[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1983000] Re: IDK

2022-07-27 Thread Aaron Rainbolt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:

1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Please also ensure that you include the release and flavour of Ubuntu
that you are using.

Thank you!

GTK file open dialog hangs Chrome/Brave

Status in gtk+3.0 package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I removed xdg-desktop-portal because I use Xorg, don't use any snaps or
flatpaks and GTK file open dialog is better than portal one.
But GTK file open dialog makes Chrome/Brave freeze after closing it.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Install Chrome or Brave
  2. Remove xdg-desktop-portal so Chrome/Brave use GTK file open dialog instead
of portal one
  3. Press Ctrl+O to open file open dialog
  4. Close dialog or choose any file, does not matter, browser is stuck

I don't see this behavior on Debian that I also use, so I guess bug is
  in GTK rather than Chrome/Brave.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1982898] Re: CVE-2021-46829: Buffer overwrite in io-gif-animation.c composite_frame() in gdk-pixbuf

2022-07-27 Thread Joshua Peisach
I can confirm for myself now aswell that I am experiencing issues. Some
applications, most of them listed above in one way or another can be
found to properly be unable to handle these images.

Gdk-pixbuf still crashes but no longer is a buffer overwrite.
Technically a win - but the key issue is apps do not know how to respond
to what to do when gdk-pixbuf dies.

Take eye of gnome - if you open a file directly from terminal using one
of the POCs, it is fine and reads the gdk-pixbuf error correctly. But
cycle to the next POC and it crashes.

Probably a lot of this is apps being tied into gdk-pixbuf, and if I am
correct it is a part of Gtk so apps are sort of forced to be connected
to it. When one breaks down, it's like a cable wire. In the future, for
stability purposes patches need to be made to apps so whenever a
component like gdk-pixbuf fails, the rest of the app doesn't (or has
some fallback state)

Title:
  CVE-2021-46829: Buffer overwrite in io-gif-animation.c
  composite_frame() in gdk-pixbuf

Status in gdk-pixbuf package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * A buffer overwrite exists in gdk-pixbuf's thumbnailer.

   * The GIF loader runs out of memory with specifically crafted files
with bad frame data (and images with its sizes) over the integer
  limit.

   * After gdk-pixbuf-thum runs out of memory, other apps can and on low
RAM systems like my old iMac, the system can completely run out of
  memory.

   * Or, in other ways, bad gif files in other applications can open the
  door for exploits.

   * Any app using gdk-pixbuf is affected, mainly file managers and
  image viewers.

  [Test Plan]

   * Take the POC's - they can be found in the issue in the GNOME repo

   * Open them in an application that uses gdk-pixbuf. I have managed to
produce reactions with:
   - Nautilus, GNOME's file manager
   - Nemo, Cinnamon's file manager
   - Thunar, XFCE's file manager, which has its own thumbnailere (tumbler) that
also inevitably fails and crashes
   - PCManFM, LXDE's file manager which straight up crashes
   - Caja, MATE's file manager causes libpixbufloader-gif to segfault (app
still usable, no memory issues)
   - Eye of GNOME (eog) triggers the segfault in syslog
   - Eye of MATE (eom) segfaults

   * If you or the system couldn't tell something is wrong, cat
/var/log/syslog and enjoy the segfaults or out of memory warnings or
  even kernel spam.

  [Where problems could occur]

   * The patch itself is simple, but since gdk-pixbuf is often used with
GTK apps a mistake here could be problematic.

   * It is possible, and has happened in the past (which has been
patched) that other bad GIFs can cause other crashes.

   * That patch is essentially overflow checks - changes with GLib
(GNOME's, not to be confused with glibc) and the functions used in not
only the patch but all of gdk-pixbuf can cause problems

   * Other failures to properly handle GIFs and broken or intentionally
tampered GIFs can continue and always will open the door for security
  holes for other bugs

  * Again, overall a simple patch but as long as the GIFs remain handled
properly, and no changes to the GLib functions are made and to other
apps that use gdk-pixbuf (and assuming are not affected by the change
and still work), the patch does not have much regression potential.

  [Other Info]

   * Besides Buffer overwrite/overflow issues, as aforementioned out of memory
errors can happen.
   * Files attached are examples or crashes
   * Again, all apps using gdk-pixbuf are affected

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1982898] Re: CVE-2021-46829: Buffer overwrite in io-gif-animation.c composite_frame() in gdk-pixbuf

2022-07-27 Thread Pedro Ribeiro
Tested on Ubuntu 22.04, it seems that EoG / EoM / gdk-
pixbuf-{pixdata,thumbnailer} try to allocate all the system's memory
with the "more_trouble.poc" from the original report.

Out of these, EoM seems not to handle it gracefully, as it gets killed
by oom-killer. The others simply give up at some point without being
killed and do not crash. Seems like a different bug that affects EoM,
but might affect other users of gdk-pixbuf too?

** Attachment added: "Crashes EoM on 22.04 with oom (might crash other
gdk-pixbuf users too)"

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1978890] Re: FIPS/OEM installation compatibility is unclear to the end-user

2022-07-27 Thread Dan Bungert
Is there a future where we can remove this warning?

The version of Subiquity on Jammy has some differences in the driver screen, so
that's done here.
https://github.com/canonical/subiquity/pull/1369

** Changed in: subiquity (Ubuntu)
Status: In Progress => Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [Overall Summary]

Converting to cover all oem/fips compatibility issues with
ua/installers/update-manager. These projects are mostly silo'd, so
when they all converge it creates a confusing and frustrating
  experience for the user.

At it's core, the problem is that both fips and oem us
GRUB_FLAVOUR_ORDER to select the preferred kernel to boot from,
  disregarding versioning.

  The main issues are:
  1. ubuntu-drivers should not attempt to `oem-ify` a `fipsified` machine
  2. ua tool should not attempt to `fipsify` an oem machine
  3. subiquity should mention that drivers page is potentially making machine
realtime & fips incompatible

Below are some reproducible examples of issues:

  ---
  (Subiquity installer case)
  [Summary]
A recent change to the subiquity snap adds support for installing oem drivers
at time of instance install. If the user installs these packages, then attempts
to install the fips packages post-install, fips will install as expected, but
the system will always boot to the oem kernel.

  [Expected Behavior]
Messaging should clearly indicate that installing the oem packages will make
the environment incompatible with fips/RT kernel/ etc.

  [Observed Behavior]
Subiquity just offers additional drivers, without clarifying the
compatibility complications.

  [Replication Steps]
(Using Dell Inc. Precision 7920 Tower/060K5C)
  1. Install from current focal ISO
  2. Confirm driver installation on the oem gui page
  3. Install ua client/fips
  4. Reboot
  5. Observe kernel version (oem)

  ---
  (update-manager case)
  [Summary]
A feature was added to allow for post-install enablement for oem-enabled
devices via update manager:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/1908050

While this works great for some situations, it can lead to users
unexpectedly installing the oem meta package + associated kernel,
overwriting an existing fips installation, as the "Improved hardware
support" bundle may not be noticed when operating update-manager

  [Expected Behavior]
For non linux-generic running installs, the post-install oem enablement
functionality should not trigger, nor should it add the additional repositories
to the client's sources.list.d.

  [Observed Behavior]
sources.list.d is updated and "Improved hardware support" is allowed as an
option in update-manager, which leads to clients unexpectedly losing compliance
in fips environments.

  [Replication Steps]
(Using Dell Inc. Precision 7920 Tower/060K5C)
  1. Install from current focal ISO
  2. Attach a ua subscription
  3. Enable the fips-updates service
  4. Reboot the system, login the desktop and wait for a while. The
notification will pop up and it will show "Improved hardware support" on the
certified machines that has the OEM metapackage support.
  5. Click through the update-manager prompt and install the oem packages
  6. Reboot check fips status

oem's config in /etc/default/grub.d/* does not have a number prefix,
and thus will always override 99-ubuntu-fips.cfg when calling update-
  grub.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1982898] Re: CVE-2021-46829: Buffer overwrite in io-gif-animation.c composite_frame() in gdk-pixbuf

2022-07-27 Thread Joshua Peisach
** Attachment added: "Eye of MATE Crash"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdk-pixbuf/+bug/1982898/+attachment/5605633/+files/EOMCrash.tar.gz

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

   * A buffer overwrite exists in gdk-pixbuf's thumbnailer.

   * The GIF loader runs out of memory with specifically crafted files
with bad frame data (and images with its sizes) over the integer limit.

   * After gdk-pixbuf-thum runs out of memory, other apps can and on low
RAM systems like my old iMac, the system can completely run out of
  memory.

   * Or, in other ways, bad gif files in other applications can open the
  door for exploits.

   * Any app using gdk-pixbuf is affected, mainly file managers and image
  viewers.

  [Test Plan]

   * Take the POC's - they can be found in the issue in the GNOME repo

   * Open them in an application that uses gdk-pixbuf. I have managed to
produce reactions with:
   - Nautilus, GNOME's file manager
   - Nemo, Cinnamon's file manager
   - Thunar, XFCE's file manager, which has its own thumbnailere (tumbler) that
also inevitably fails and crashes
   - PCManFM, LXDE's file manager which straight up crashes
   - Caja, MATE's file manager causes libpixbufloader-gif to segfault (app
still usable, no memory issues)
   - Eye of GNOME (eog) triggers the segfault in syslog
+ - Eye of MATE (eom) segfaults

   * If you or the system couldn't tell something is wrong, cat
/var/log/syslog and enjoy the segfaults or out of memory warnings or
  even kernel spam.

  [Where problems could occur]

   * The patch itself is simple, but since gdk-pixbuf is often used with
GTK apps a mistake here could be problematic.

   * It is possible, and has happened in the past (which has been patched)
that other bad GIFs can cause other crashes.

only the patch but all of gdk-pixbuf can cause problems

2022-07-27 Thread martinr
I verified that Firefox in the guest account on the 6 years old Xubuntu 16.04
Xenial works.
So bug #1981881 is NOT a duplicate of this bug, because it affects Xununtu
22.04 Jammy.

This bug affects Xubuntu 22.04 Jammy!
Marking it a duplicate of a 6 year old bug in Xenial is like saying: WILL NEVER
FIX.
Please remove the duplicate demarcation and mark it as a prominent bug in the
latest LTS version of Xubuntu Jammy and give it the attention it deserves.

Title:
  CVE-2021-46829: Buffer overwrite in io-gif-animation.c
  composite_frame() in gdk-pixbuf

   - Caja, MATE's file manager causes

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1978890] Re: FIPS/OEM installation compatibility is unclear to the end-user

2022-07-27 Thread Kyler Hornor
I'd (personally) be much more on board with a warning vs a hard block as
well.

The GRUB_FLAVOUR_ORDER issue was met with some resistance by both the
FIPs team and the OEM team. From what I gathered, GRUB_FLAVOUR_ORDER was
originally implement for the FIPS kernel, but later leveraged by OEM.

The OEM supersede was preferred by the OEM team, as OEM packages are
intended to be temporary (and only for critical functionality issues)
until adopted upstream, after which they are intended to be removed (?).

The argument from the FIPs side more leans towards the `forced` OEM
installs. This falls outside of the UA client's responsibility though,
as it can trigger before or after ua enablement via ubuntu-drivers-
common.

I'd agree that we'd want a definitive decision on preferred preference
before pulling the trigger on the UA changes though.

Bug description:
  [Overall Summary]

Converting to cover all oem/fips compatibility issues with
ua/installers/update-manager. These projects are mostly silo'd, so
when they all converge it creates a confusing and frustrating
  experience for the user.

At it's core, the problem is that both fips and oem us
GRUB_FLAVOUR_ORDER to select the preferred kernel to boot from,
  disregarding versioning.

  The main issues are:
  1. ubuntu-drivers should not attempt to `oem-ify` a `fipsified` machine
  2. ua tool should not attempt to `fipsify` an oem machine
  3. subiquity should mention that drivers page is potentially making machine
realtime & fips incompatible

Below are some reproducible examples of issues:

  ---
  (Subiquity installer case)
  [Summary]
A recent change to the subiquity snap adds support for installing oem drivers
at time of instance install. If the user installs these packages, then attempts
to install the fips packages post-install, fips will install as expected, but
the system will always boot to the oem kernel.

  [Expected Behavior]
Messaging should clearly indicate that installing the oem packages will make
the environment incompatible with fips/RT kernel/ etc.

  [Observed Behavior]
Subiquity just offers additional drivers, without clarifying the
compatibility complications.

  [Replication Steps]
(Using Dell Inc. Precision 7920 Tower/060K5C)
  1. Install from current focal ISO
  2. Confirm driver installation on the oem gui page
  3. Install ua client/fips
  4. Reboot
  5. Observe kernel version (oem)

  ---
  (update-manager case)
  [Summary]
A feature was added to allow for post-install enablement for oem-enabled
devices via update manager:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/1908050

While this works great for some situations, it can lead to users
unexpectedly installing the oem meta package + associated kernel,
overwriting an existing fips installation, as the "Improved hardware
support" bundle may not be noticed when operating update-manager

  [Expected Behavior]
For non linux-generic running installs, the post-install oem enablement
functionality should not trigger, nor should it add the additional repositories
to the client's sources.list.d.

  [Observed Behavior]
sources.list.d is updated and "Improved hardware support" is allowed as an
option in update-manager, which leads to clients unexpectedly losing compliance
in fips environments.

  [Replication Steps]
(Using Dell Inc. Precision 7920 Tower/060K5C)
  1. Install from current focal ISO
  2. Attach a ua subscription
  3. Enable the fips-updates service
  4. Reboot the system, login the desktop and wait for a while. The
notification will pop up and it will show "Improved hardware support" on the
certified machines that has the OEM metapackage support.
  5. Click through the update-manager prompt and install the oem packages
  6. Reboot check fips status

oem's config in /etc/default/grub.d/* does not have a number prefix,
and thus will always override 99-ubuntu-fips.cfg when calling update-
  grub.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1982898] Re: CVE-2021-46829: Buffer overwrite in io-gif-animation.c composite_frame() in gdk-pixbuf

2022-07-27 Thread Joshua Peisach
Hmm… check Jammy/Kinetic. Can you send me the crash file/syslog?

Some apps I think have proper handling of bad files while others don’t.
For example, EOG can detect its a bad file.

Title:
  CVE-2021-46829: Buffer overwrite in io-gif-animation.c
  composite_frame() in gdk-pixbuf

I just checked, and it seems EOM still crashes with OOM, even with the

   * Or, in other ways, bad gif files in other applications can open the
  door for exploits.

   * Any app using gdk-pixbuf is affected, mainly file managers and
  image viewers.

  [Test Plan]

   * Take the POC's - they can be found in the issue in the GNOME repo

   * Open them in an application that uses gdk-pixbuf. I have managed to
produce reactions with:
   - Nautilus, GNOME's file manager
   - Nemo, Cinnamon's file manager
   - Thunar, XFCE's file manager, which has its own thumbnailere (tumbler) that
also inevitably fails and crashes
   - PCManFM, LXDE's file manager which straight up crashes
   - Caja, MATE's file manager causes libpixbufloader-gif to segfault (app
still usable, no memory issues)
   - Eye of GNOME (eog) triggers the segfault in syslog

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1982879] Re: Multiple problems when using screenshot

2022-07-27 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Bug reporting is mostly about finding & fixing problems thus preventing
future users from hitting the same bug.

I suspect a Support site would be more appropriate, eg.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu. You can also find help with your
problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community
http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or
https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1981863] Re: gnome calendar does not sync with google calendar

2022-07-27 Thread Iñigo
Sync stopped after upgrading to 22.04 - it used to work perfectly fine
before

I've removed and added again my Google accounts but they don't sync.
Furthermore, I cannot access my Google Drive files neither from
Nautilus.

Title:
gnome calendar does not sync with google calendar

Status in gnome-calendar package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
In the newest Ubuntu stable release (22.04), gnome 42.2, gnome
calendar 41.2 does not sync calendar events from google calendar
through GOA. But when an event is created in gnome calendar, it is
synchronized with google calendar. So the synchronization works only
  in one direction.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1965208] Re: Ubuntu dock is visible too early during the login animation

2022-07-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Summary changed:

- Ubuntu dock is visible too early during the login animation in Xorg sessions
+ Ubuntu dock is visible too early during the login animation

** Tags added: kinetic

** Description changed:

- Ubuntu dock is visible too early during the login animation in Xorg
- sessions.
+ Ubuntu dock is visible too early during the login animation: It appears
+ immediately, disappears, then appears again.

- It appears immediately, disappears, then appears again.
-
- This also explains why the login animation is so stuttery in Xorg
- compared to Wayland.
+ In jammy this problem only occurred in Xorg sessions, but in kinetic it
+ now occurs in Wayland sessions.

Title:
  Print is failed via USB

Status in cups package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Phenomenon:
After installing the driver (such as RICOH IM C6000 PS) via USB protocol, it
can be printed at the first time, but after the second or multiple times, the
job will be canceled.

  Comment:
1.Wait a few minutes and the job still won't be printed.
2.After unplugging in and plugging in the USB cable, the job can be printed
3.The problem does not occur via network printing.
4.Other systems (such as Windows, Mac OS) do not have this problem.

  Our analysis:
1.We think that part of the data was lost via USB transmission

2.In CUPS ErrorLog, the job has been delivered completely.
