Title:
Large Performance Regression in gnome-shell from Ubuntu Jammy to
  Ubuntu Noble

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Test system: ARM64 Ubuntu Jammy (gnome-shell 42.9-0ubuntu2) and Ubuntu Noble
(gnome-shell 45.3-1ubuntu1)
Default Ubuntu GNOME desktop environment used with no user added extensions.

GPU driverstack identical between the two distros (eliminated as a variable).
Linux kernel identical between distros (eliminated as a variable)
CPU, GPU, and RAM clocks pinned to max.

Test case: Minecraft Java Edition (shared drive with identical setup
between Ubuntu versions). Fullscreen 1080p. Xorg display server.

  FPS (uncapped):
  Ubuntu Jammy: 177fps
  Ubuntu Noble: 140fps

  Observations:
  Ubuntu Jammy:
gnome-shell process cpu% when camera is still: 0-1%
gnome-shell process cpu% when camera is moving: 10-20%
Memory Bandwidth (CPU and GPU shared): 40%

  Ubuntu Noble:
gnome-shell process cpu% when camera is still: 20-55%
gnome-shell process cpu% when camera is moving: 30-55%
Memory Bandwidth (CPU and GPU shared): 50%

In both cases GPU utilization is observed to be near 100%.

So in summary, large performance regression regression which appears
to be due to gnome-shell. There is nearly no gnome-shell cpu% usage on
ubuntu jammy when there the camera is still (even with a fps graph
drawn onscreen) in stark contrast to ubuntu noble.

2024-02-11 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It also sounds like fullscreen direct scanout might have worked in jammy
but doesn't in noble. You can test that theory by comparing the windowed
performance between jammy and noble. Or by checking the scanout method
using MUTTER_DEBUG=kms and grepping the log for "Post" (Wayland only
though).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2052859] Re: Windows go to behind others when clicking with mouse

2024-02-11 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. Please start by removing any local
extensions:

  cd ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/
  rm -rf extensions

and then log in again.

If the problem still happens then while it is happening please run:

  journalctl -b0 > journal.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.

Windows go to behind others when clicking with mouse

Status in mutter package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
After installing ubuntu graphics-drivers ppa nvidia-550 driver, the
  bug appears.

When there are several windows on top of each other, clicking within
the topmost window, the window seems to disappear. Actually, the
window is still there, but just goes behind another window, that comes
in front of the clicked window. The program in the window that is
clicked will not notice the click.

This does not happen with all programs. Mines is a good example
program. If the window fills full screen, this happens, but if it is
smaller, only partially covering the screen, it does not happen.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1952766] Re: Disconnecting monitor crashes shell (wayland, gnome)

2024-02-11 Thread Daniel van Vugt
That assertion seems to repeat in comment #5, so it's not fatal and not
the root cause of any crash. Everyone still experiencing crashes please
open a new bug from the affected machine and follow:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Responses#Missing_a_crash_report_or_having_a_.crash_attachment

I don't think commenting here is helpful anymore. Also this bug is
already closed.

Disconnecting monitor crashes shell (wayland, gnome)

Status in gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
This bug has been persisting since I've bought an external monitor for
my laptop and started using Wayland (first on Ubuntu 20.04) until
  today (Ubuntu 21.10).

It isn't consistent, but it occurs about 90% of the time when I'm on
Wayland. On Xorg, this has never occurred.

When I unplug my USB-C monitor from my laptop, the laptop screen
freezes for a while before presenting me with the login screen. When I
log back in, all my open applications have been shut down.

I assume Mutter crashes, taking the entire session with it.

Dmesg doesn't seem to contain anything useful.

A lot of other people seem to have this problem (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1733127), but all
have been asked to file their own bug reports, so here I am.
