That doesn't confirm you are booted into the HWE kernel. That only shows
that certain packages are installed (which you provided already in a
previous comment).
Thanks. It looks like there is maybe a logical reconnect of the display
to the X server at the start around 14:32:29, and that could be
triggering a lot of things.
Then problems occur in:

Can you tell us which app indicator icons

Ok, here's more complete detail, for 18.04. Do same as before with
kernel param nouveau.modeset=0 (I think this is probably dumb of me, but not
sure)

sudo prime-select intel
sudo apt install bbswitch-dkms
then, the last part is a little different:
sudo gedit /etc/
And, the build process failed with Unable to build the NVIDIA kernel
module. Sigh.

whatever it is I am sure it is something I have done to it in the last
24 hrs. It was working without glitch es until I started into it. I had
hoped for more with adding the card. I am not sure If the gpu with the
intel chip wasn't doing better or if I can turn it off somehow.

I had a similar problem. turns out it was actual high load that forced
the cpu clock speed to always be more than 3GHz on all (!) cores. namely
the xorg (>100%), systemd-journald (>50%) and rsyslogd(>30%) were
consuming a lot cpu power. in the journal i could see the following line

I know this is quite old but I tried your workaround of comment #59 on Ubuntu
17.10 and it is not working.
I am using the script that you kindly provided. The only net result of running
the script manually is that Thunderbird and Dropbox are re-opened. I stress

The “feature/qt5+kde5” branch I mentioned above is now merged to master
(to become LO 6.2, which will be released early next year, so it’ll make
