[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1827440] Re: [X1 Carbon 6th, Realtek ALC285, Mic, Internal] Sound is distorted

2019-05-04 Thread Hui Wang
The sound in the #19 is not that bad.

If want to get better sound (adding the denoise filter), you could run
"pactl load module-echo-cancel", then choose the echo-cancelled input
device from gnome-sound-setting.

Bug description:
Hopefully all the necessary info is in the extra stuff that
  automatically got sent.

Basically, I didn't do anything fancy, but audio recorded with my
microphone (through Skype, and arecord in the Terminal) has tons of
static and the voice is distorted or saturated.

Booting this computer on Windows doesn't have issues, so that's why I
don't think it's the computer, I think it's the OS.

  Thanks!

Updated from Ubuntu 16.04. Applications freeze after about an hour continuous
use, while applications are running RAM use increases gradually typically from
about 55% to 100%.
The solution is to use lightdm as the display manager. Default Ubuntu DE
appears to work fine with lightdm.
I tested other DEs with gdm3 and the same problem was present. The problem
has been reported in forums
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2390915 with a number of users

Bug description:
WPA Supplicant packaged with Ubuntu doesn't support PMF. PMF support
has been available in wpa supplicant for about 3 years now and in
couple of major releases. PMF is a security feature and should be
supported (at least at the level when it needs to be manually
  enabled).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1394653] Re: gpu-manager's xorg.conf generation should be configurable

2019-05-04 Thread Paul Kenyon
I've been struggling with this for the past year, but never thought to
file a bug report. My use case is a little different, but the base
request - allow customization of the Xorg config - is the same.

My system is an Intel Skull Canyon NUC with Iris Pro integrated
graphics. I also have an external GPU box with an Nvidia 1080 Ti that
connects to the system with a Thunderbolt interface. Two displays are
connected - one to the main system's port, and one to external video
card's port.

The Nvidia driver requires an option added to the Xorg config to use the
external GPU:

Option "AllowExternalGpus" "True"

If this is not set, the Nvidia section of the Xorg config will fail, and
this cascades to Xorg not starting (i.e. login screen immediately drops
back to login screen.) Currently I work around this by editing
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/11-nvidia-prime.conf, which is generated by
gpu-manager. The problem comes when a system update occurs, and gpu-
manager is run again, re-generating the config file. Thus, it would be
beneficial to have a way to save customizations of gpu-manager's
configs.

Title:
gpu-manager's xorg.conf generation should be configurable

Status in ubuntu-drivers-common package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
There is no way to edit xorg.conf permanently, for any modification will be
removed by gpu-manager.
This is not the same issue az bug #1310489.
My system is a Dell Inspiron N7110 with nvidia optimus.
I use the closed-source nvidia drivers.
  The problem:
After a switch with prime-select intel my xorg.conf is removed, which is
required to make the intel config operational.
Upon switching back to nvidia (prime-select nvidia) gpu-manager regenerates
my xorg.conf
The problem is, that the default xorg.conf is broken (does not enable me to
use the internal laptop screen), so it needs to be modified.
This, however, can not be done now, as changes will always be overwritten.

Note the difference from #1310489: We need a way to configure the
generation, not just be able to preserve an already present file.

Basically, I didn't do anything fancy, but audio recorded with my

Booting this computer on Windows doesn't have issues, so that's why I

2019-05-04 Thread Tor Slettnes
Created attachment 151169
Screenshot showing duplicate menu

I see the same in Debian "sid", starting with LibreOffice 6.1. It only
appears when using the global "appmenu" plugin in my Window manager
(either XFCE4 or MATE), not with Gnome 3 (since the latter does not have
a "global app menu" feature anymore).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1827738] [NEW] Wrong X Window Map State

2019-05-04 Thread tombert
Public bug reported:

Testet on Ubuntu 18.04.02 LTS

Use [xwininfo] and e.g. [emacs] or [terminal] to test for map state.

Call [xwininfo] and click on the open terminal window:

xwininfo: Window id: 0x2c04847 "tombert@bionic: ~"

  Absolute upper-left X: 741
  Absolute upper-left Y: 94
  Relative upper-left X: 10
  Relative upper-left Y: 38
  Width: 734
  Height: 458

  Map State: IsViewable
  Override Redirect State: no
  Corners: +741+94 -261+94 -261-808 +741-808
  -geometry 80x24+731+56

Now iconify the terminal and call: [xwininfo -id 0x2c04847]
The "Map State" is still "IsViewable" when it should be unmapped.

The reference I found:
"3.4.2.5 Iconify and Deiconify

The big problem is that graphical applications cannot distinguish their current

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1827735] Re: DBus/MPRIS2: Totem says it is "Paused" even the stream has ended "Stopped"

2019-05-04 Thread moma
Re-hi,
Sorry for this nitpicking.
The results (from debug1.sh) were from Rhythmbox.
I meant this:

$ ./debug1.sh
org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.totem says: I AM PLAYING.
Confirmed state is: (<'Playing'>,)

Then the *LAST* song ends.

org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.totem says: I AM PAUSED.
Confirmed state is: (<'Paused'>,)

Nope. You should say stopped!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1827735] [NEW] DBus/MPRIS2: Totem says it is "Paused" even the stream has ended "Stopped"

2019-05-04 Thread moma
Public bug reported:

Hello,

Question 1:
===
When asking status of Totem via DBus/MPRIS2, it says "Paused" even the song has
ended. Shouldn't it return "Stopped" state.

I am using a small bash-script to see the DBus-messages.

$ ./debug1.sh

org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.rhythmbox says: I AM PLAYING.
Confirmed state is: (<'Playing'>,)
-

Then the song ends.

org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.rhythmbox says: I AM PAUSED.
Confirmed state is: (<'Paused'>,)

Question 2:
===
GNOME's Music player is "org.gnome.Music".

GNOME's Video player is: "org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.totem"

Why this difference?

I like both products.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1798074] Re: LIbreoffice crashes on startup

2019-05-04 Thread Stuart Langridge
Unfortunately I removed the archive version of LO and installed the snap
version, which is not exhibiting the problem, because I need to be able
to edit documents; I can therefore no longer replicate the bug. But
pleasingly it looks as though Jani can, so I'll leave it in their hands.

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:66.0) Gecko/20100101

Steps to reproduce:

Wait until it's past midnight on 2019-05-04 UTC.

Actual results:

All addons got disabled due not having valid signature.

Expected results:

If the signature was due to expire, it should have been renewed weeks
ago. Not all extensions were disabled. Fakespot and Google Scholar
Button were left in their disabled state.

Some reports on reddit [1] says that they had their clocks a day
forward, but they may be just early canaries for the actual widespread
issue.

Going backwards in time allows installation from AMO but do not remove
the unsupported mark from the add ons already installed.

Normandy is a collection of servers, workflows, and Firefox components that
enables Mozilla to remote control Firefox clients in the wild based on precise
criteria.

Reasoning: Software installed via APT should have defined states,
software should not be allowed to change itself, unless the user has
actively chosen to enable such functionality and this functionality

The current default preference (per about:config) is:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1825420] Re: package linux-image-5.0.0-13-generic 5.0.0-13.14 failed to install/upgrade: triggers looping, abandoned

2019-05-04 Thread arkmundi
Upgraded today from 18.10 and encountered same issue:
Could not install 'linux-image-5.0.0-13-generic'

The upgrade will continue but the 'linux-image-5.0.0-13-generic' package
may not be in a working state. Please consider submitting a bug report
about it.

Could not install the upgrades

The upgrade has aborted. Your system could be in an unusable state. A
recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a).

... then rebooted OK. No idea whether I'm good to go or not.

2019-05-04 Thread Jean-Louis Dupond
An option is to enable 'Studies' and wait 6 hours until you receive the
fix.

Another option seems to download & install the fix xpi manually.
Studies seem to get fetched from https://normandy.cdn.mozilla.net/api/v1/recipe/

And there you have a link to the fix:
https://storage.googleapis.com/moz-fx-normandy-prod-addons/extensions/hotfix-update-xpi-intermedi...@mozilla.com-1.0.2-signed.xpi

Download & install. Everything fixed!

don't think it's the computer, I think it's the OS.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1827727] [NEW] All plugins disabled due to expired cert

2019-05-04 Thread Jean-Louis Dupond
Public bug reported:

See https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1548973

Due to expiration of an intermediate cert, all plugins were disabled.
Firefox pushed a fix via 'Studies' option, but this seems to be disabled by
default in Ubuntu builds.

So no ubuntu user will get this fix by default.

Think we need to get a fix into repositories asap :)

Has this been pushed out to 18.04 LTS users?

I'm not seeing any updates available, but it's still crashing on launch
of the Desktop Sharing from the System Settings.

This happens because Gnome removed that particular gsettings key. The
removal did not happen with the ui removal but rather much later than
that. That is why it doesn't work with the latest version of vino.

As of now If users try to open the new sharing panel, unity-control-
center will crash. This sort behavior is not desired on LTS release
  (18.04).

The Ubuntu Error Tracker has been receiving reports about a problem regarding
unity-control-center. This problem was most recently seen with package version
15.04.0+17.10.20171225-0ubuntu1, the problem page at
https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/be6d095e2145d77c79a6e47e17c94dfe70bcaa0a
contains more details, including versions of packages affected, stacktrace or
traceback, and individual crash reports.
If you do not have access to the Ubuntu Error Tracker and are a software
developer, you can request it at http://forms.canonical.com/reports/.

  Specifically, the error report

"Settings schema 'org.gnome.Vino' does not contain a key named

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1827717] [NEW] Normandy remote control should be disabled by default

2019-05-04 Thread Tom Reynolds
Public bug reported:

While sure useful as a way to remedy the add-on intermediate signing
certificate expiry issue Mozilla has created
(https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1548973), I really think
Normandy should be disabled in Ubuntu by default:

Normandy is a collection of servers, workflows, and Firefox components that
enables Mozilla to remote control Firefox clients in the wild based on precise
criteria.
  https://mozilla.github.io/normandy/

Reasoning: Software installed via APT should have defined states,
software should not be allowed to change itself, unless the user has
actively chosen to enable such functionality and this functionality
points out, for the user, that it has this capability.

The current default preference (per about:config) is:
app.normandy.enabled;true

Title:
  gnome-shell: stray configure notify event

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in mutter package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/issues/400

  ---

When unmapping X11 client, Gnome sends a stray configure notify event,
where 'y' has been moved up by the height of the window decoration.
  Originally reported here: https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-71671

From xtrace output I see that gnome re-parents the window to the root
window and mistakenly adjusts 'y' coordinate. There are no plausible
reasons why WM should change window's coordinates when unmapping.

  000:>:01c6: Event (generated) ConfigureNotify(22) event=0x02a5
window=0x02a5 above-sibling=None(0x) x=600 y=526 width=200

parent=0x011b x=600 y=526 override-redirect=false(0x00)

  Where:

  root window id = 0x011b
0x02a5 = window which coordinates before calling unmap are x=600, y=600

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1827702] Re: Upgrade 18.10->19.04, fail to boot

2019-05-04 Thread Lucy Archer
Don't know how xorg got selected - pretty sure the problem is with grub
or with the kernel, and seeing as the 4.19.20 kernel used to work, I'm
guessing it's grub

** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => grub (Ubuntu)

  Upgrade 18.10->19.04, fail to boot

Status in grub package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I was using kernel 4.19.20 with ubuntu 18.10 and it was working fine.
Upgraded to 19.04 and it now boots approximately one attempt every 5.
Doesn't depend on the kernel I choose (I have both 4.19.20 and 5.0.0
  installed).

If I use the default Ubuntu boot entry, I get a black screen (when
normally it would prompt for the disk decryption password). If I go
to advanced options and choose a kernel (doesn't matter which one or
whether it's recovery mode or not) then I get "Loading linux
  ..." "Loading initial ramdisk ..." then nothing. Ctrl-alt-del doesn't
work, power key needs holding for 10s to turn off.

I've followed the steps to get it to print more output (gfxmode text,
remove quiet, splash, vt options) but it doesn't give any more debug.

I don't know if the problem is in grub or in the kernel. It's really
odd that it works sometimes - I haven't spotted a pattern to that yet.

I've attached a video of the boot process (I'd added an extra line to
the grub script to make it print "Booting..." after loading the
initial ramdisk, but that doesn't make a difference to whether it
works or not). Sorry about the focus - phone cameras don't like big
  blank spaces.

Happy to try more debug options, but have limited time so might not be
quick to respond. Asus Zenbook 14, in case that makes a difference.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1826604] Re: Extension causes saving files to desktop to be slow

2019-05-04 Thread Gon Solo
This hits me twofold:
1. Quitting vim in a terminal takes more than one second which is very annoying.
2. I don't want desktop icons.

My (sledgehammer) solution: "sudo rm -rf /usr/share/gnome-
shell/extensions/desktop-icons@csoriano"
