Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

  When using software rendering on Xorg (so usually just in VMs), some
  parts of app windows may fail to redraw.

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/2880

  [ Test Plan ]

  TODO: Figure out a minimal test plan that doesn't require modifying
  code.

  [ Where problems could occur ]

  The fix adds a new synchronization point between the compositor and X
  server. This should be inconsequential, although there is a "sync
  ring" in mutter used for this, and if a mistake occurs there then
  other parts of the desktop could appear to stop responding in Xorg
  sessions.

  [ Other Info ]

  This is a regression that started in 3.37.3 via 551101c65cda.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1833322] Re: Please consider no more having irqbalance enabled by default (per image/use-case/TBD)

2024-02-20 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
While there was sadly neither enough time not enough resources to do all
the deep dive analysis that could have been done, we succeeded by
reaching out to many more parties and got their input as well. Thank you
all!

Since Noble feature freeze is coming we need to make a call either way.
I proposed the underlying seed change [1].
And even once accepted that has to be followed by an update to ubuntu-meta.
Furthermore we'd have more follow up, like enabling it in special cases like
the AWS images for the reasons Fabio mentioned.

Of course this is just a proposal. There are many other options left,
from not changing anything to more subtle counters to my proposal like
only doing so in 24.10 to give things more time, to holding back until
someone found time/resource to gather more data.

But for now, I feel "Not enabling it by default, but enabling
selectively where identified to be wanted" seems to be the better choice
- and that is what I proposed.

  Issue/Bug Description:

  as per konkor/cpufreq#48 and
  http://konkor.github.io/cpufreq/faq/#irqbalance-detected

  irqbalance is technically not needed on desktop systems (supposedly it
  is mainly for servers), and may actually reduce performance and power
  savings. It appears to provide benefits only to server environments
  that have relatively-constant loading. If it is truly a server-
  oriented package, then it shouldn't be installed by default on a
  desktop/laptop system and shouldn't be included in desktop OS images.

  Steps to reproduce (if you know):

  This is potentially an issue with all default installs.

  Expected behavior:

  n/a

  Other Notes:

  I can safely remove it via "sudo apt purge irqbalance" without any
  apparent adverse side-effects. If someone is running a situation where
  they need it, then they always have the option of installing it from
  the repositories.

Maybe it's Mesa's fault. Yelp crashes in:

??? () at /usr/lib/aarch64-linux-gnu/dri/vc4_dri.so
??? () at /usr/lib/aarch64-linux-gnu/dri/vc4_dri.so
??? () at /usr/lib/aarch64-linux-gnu/dri/vc4_dri.so
??? () at /lib/aarch64-linux-gnu/libgbm.so.1

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  On systems equipped with reduced blanking panel, mirror mode can result to no
image on external monitor.
  The reason is due to current fallback modes don't have pixelclock for reduced
blanking, so inadequate refresh rate is used to mode set, and result with
atomic commit failure.

  [Fix]
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/3449
  Add reduced blanking (RB) to fallback modes, so mutter can use RB mode to
meet pixelclock requirement in order to pick the right refresh rate.

  [Test]
  Connect an external monitor to affected system. Use the monitor hotkey to
switch to mirror mode or use GNOME control center to choose mirror mode. With
the patch included, the issue is no longer observed.

  [Where problems could occur]
  The modelines of reduced blanking have reversed Hsync and Vsync flags, so if
the driver doesn't handle those flags correctly, the atomic modeset/commit may
fail.

  I haven't observe any issue on Intel/AMD/Nvidia GPU so far.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1958019]

2024-02-20 Thread thornley.david
I am running an 14IRP8 (Yoga Pro/Slim 9i), specifically this model
(https://psref.lenovo.com/Detail/Yoga/Yoga_Pro_9_14IRP8?M=83BU0024AU).

I have the laptop running Ubuntu 23.10 and I run mainline kernels from
Ubuntu. I have tried almost every recent kernel build up until 6.8-rc5
today (I had read that 6.8 was supposed to fix this issue). Audio is
still running only the tweaters, zero bass.

I've tried many things, notably the snd.conf (options snd-sof-intel-hda-
common hda_model=alc287-yoga9-bass-spk-pin) to no avail. Also tried
noble's firmware-sof-signed package, manually tweaking the amixer
configuration.

My alsa info -> https://alsa-
project.org/db/?f=634d31445ad5a7c4a023cdb15a07dea2a4048437

Thanks!!

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

  The KRB5CCNAME environment variable points to the Kerberos ticket of
  the current machine and this ticket is used for authentication in
  Active Directory  servers.

  This variable is set by pam_sss when the user authenticates and can be
  used by other processes, such as gio, to skip the credentials input
  when accessing network shares, for example.

  Some services rely on gvfs-daemon in order to properly function, such
  as tracker-extract-3.service and tracker-miner-fs-3.service, which
  means they will ask for the gvfs-daemon to be initialized when they
  are executed by systemd. This creates problems if one service that
  relies on gvfsd is started too early, as it would result in gvfsd
  being started too early as well.

  As of version 3.1 of tracker-miners, the install target of tracker-
  miners-fs-3.service was set to gnome-session.target:
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/tracker-miners/-/merge_requests/283

  However, the tracker-extract-3.service was not updated and its target
  is still default.target, which is too early for the service to start.

  Starting tracker-extract too early is also starting gvfsd too early,
  before the session environment gets fully updated. Which means that
  gvfsd does not have the KRB5CCNAME variable and can not do any
  operations with it.

  Tracker-extract is supposed to be a helper service managed by tracker-
  miner-fs-3.service. By using a [Install] section, we are actually
  telling systemd that it should manage this service as well, when it
  shouldn't.

  So, by removing the [Install] section and having tracker-miner-
  fs-3.service being tied to gnome-session.target, we fix the issue of
  gvfsd starting too early without the updated session environment.

  [ Test Plan ]

  In order to test this issue, it's required to have an Active Directory server
running.
  1) Authenticate with an AD user (as this would set the KRB5CCNAME env);
  2) Check gvfsd environment. This can be done by running:
  cat /proc/$(pidof gvfsd)/environ | xargs --null -n1

     You will be able to see that it does not have the variable listed.
  3) Check that the information mentioned above about tracker-miner-fs-
     3.service is true.
  4) Disable tracker-extract-3.service (This is a bit tricky, since its
     target was default.target. The easiest way is to remove the symlink that
     systemd created when enabling the unit, located under
     /etc/systemd/user/default.target.wants/tracker-extract-3.service
  5) Reboot the machine;
  6) Repeat steps 1 and 2.
     This will show that gvfsd is now started with the proper environment.

  Is not enough to look at ptree and the pids of the processes, instead
  it's better to look into the session logs with:

     journalctl --user -b

  And check the order in which the services were started and when they
  were triggered.

  Test packages are available in the following ppa:

  https://launchpad.net/~mruffell/+archive/ubuntu/sf320070-test

  After installing test packages of tracker-miners, KRB5CCNAME should be
  set in gvfs environment upon login to gnome.

  [ Where problems could occur ]

  The tracker project is a search engine that speeds up search
  operations in Gnome. The tracker-miners is the indexing daemon that
  populates the database with information, so changing its start does
  not affect the system behavior.

  This changes fix the startup of gvfs-daemon.service, which could delay
  services that relied on it running to be executed.

  [ Other info ]

  This was fixed upstream by the following commit:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2054481] [NEW] Move "enhanced tiling" into Keyboard settings

2024-02-20 Thread Joe-xenotropic
Public bug reported:

Starting in 23.10, Ubuntu introduced "enhanced tiling", which modifies
the default behavior for Super+Right so that it does not only moves the
window over to one side, but it also brings up a task-switcher for the
remaining space.

I wanted to turn this off, but did not know what it was called or what
program/library etc. was causing it. It was a change to the behavior of
a keyboard shortcut, so I went to "keyboard shortcuts". There it still
says Super+Right is "view split on right". This not accurate anymore, as
that is only half of what Super+Right does with Enhanced Tiling on.

I had to do like 15 different Google searches before finding this Ask
Ubuntu question

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1494628/how-can-i-disable-the-new-
superarrow-window-screen-aligning-feature

which finally relieved my confusion, told me the name of the behavior,
and allowed me to turn it off in the unexpected "Ubuntu Desktop"
location.

Please somehow make it clear from the keyboard settings that "enhanced
tiling" exists, since it does modify keyboard behavior to be other than
what keyboard settings says it is. You could do this by:

- having "View Split On Left" and "Enhanced Tiling To Left" be two separate
actions, and Super+left/right could be assigned to one or the other
- somehow indicate the existence of Enhanced Tiling in the description of the
keyboard action, like "View Split on left (see also Enhanced Tiling)" would
have at least let me know I needed to search for an "Enhanced Tiling" setting

See also related bug I filed for documenting Enhanced Tiling as part of
keyboard shortcuts in ubuntu-docs

  This is a regression introduced in 8u402-ga-2:

  then the sound works.
  At points during a zoom call (seems to be related to other windows/apps

  the sound dies and I have to switch profile again.
  I never had this issue with kubuntu 22.04 LTS. I have not noticed similar

  1. Join a zoom meeting

  OBSERVED RESULT
  No sound output until switching audio profile

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2043376] Re: adsys cant fetch gpos ubuntu 22.04.3

2024-02-20 Thread Gabriel Nagy
@francisreyes internally, adsys uses /run/adsys/krb5cc/$HOST as the
machine krb5 ticket (which it sources from /var/lib/sss/db/ccache_DOMAIN
in a sssd setup) - so you can mimic what adsys does by exporting
KRB5CCNAME to the path above before running the adsys-gpolist script.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2054445] [NEW] Regresion in sssd backend configuration

2024-02-20 Thread Gabriel Nagy
Public bug reported:

This is a regression from when we added support for multiple AD backends
(see https://github.com/ubuntu/adsys/pull/467)

Previously adsys would use the first domain from `sssd.conf` and
potentially override it if `ad_domain` is explicitly set for the domain,
see:
https://github.com/ubuntu/adsys/blob/32a830f2a8204cc8b896094bad512ed619fbf6b7/internal/adsysservice/adsysservice.go#L279-L280

The current implementation raises an error if we are not able to find an
`ad_domain` setting in the domain section, even if we already have a
domain (`sssdDomain`):
https://github.com/ubuntu/adsys/blob/c68d2cc999d25b1cb408a9e31775a76d2af4c8c7/internal/ad/backends/sss/sss.go#L62-L65

Ideally we should set `domain` to `sssdDomain` if we cannot find a value
for `ad_domain`, which will mimic the behavior previous to the refactor.

While by default joining a domain with `realm join` will set the
appropriate configuration values in `sssd.conf` so this doesn't happen,
this is a regression we should aim to fix.

### Steps to reproduce it

1. Join an AD domain with sssd (e.g. using `realm join`)
2. Install the latest version of adsys, run `adsysctl update -m -vv`,
everything should work
3. Comment out the `ad_domain` line from `/etc/sssd/sssd.conf`
4. `adsysctl update -m -vv` now fails, and the adsysd service does not start
anymore
5. (Optional) To confirm the functionality prior to the regression, re-attempt
the steps above on Ubuntu 22.04 using the adsys version currently in the
archive (0.9.2) -- adsys is able to correctly determine the domain even without
the `ad_domain` setting.

  Adsys can't fetch GPOs

  Can't find anything related to this on Github, Canonical Forums,

  On Ubuntu 22.04, I've followed the Wiki tutorial and verified all
  steps on Integration Ubuntu Desktop whitepaper. Currently using SSSD
  backend, I can log with Active Directory users however when adsys is
  installed I can't fetch GPOs. In this version the error is:

  ERROR Error from server: error while updating policy: can't get
  policies for "ubuntu": can't download all gpos and assets: one or more
  error while fetching GPOs and assets: can't download "ubuntuRoot":

  invalid argument

  It happens when using "adsysctl update -m" or "adsysctl update
  usern...@domain.com.br /tmp/krb5c_getentId_randomdnumber" and just
  "adsysctl update" too.

  I've upgrade the machine to 22.10 and the error changed to:

  ERROR Error from server: error while updating policy: can't get policies for
"ubuntu": failed to retrieve the list of GPO (exited with 1): exit status 1
  Failed to bind - LDAP client internal error: NT_STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER

client internal error: NT_STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER
  Failed to open session: (1, 'LDAP client internal error:

  After upgrade to 23.04 the error persist same as the above.

  Additional info:

  Domain Controller and machine are on the same subnet without firewall on any
level;
  Domain Controller is a Windows Server 2019 updated to the last security
version;
  Both machine and user are on the same OU with "no heritage" enabled and just
one policy added to permit usern...@domain.com.br to become root;
  The info header directory is "/home/jzprates" on both logs because I've
collected them using the local account using "sudo adsysctl update -m -";
  If I disable Adsys login on pam-auth-update, Ubuntu creates a homedir and
enter correctly with domain users.

2024-02-20 Thread Gwyneth Llewelyn
What we need is a libjpeg-turbo9[-dev] package, i.e. one that works
cleanly with the libjpeg 90 interface (as opposed to still using 80).

This error/bug is still extant in 2024, eight years after having been
first reported.

Status in ubuntu-meta source package in Noble:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  In removing the LXD snap from preseeding in the server seed for Ubuntu
  24.04 as part LP #2051346 [1] we also removed the snapd snap and the
  core22 snap.

  This means that are subsequent snap install, like LXD, will take much
  longer than expected for a non minimized image.

  Time taken to install LXD snap using the lxd-installer package without
  snapd and core22 preinstalled/seeded

  ```
  ubuntu@cloudimg:~$ time sudo lxd --version
  Installing LXD snap, please be patient.
  5.19
  real  0m29.107s
  user  0m0.006s
  sys   0m0.005s
  ```

  Time taken to install LXD snap using the lxd-installer package with
  snapd and core22 already installed.

  ```
  ubuntu@cloudimg:~$ time sudo lxd --version
  Installing LXD snap, please be patient.
  5.19
  real  0m15.034s
  user  0m0.005s
  sys   0m0.005s
  ```

  This is a significant difference and for a workload we intend to
  remain as a core tested and tracked workload. As such I propose we re-
  introduce core22 and snapd snaps to our seed.

  LXD do intend to move to the core24 snap as their base as I'm sure
  snapd does too so when that does happen we need to update the
  preseeded core snap.

  This bug is to track the work of making that change in the server seed
  @ https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/ubuntu-
