots of junk in debian/changelog and debian/control rather than valid files. Regression potential: Obviously check that dh_make still actually works, but I think this update is pretty safe. Original report follows: Please read this description published on ubuntuforums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1861850 I'm also affected by this bug and I can add a little detail - dh_make put list of users to debian/changelog. Most of these users believe they are running the gnome classic session and that compiz failed to start. The fact is that notify-osd is causing the gnome-classic session to fail entirely, and the gnome-fallback session is loaded instead (which of course does not load compiz). The gnome-classic session works fine after removing notify-osd from the RequiredProviders line of the file /usr/share /gnome-session/sessions/gnome-classic.session. It should be noted that notify-osd still starts after removing it from the RequiredProviders, and seems to still be working. So most likely it is just an error in communication between notify-osd and the gnome session (inverted boolean return value perhaps?). Existing search folders contain correct mail from before the upgrade, but none since If I create a new search folder, and add a simple search filter on a single specific source folder, the filter works correctly but is applied to the wrong account If I edit the properties of a search folder, the one created previously has entries in the "Specific folders" list such as: email:1291939542.2208.31@slughorn/Fortress whereas a newly created search folder entry is always: folder:/INBOX Note that ALL entries in the list are folder:/INBOX regardless of the source IMAP account, whereas entries created in the previous version have different numbers presumably identifying the IMAP account. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 868032] Re: nautilus progress window marked skipped, not managed by gnome-shell
@pdf - The actual bug in my book is that Nautilus still has a separate window for file transfers. I think the file transfer should be converted to a gnome-shell notification, which obviates the need for handling its window. I don't know if the Nautilus devs intend to do that though, or how Unity would handle such a thing. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 868032] Re: nautilus progress window marked skipped, not managed by gnome-shell
@didrocks - thanks for the explanation, I'll look at producing a patch for this. I must admit, I didn't search the changelog, but commenting the patches themselves (as Debian do) makes this round-trip a lot more accessible and clear. @seb128 - a quick post to say this patch was related to #784804, rather than, 'shut up, stupid users' would have avoided all this additional noise (and saved you half a dozen more emails in that mailbox). 'Fixing' Nautilus rather than Unity seems like an odd choice (well, so does Unity as a whole, but we won't get into that), but I understand there was likely significant pressure to continue rushing Unity, and no time to fix the issue properly. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/868032 Title: nautilus progress window marked skipped, not managed by gnome-shell Status in GNOME Shell: Unknown Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: When running nautilus and doing a file transfer that brings up the file operations window, I noticed that the window doesn't appear in the Alt+Tab grouping for nautilus, and does not appear in the gnome-shell Windows activity or even in the thumbnail for the workspace that the window resides in. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 577563] Re: Automatic login fails and computer hangs (Lucid)
In reply to comment #1: the bug is not invalid, and this is not a local issue. See bug #888355 for detailed steps to reproduce. The combination of these two preferences makes login impossible. The user administration tool should make such combinations impossible (bug #888355), but if they do occur somehow, gdm should ask for the password so that it can decrypt the home directory. At the very least, it should raise a clear error message. Currently it gives very cryptic errors and login hangs (on Ubuntu 11.04), or it gives no error message at all and just returns you to the login screen (on Ubuntu 11.10). There's definitely room for improvement here. ** Changed in: gdm (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => Confirmed ** Changed in: gdm (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/577563 Title: Automatic login fails and computer hangs (Lucid) Status in “gdm” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Binary package hint: gdm 1) Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 2) gdm: Installed: 2.30.0-0ubuntu5 Candidate: 2.30.0-0ubuntu5 Version table: *** 2.30.0-0ubuntu5 0 500 http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 3) I expected Ubuntu to login "automatically" when booting: In the screen System > Administration > Users and Groups > Password > Change I select the box 'Don't ask for password on login' (automatic login). 4) Instead, when I boot the computer: - It boots fine until the login screen is loaded - Then I select my account on the login screen. - Next, I get a bunch of different error messages, in the following order: (1) "Could not update ICEauthority file /home/user/.ICEauthority" (2) Error message that reads something like: Problem with the configuration server, (3) Error from Nautilus: (translated from dutch): Cannot create mandatory directories: /home/user/Desktop /home/user/.nautilus (4) Update Window: "Record your encryption passphrase" > No idea what I have to do with this, if I execute the suggested action, this has no effect, and the system doesn't respond as indicated in the window itself. (5) Now I get the blank default Desktop background, with nothing on it (no menu's, links, etc.) I am sort of logged in however, because I can get a screen to shut down, restart etc., when pushing my computer's on/off button. And after a break I get the normal login window that asks my password. If I enter it, the system hangs. > Maybe this bug has to do with messed up file permissions? I have no idea. Maybe it's related to the fact that my home directory is encrypted (encryptfs) Work-around to be able to login again and turn autmatic login off: boot with recovery mode, log in manually from the command prompt, and run 'startx' to start up ubuntu. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 888355] [NEW] users-admin should not allow creation of users with encrypted home who aren't asked for password on login
Public bug reported: Tested in Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10. Steps to reproduce: 1) Go to "Users and Groups" (users-admin) 2) Click "Add" 3) Pick any name 4) Check "Encrypt home folder to protect sensitive data" 5) Click "OK" 6) Set any password 7) Check "Don't ask for password on login" 8) Click OK Expected result: An error is raised at some point, because the user will not be able to log in. Actual result: User is created normally. On login, the user is not prompted for their password, so the login fails. In Ubuntu 11.04, some cryptic error messages display and the GUI hangs; in Ubuntu 11.10, you're returned to the login screen. Since the user is not prompted for their password, the home directory cannot be decrypted, so login will fail. The two options are contradictory, and it should be impossible to select both. It might also be worthwhile if the program responsible for login (gdm?) detected this conflict and prompted the user for their password, ignoring the preference not to be prompted. However, the preferences are still logically contradictory, so the administrator should not be allowed to select both when creating a user. Bug #581303 and Bug #577563 are related, but were filed against gdm and eCryptfs. The problem should still be fixed in users-admin regardless of whether there's a workaround in gdm. ** Affects: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-system-tools in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/888355 Title: users-admin should not allow creation of users with encrypted home who aren't asked for password on login Status in “gnome-system-tools” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Tested in Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10. Want a new window browser ? out of lack file operations don't have a file menu. if no shortcut on the desktop need to run nautilus from the terminal not so sleek. Regards Roi Illouz -- Desired resolution: - Mark the window 'skipped task list' then... - When a file copy is in progress, the Nautilus Launcher icon should display the Launcher progress emblem (this should show the overall progress of all copy actions currently in flight) - Add a option to the Nautilus quicklist titled "Cancel all in-progress actions". When no Nautilus actions are in progress the option should be displayed in the inactive state, switching to the active state at the same time the 'progress emblem' appears when a copy or move action begins. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 888330] [NEW] Blank screen on lid close
Public bug reported: This option was present in 11.04, but was deleted in 11.10. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 620693] Re: Screen not locked when turned off
Let me stress that this is not a "fairly minor problem", but is a critical security vulnerability in some contexts. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/620693 Title: Screen not locked when turned off Status in “gnome-power-manager” package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in “gnome-power-manager” source package in Lucid: Fix Released Status in “gnome-power-manager” source package in Natty: Invalid Bug description: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager All settings I refer to here are gconf settings relative to /apps /gnome-power-manager unless fully qualified. If the value for timeout/sleep_display_ac (in seconds) is less than that of /desktop/gnome/session/idle_delay (in minutes) then the screen is blanked before the screensaver is activated. gnome-power-manager offers gconf options, described in its manual, for causing the screen to be locked when the screen is blanked. This can in theory be set by enabling lock/blank_screen or enabling lock/use_screensaver_settings if /apps/gnome-screensaver/lock_enabled is set. The problem is that neither of these settings appear to work. As a result, if the screen is blanked before the screensaver starts, or if the screensaver is disabled entirely, the screen does not get locked when blanked. These settings do not appear to behave as described in the manual. The manual also describes that power management timers begin only after session idle, but that doesn't appear to be the case anymore. power management timers now appear to start immediately, independent of session idle_delay. This documentation should be updated. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 888222] Re: Can't type to select folder in Nautilus
I am also running into this issue. I'm on 11.10 (full release, not beta) Repro steps 1. Launch nautilus 2. Key in the first few letters of a file or directory, until the file / directory is highlighted 3. Press enter 4. At this point, typing a lowercase character does not cause Nautilus to pop up the search text box. 5. If you press Escape, or type an uppcase character, the search box returns. However, the search box is not cleared. 6. At this point, the caret in the search textbox is blinking, therefore it would seem reasonable that pressing backspace would let you clear the box. Instead, Nautilus navigates backwards.t 7. The only way to clear the search box is to right click the box, and click delete. I may try tackling this bug, since I've wanted to get into development for awhile, but any help / advice is always appreciated. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/888222 Title: Can't type to select folder in Nautilus Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: when in ubuntu 11.10 beta I opened nautilus clicked in the main window and typed the first letters of folder 1 name until it highlighted it, then pressed "enter" which opened the folder, but inside folder 2 I cannot keep typing to search for the next folder name. The tooltip (en_GB) given is: "Simplify the Now Playing Interface by hiding the source list and more" This tooltip is not effective as it repeats the text in the button - not needed, and give a vague description of the changes. It should instead be replaced by something more informative and precise, such as: "Hide the source list, main menu, status bar and currently playing information."
