Bug description:
  Using Onboard, when trying to type a letter with accent, as á or à,
  Xorg crashes. This computer has a touch screen: some of its software
  is intended to be used with the touch screen and, as the screen can be
  rotated independently from the keyboard, the physical keyboard is not
  always available.

  As in Portuguese many words have accents, this crash would be
  extremely common.

  Regarding Xorg, I had to add the following settings to enable the
  touch screen:

Title:
  120sec delay during shutdown or reboot with still mounted cifs (via

Bug description:
  Using Ubuntu 16.04 Desktop with Unity, used the same approach in 14.04
  with no issue.

  I prepare for mounting with the following entry in /etc/fstab my
  Synology NAS :

  //192.168.178.61/data /media/server/server_data cifs
  
users,uid=1000,gid=1000,username=x,passwd=xx,iocharset=utf8,sec=ntlm,noauto,_netdev
  0

  After login to unity, I mount it with a bash-script (mount -a) which
  is called from ~/.config/autostart/myMounts.desktop

  Doing this, and shuting down or rebooting lead into a very delayed
  shutdown (round about 2 minutes) Pressing ESC Key, showed that the
  process stops at the command "umount /media/server ..."

  I have not tested if this also occurs when I am connected via
  ethernet. I think it is because the (Wifi)Network is already disabled
  prior all umounts are done.

  This issue happens even if I type in a shutdown command into a
  Terminal or if I choose shutdown form the menue, also if I use the
  power-button.

  Failure can be avoided if I umount the network-drives manually
  previouse to reboot.

  Interim solution was, to create an alias for "shutdown" like "sh
  /path/to/umount/script.sh && shutdown" in /etc/bash.bashrc.local.

When I try to open a file or attach a file or save as it can take over 20 
minutes. But the really weird thing is sometimes it is nearly instantaneous. So 
I am writing this as the problem has worsened 
- using thunderbird
- wanted to attach a file
- hung for a few minutes

I tried removing these and still had the issue BUT seems to be a longer delay 
since adding some network disks to fstab

I hope this is the correct information - have not reported a bug before.

  Using Onboard, when trying to type a letter with accent, as á or à,
  Xorg crashes. This computer has a touch screen: some of its software
  is intended to be used with the touch screen and, as the screen can be
  rotated independently from the keyboard, the physical keyboard is not
  always available.

  As in Portuguese many words have accents, this crash would be
  extremely common.

As RussianNeuroMancer correctly pointed out the bug is in the concatenation of 
the strings
MODULES_PATH, kversion, and CDC_MBIM_DRIVER_PATH into cdc_mbim_module_path.

The ending linefeed char in kversion is the culprit and it makes the dispatcher 
unable to detect the presence of a cdc-mbim module. 
usb_modeswitch will therefore not be able to automagically select the mbim 
configuration in the modem, usb_modeswitch thinks that the mbim driver is not 
present in the system.

Bug description:
  Using Onboard, when trying to type a letter with accent, as á or à,
  Xorg crashes. This computer has a touch screen: some of its software
  is intended to be used with the touch screen and, as the screen can be
  rotated independently from the keyboard, the physical keyboard is not
  always available.

  As in Portuguese many words have accents, this crash would be
  extremely common.

  Regarding Xorg, I had to add the following settings to enable the
  touch screen:

  ~400MB and improves system responsiveness a bit.

  All of the icons on my desktop visibly flash every time I change
  anything in the folder ~/Desktop, even if the change is not something

  I mean, the icons that haven't changed should never flash at all, even
  if a change is made that _does_ affect the visible display -- only the
  things that are actually new or different should change their
  appearance, and everything else should remain the same and not flash.
  But at the very least, there should be no flash when there are no
  visible changes.

Bug description:
  Using a laptop with lid closed and an external monitor, you can boot.
  Bios will show on the external monitor, as well as gdm when boot is finished.
  You can then choose a user and type in your password, which is accepted.
  But then, system goes to sleep (as the lid is cloesd I guess).

  Going out of sleep with the power button shows the gnome shell.

That does not make sense, apparently.

Changed it so the usb-modeswitch binary depends on tcl8.6, and the TCL
dispatcher is run using /usr/bin/tclsh8.6.

The tcl8.6-dev build depend proved to not be needed, so I dropped it.
Actually there is not much building happening. Not sure if that is an
indication that something is wrong...

The upstream source has a jim/ folder with a lot of stuff, but that
folder is excluded in the Debian/Ubuntu source.

  The boot process hangs with the last message being "started bpfilter".
  There is unusual Network activity during that time. The light of the
  WiFi adapter is blinking a lot.

  I am not sure the problem is with the gdm3 package. As a matter of
  fact, I would remove it and let someone more experienced to set it.
  I'm afraid I might break something, though.

  The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the 
problem: 1. Boot Ubuntu 18.10 with the Nvidia proprietary drivers
  installed.

  The behavior you expected: I expected Ubuntu 18.10 to boot normally.

  The behavior you actually encountered: The computer gets stuck in a
  command-like environment with the last message being "started
  bpfilter". You can't type any commands.

  I have found that uninstalling the Nvidia proprietary drivers by going
  into recovery mode fixes the issue.

  Booting with the earlier kernel doesn't fix the issue. Installing the
  earlier v.340 driver also doesn't fix the issue.

  This (https://askubuntu.com/questions/1032639/ubuntu-18-04-stuck-in-
  boot-after-starting-gnome-display-manager-on-intel-graphic) seems
  relevant. This is where I found the "solution".

marks are now combined as desired with the preceding base letter.

(Dotted circles still might be displayed around line wraps, as well as
under the rectangle cursor. For the latter problem, a workaround is to
choose a different cursor shape.)

I'm seeing that too in an 'Ubuntu' session but not in a 'GNOME on Xorg'
session (vanilla-gnome-desktop). I thought it might be due to today's
Yaru update but enabling the Yaru theme when using 'GNOME on Xorg' seems
fine.

Using Kodi as reference for the behaviour of VDPAU hw acceleration on
the system:

The latest version of mesa doesn't work and makes Kodi crash when opening any 
video.
I figured that when I downgrade every package of mesa to version 18.2.8, kodi 
is now able to
run videos, but still without vdpau. The behaviour improved, but without hw 
acceleration.

I meant that when I upgrade mesa with this package, I encounter the same
behaviour of the version 18.2.8 I downgraded.

Using Oibaf's ppa is the only to get vdpau acceleration working, but the image 
is too dark,
it doesn't have the bells and whistles specifically optimized for Ubuntu.

I wrote earlier that I tested disco with success, vdpau runs well and
nothing's necessary to add.

  amdgpu1 2.4.97-1ubuntu1~18.04.1

  So I grabbed the previous version from 
  https://mirror.transip.net/ubuntu/ubuntu/pool/main/libd/libdrm/

  installed libdrm-amdgpu1_2.4.95-1~18.04.1_amd64.deb

  and now Kodi returns.

I am very sorry coz after studying many webpages I end up here since
this pages covers my problem most. If it was wrong posting my problem
here just give me a hint and delete my post.

I have the above described problem:

- laptop is in docking station and 2 monitors are connected (HDMI, DVI)

- If the lid is closed and I boot the laptop I can input my credentials
in the login screen and after hitting ENTER the laptop goes to sleep

- If I then press the power button of the docking station the laptop
wakes up and goes straight to the ubuntu environment w/o any user
identification

The device is a Lenovo T420 with classic docking station. Ubuntu 18.04.3
LTS. Internal graphics Intel integrated grafics and dedicated Nvidia
Quadro NVS 4200M with propriety driver 390.116. Behavior independent of
the graphics used.

I do not know what to do now since the latest state is "fix released"
and so I guess it should be part of the ubuntu version I use?

  Going out of sleep with the power button shows the gnome shell.

symbol from kernel version string when function in C program check
presence of cdc_mbim kernel module. It can’t find cdc_mbim kernel module
because it looking in folder that doesn’t exist, so automatic changing
LTE modem mode to MBIM doesn’t happen and it stays in Ethernet mode,
which doesn’t work.

In result log which was on expired pastebin it was visible that patch
that was printed after "Let's check cdc_mbim_module_path" message
include line break. It was right after kernel version, that filled by
#define OSRELEASE_FILE "/proc/sys/kernel/osrelease"

Example:

Problem is that string in /proc/sys/kernel/osrelease include line break
symbol, and nothing in dispatcher-c-rewrite.patch drop this new line
symbol, so when check_mbim_available trying to check if cdc_mbim kernel
module is present, it looking for "4.19.0-041900-generic\n" (\n is not
visible but it's part of the string) instead of "4.19.0-041900-generic"
folder.

practice to try several times with exponential backoff.

Without this, playback is stopped until user comes back to compuiter and
hits play again, which will work in 99%, but is a drag.

  Using Onboard, when trying to type a letter with accent, as á or à,
  Xorg crashes. This computer has a touch screen: some of its software
  is intended to be used with the touch screen and, as the screen can be
  rotated independently from the keyboard, the physical keyboard is not
  always available.

  As in Portuguese many words have accents, this crash would be
  extremely common.

  Regarding Xorg, I had to add the following settings to enable the
  touch screen:

I want the desktop icons. I just don't want them to flash. And they
didn't flash before the GNOME developers thought it was a good idea to
strip them out of Nautilus.

  I mean, the icons that haven't changed should never flash at all, even
  if a change is made that _does_ affect the visible display -- only the
  things that are actually new or different should change their
  appearance, and everything else should remain the same and not flash.
  But at the very least, there should be no flash when there are no
  visible changes.

  XBMC PPA) since its release in June, but in between July 6th and 16th, I
  did upgrade the Mesa packages, from 18.2.8-0ubuntu0~18.04.2
  19.0.2-1ubuntu1.1~18.04.1. If I downgrade the “mesa-va-drivers” package
  to 18.0.0~rc5-1ubuntu1 (the version in the base, non-updates Bionic
  repository), however, Kodi works again, without even requiring me to
  restart my machine. So, this is likely a problem with “mesa-va-drivers”.
  
  I tried looking in Xorg.0.log:

Press SUPER
give search field the focus
Press SUPER+Spacebar several times until current keyboard layout is selected.
Keyboard layout indicator is visible again with current layout.



To clarify:
The bug still exists, after Suspend or Screenlock:
1) The Keyboard layout indicator is not visible
2) During the first keyboard usage after suspend, it becomes visible again 
without any further action.
3) The above manual fix is not needed.

  All of the icons on my desktop visibly flash every time I change
  anything in the folder ~/Desktop, even if the change is not something

  I mean, the icons that haven't changed should never flash at all, even
  if a change is made that _does_ affect the visible display -- only the
  things that are actually new or different should change their
  appearance, and everything else should remain the same and not flash.
  But at the very least, there should be no flash when there are no
  visible changes.

  Buggy as Kodi is, this seems to be a problem specifically with mesa-

  screen and a pause for a few moments, followed by an unceremonious
  crash-to-desktop. This happens every time I start Kodi, now.

  If I run it through the command-line, I get this:

  XBMC PPA) since its release in June, but in between July 6th and 16th,
  I did upgrade the Mesa packages, from 18.2.8-0ubuntu0~18.04.2
  19.0.2-1ubuntu1.1~18.04.1. If I downgrade the “mesa-va-drivers”
  package to 18.0.0~rc5-1ubuntu1 (the version in the base, non-updates
  Bionic repository), however, Kodi works again, without even requiring
  me to restart my machine. So, this is likely a problem with “mesa-va-
  drivers”.

  I tried looking in Xorg.0.log:

  This bug was caused after an update for the latest version of libdrm-
  amdgpu1 2.4.97-1ubuntu1~18.04.1

  So I grabbed the previous version from 
  https://mirror.transip.net/ubuntu/ubuntu/pool/main/libd/libdrm/

  installed libdrm-amdgpu1_2.4.95-1~18.04.1_amd64.deb

  and now Kodi returns.

  
  I created a bug report, the problem affects multiple users.

I don't want to switch file managers.
This should be available in the default installation.
So users can just open some "Settings" page, and check "show confirmation 
dialog when deleting files".

I think it's common practice to put application shortcuts on the desktop.
It used to work fine in previous Ubuntu releases.

I have a bunch of applications that I use frequently.
It's very convenient to have their shortcuts on the desktop.

How can a serious problem like this be ignored?

Bug description:
  Using a text editor, create a file on your Desktop that you intend to
  be a shell script. When you save it initially, it won't be executable
  (unless your text editor is too smart for its own good), so it will be
  displayed on the desktop as a text file.

  Now do "chmod +x" on the file in a terminal window.

  It's still displayed on the desktop as a text file, and you still
  can't execute it.

  Now mv it out of your desktop and into /tmp, and then mv it back onto
  your desktop. Now the icon is displayed as a shell script and can be
  double-clicked.

  The icon for a file on the desktop should turn from text file to
  executable script as soon as the file itself turns from text file to
  executable script.

  I've found the cause, and a temporary solution:

  This bug was caused after an update for the latest version of libdrm-
  amdgpu1 2.4.97-1ubuntu1~18.04.1

  So I grabbed the previous version from 
  https://mirror.transip.net/ubuntu/ubuntu/pool/main/libd/libdrm/

  installed libdrm-amdgpu1_2.4.95-1~18.04.1_amd64.deb

  and now Kodi returns.

  Mesa is now built with meson, and it turns out that meson < 0.47.0 (commit 
7c4736d27f4c5d7 to be exact) doesn't handle command line options properly which 
means that -Db_ndebug=true didn't have any effect when mesa is built on bionic. 
This means that asserts are enabled, and drivers are hitting them.

  Buggy as Kodi is, this seems to be a problem specifically with mesa-
  va-drivers.

  Kodi has worked just fine on my system, as recently as July 6th of
  this year, but yesterday (July 16) I tried Kodi again: I got a blank
  screen and a pause for a few moments, followed by an unceremonious
  crash-to-desktop. This happens every time I start Kodi, now.

  If I run it through the command-line, I get this:

  I’ve been using the same version of Kodi (“18.3 Git:20190621-89472b7”,
  package version 2:18.3+git20190621.1610-final-0bionic, from the Team-
  XBMC PPA) since its release in June, but in between July 6th and 16th,
  I did upgrade the Mesa packages, from 18.2.8-0ubuntu0~18.04.2
  19.0.2-1ubuntu1.1~18.04.1. If I downgrade the “mesa-va-drivers”
  package to 18.0.0~rc5-1ubuntu1 (the version in the base, non-updates
  Bionic repository), however, Kodi works again, without even requiring
  me to restart my machine. So, this is likely a problem with “mesa-va-
  drivers”.

  I tried looking in Xorg.0.log:

  I’m using Ubuntu MATE 18.04.2 LTS 64-bit on a Compaq Presario CQ60; if
  you need more information, I’ve attached a hardinfo report, too. I
  hope this bug can get fixed, soon. Thanks!
