The root cause is the fd that pipe gives to USC is 0. The compositor
starts and begins drawing frames, and lightdm eventually tries writing
to fd=0 (also known as STDIN) which causes an Opperation not permitted

and rebooting, compiz fails to start. I'm able to login. I see my
wallpaper and desktop icons, but there's no window manager or panel.
A manual fix that worked in the past was
right-click, open terminal

Just to circle back around. Due to the above upower output I really
started to suspect hardware. I ended up checking the release iso, and
subsequently a certain Microsoft OS. Both also saw the same issues.
Lenovo is over-nighting me a new battery. Apparently the electronics in
the battery died

I don't think that the hinting has anything to do with the issue
