Title:
GUI crashed after installed proposed package libegl-mesa0

Status in linux-oem-6.1 package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in mesa package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in linux-oem-6.1 source package in Jammy:
  Won't Fix
Status in mesa source package in Jammy:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]

OEM-6.1 kernel is missing support for minimum page size of 64k on DG2
(gfx12.5). Mesa 23.2 started using that, so it broke initializing the
gpu on boot, causing a blank screen with no GDM running (with wayland,
and fallback to X failed too).

  [Fix]

Revert the commit that allows using 64k page size, since that's what
the current version in jammy-updates is using. OEM-6.1 kernel is going
away, no need to patch that anymore. No other kernel is affected, >6.2
works fine and thus this revert is not necessary in mantic or noble.

  [Test case]

Install the update, boot up a machine with DG2 (iGPU or dGPU, doesn't
matter). The login screen should appear.

  [Where things could go wrong]
Hard to see how this could regress anything, as it just restores the limits
for intel gfx12.5 as they were in the current mesa version in jammy.

  ---

  [Summary]
After installed proposed package libegl-mesa0, reboot system.

GUI crashed but still able to access system by ssh.

  [Steps to reproduce]
  1. Boot into OS
  2. sudo apt update
  3. sudo apt upgrade
  4. After upgrade process finished, reboot system.
  5. GUI crashed.

  [Expected result]
  GUI displayed normally

  [Actual result]
  GUI crashed

  [Failure rate]
  100%

if we don't upgrade libegl-mesa0, GUI will be fine.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2056185] Re: laggy and louder fans in laptop

2024-03-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. It sounds like Firefox is the issue here, but
to be sure please run 'top' in a Terminal window to confirm it is
Firefox using all the CPU.

Also be careful to avoid having too many tabs open, because modern web
browsers can easily use all the system resources if there are too many
of them.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1779890] Re: gvfsd process does not have the KRB5CCNAME environment set

2024-03-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package tracker-miners -
2.3.3-2ubuntu0.20.04.2

---
tracker-miners (2.3.3-2ubuntu0.20.04.2) focal; urgency=medium

  * Change tracker-miner-[fs,rss].service to start upon gnome-session.target
instead of default.target. default.target was too early, leading gvfs to
be started too early, which led to gvfs not collecting systemd user
session environment variables, notably KRB5CCNAME.
Remove install section from tracker-extract.service to prevent it
from being enabled by systemd. It is a helper service that should be
managed by tracker-miner-fs.service, not systemd.(LP: #1779890)

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

The KRB5CCNAME environment variable points to the Kerberos ticket of
the current machine and this ticket is used for authentication in
  Active Directory servers.

This variable is set by pam_sss when the user authenticates and can be
used by other processes, such as gio, to skip the credentials input
when accessing network shares, for example.

Some services rely on gvfs-daemon in order to properly function, such
  as tracker-extract-3.service and tracker-miner-fs-3.service, which
means they will ask for the gvfs-daemon to be initialized when they
are executed by systemd. This creates problems if one service that
relies on gvfsd is started too early, as it would result in gvfsd
being started too early as well.

As of version 3.1 of tracker-miners, the install target of tracker-
  miners-fs-3.service was set to gnome-session.target:
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/tracker-miners/-/merge_requests/283

However, the tracker-extract-3.service was not updated and its target
is still default.target, which is too early for the service to start.

Starting tracker-extract too early is also starting gvfsd too early,
before the session environment gets fully updated. Which means that
gvfsd does not have the KRB5CCNAME variable and can not do any
  operations with it.

Tracker-extract is supposed to be a helper service managed by tracker-
miner-fs-3.service. By using a [Install] section, we are actually
telling systemd that it should manage this service as well, when it
  shouldn't.

So, by removing the [Install] section and having tracker-miner-
fs-3.service being tied to gnome-session.target, we fix the issue of
gvfsd starting too early without the updated session environment.

  [ Test Plan ]

In order to test this issue, it's required to have an Active Directory server
running.
  1) Authenticate with an AD user (as this would set the KRB5CCNAME env);
  2) Check gvfsd environment. This can be done by running:
  cat /proc/$(pidof gvfsd)/environ | xargs --null -n1

You will be able to see that it does not have the variable listed.
  3) Check that the information mentioned above about tracker-miner-fs-
     3.service is true.
  4) Disable tracker-extract-3.service (This is a bit tricky, since its
target was default.target. The easiest way is to remove the symlink that
systemd created when enabling the unit, located under
     /etc/systemd/user/default.target.wants/tracker-extract-3.service
  5) Reboot the machine;
  6) Repeat steps 1 and 2.
This will show that gvfsd is now started with the proper environment.

Is not enough to look at ptree and the pids of the processes, instead
it's better to look into the session logs with:

     journalctl --user -b

And check the order in which the services were started and when they
  were triggered.

Test packages are available in the following ppa:

  https://launchpad.net/~mruffell/+archive/ubuntu/sf320070-test

After installing test packages of tracker-miners, KRB5CCNAME should be
set in gvfs environment upon login to

Status in Mutter:

Bug description:
Test system: ARM64 Ubuntu Jammy (gnome-shell 42.9-0ubuntu2) and Ubuntu Noble
(gnome-shell 45.3-1ubuntu1)
Default Ubuntu GNOME desktop environment used with no user added extensions.

GPU driverstack identical between the two distros (eliminated as a variable).
Linux kernel identical between distros (eliminated as a variable)
CPU, GPU, and RAM clocks pinned to max.

Test case: Minecraft Java Edition (shared drive with identical setup
between Ubuntu versions). Fullscreen 1080p. Xorg display server.

  FPS (uncapped):
  Ubuntu Jammy: 177fps
  Ubuntu Noble: 140fps

  Observations:
  Ubuntu Jammy:
gnome-shell process cpu% when camera is still: 0-1%
gnome-shell process cpu% when camera is moving: 10-20%
Memory Bandwidth (CPU and GPU shared): 40%

  Ubuntu Noble:
gnome-shell process cpu% when camera is still: 20-55%
gnome-shell process cpu% when camera is moving: 30-55%
Memory Bandwidth (CPU and GPU shared): 50%

In both cases GPU utilization is observed to be near 100%.

So in summary, large performance regression regression which appears
to be due to gnome-shell. There is nearly no gnome-shell cpu% usage on
ubuntu jammy when there the camera is still (even with a fps graph
drawn onscreen) in stark contrast to ubuntu noble.

Bug description:
I have installed Firefox snap version in order to be able to post the
bug report on that program, but the bug or problem affects all
browsers based on Firefox that I was able to test, with the notable
  exception of the flatpak versions.

Firefox (snap, appimage and local) and browsers based on current
Firefox, as well as nightly version of Firefox (installed as deb or
local/portable) don't work after update to Kubuntu 24.04. This happens
in both X11 and Wayland sessions, with both empty/new profile and my
  customized one.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2056209] Re: Incorrect Info In About Section

2024-03-05 Thread Jeremy Bícha
In Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, the "GNOME" version comes from the version of
gnome-desktop3, not the version of gnome-shell. At this point, we are
very unlikely to update gnome-desktop3 for that minor issue.

Similarly, we aren't going to update a 4 year old Ubuntu release to
adjust how RAM is reported in gnome-control-center. The difference you
noticed might be seen if your system has integrated graphics (like with
Intel) and some of the RAM is used by the graphics card.

I am closing this bug since there is no action we will take here and the
issues are minor.

If you still experience this or similar issues on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or
the development version of Ubuntu, please open a new bug. Also, please
open one bug per issue. You mentioned multiple issues in this bug.

** Changed in: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Invalid

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2056217] [NEW] nmcli regression: can't set IPV6 token

2024-03-05 Thread Charles Hedrick
Public bug reported:

24.04 nightly, downloaded Mar 5.

network-manager 1.45.90-1ubuntu1

In network manager, if you try to set ipv6.token, when you save it says

Error: connection verification failed: ipv6.token: only makes sense with
EUI64 address generation mode

This is the same as under 22.04. However under 22.04 the solution is
setipv6.addr-gen-mode eui64 along with the token. In 24.04 when you save
you get

Error: Failed to save 'netplan-enp3s0'
(6effa1b1-280b-3785-9b52-c723b445fb3e) connection: failed to update
connection: netplan: YAML translation failed: Error in network
definition: enp3s0: ipv6-address-generation and ipv6-address-token are
mutually exclusive

There doesn't seem to be any combination involving the token that works.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2056205] [NEW] Noble: Nautilus does't show available resources in network

2024-03-05 Thread Walter Ribeiro
Public bug reported:

I have 3 Ubuntu machines on my home network. Two of them with 22.04 and this
one with Noble.
On both computers with 22.04, Nautilus shows network shared folders, which I
can access, read and write, according to the permission settings. But in Noble,
network shared folders are not shown.
I try to access using "Connect to server" in the bottom panel, when I type
"smb:" the text turns red and it doesn't work either.

Package: nautilus 1:46~beta-0ubuntu3

An ubuntu GUI crash report window appears, saying that the process
  /usr/libexec/tracker-extract-3 is what crashed.

Attached is the entirety of the /var/log/installer directory.

This same autoinstall file used in conjunction with a 23.10.1 ISO
works perfectly fine. TPM+FDE and all.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2055176] Re: Xwayland crashed with SIGSEGV

2024-03-05 Thread alexkoon
The workaround to use X11 doesn't really work out for me as the
performance is really poor on X11 (screen updates slow, media playback
is poor etc).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2055176] Re: Xwayland crashed with SIGSEGV

2024-03-05 Thread alexkoon
I installed the debug symbols in the above and experienced the crash.
Ran the crash (failed but got the whoopsie id)

https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/48154af52a1ad74595dfd1a394e65ff5fc7131d588778dc4bacd36325d293f6280e12259a3c48ad31b56c7000ec68175ffe156d9c52de8bf78aaeb00eed11c0b

I have deterministically recreate the bug/crash. It occurs when quickly
switching to the VMWare Horizon client. For instance a quick alt-tab to
the client. Or the other way is to have the VMWare horizon client as the
'next' window, such that closing/killing the current window will quickly
switch to the horizon client will crash the horizon client and some
other apps (predominantly the snap of Spotify which I have running or
the deb install of Zoom).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2056197] [NEW] Desktop freezes for 30s to a 1min + Firefox crashes

2024-03-05 Thread Célian Godefroid
Public bug reported:

My desktop freezes for no obvious reason. I manage to unfreeze it by
locking the session, which responds 15/20s after lock input. After
unlocking, computer is responsive, all my apps are still here, except
for Firefox which is closed. When I open it, my tabs are back. No crash
report in Firefox is available for this bug.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2056196] [NEW] BT headset is disconnected when remotely changing from A2DP to HSP

2024-03-05 Thread Simon Chopin
Public bug reported:

Release of Ubuntu: Noble
Package Version: 5.72-0ubuntu1

My headset changed profile from A2DP to HSP as I received a phone call on my
phone (the headset can connect to multiple BT devices).
I'd expect the system to adapt to the new profile (add a new source, change the
properties of the sink to signal that it's crappy now, etc...), but instead it
completely disconnected the headset.

I'd assume this line in the logs is the reason:

mars 05 16:01:44 pug bluetoothd[2644]:

The browsers don't work at all, tabs crash immediately. Clicking
"Restore This Tab" leads to new crash of the same tab.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1996946] Re: Memory leak on every frame when reading GIF animations

Title:
Memory leak on every frame when reading GIF animations

Status in gdk-pixbuf package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
There is a big memory leak when reading GIF animations.

The issue was identified and fixed in gdk-pixbuf two (2) years ago,
but it was released in a version grater that the available in Ubuntu
  20.04.

At first glance, the leak appears only when a static image is
requested, but this function is used by pixbuf's upload functions and
calls this function internally. So the leak happens every time a GIF
  is loaded.

Here is the commit with the fix released in version 2.41:

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdk-
  pixbuf/-/commit/dd3aa9ed64a0a370c8150f98e849ffc6e73da827

A patch is attached to this message.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2051895] Re: Lenovo XT99 BT headset can't work in HFP profile

OK, will find more bt audio devices to do the test.

Lenovo XT99 BT headset can't work in HFP profile

Status in HWE Next:

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed
Status in pulseaudio source package in Jammy:
  Incomplete
Status in pulseaudio source package in Mantic:

Status in pulseaudio source package in Noble:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [Summary]
When use the ThinkPluse xt99 bluetooth head set to run the test
com.canonical.certification::bluetooth/audio_record_playback, it cannot record
the sound and playback.
It seems this device cannot switch to Hand free mode in this platform.

  [Steps to reproduce]
Connect the ThinkPluse xt99, use the Handfree mode, then try to record some
voice.

  [Expected result]
The bluetooth headset ThinkPluse xt99 can use as a MIC to input sound.

  [Actual result]
The bluetooth headset xt99 cannot work in the Handfree mode.

  [Failure rate]
  100%

  [Impact]
With the current Ubuntu 22.04 oem image, we try to connect the LENOVO
XT99 bt headset and let it work in HFP mode, we select HFP profile
from gnome sound-setting, but the microphone will not auto change to
bt microphone and the bt output could not work too. So this BT headset
could only work in A2DP mode with the current 22.04 OEM image.

And we tried ubuntu 22.04 generic image, mantic image and noble image,
none of them could make the headset work in HFP mode.

  [Fix]
Cherry-pick a pulseaudio commit from upstream.

  [Test]
Install the patched pulseaudio and reboot, connect to the LENOVO XT99
bt headset, select it to work in HFP mode, tested playback and capture,
  all worked well.

  [Where problems could occur]
This change will impact bt headset negotiation process in the pulseaudio,
so the possiblity of regression is limited to bt headset, it could make
the bt headset fail to connect, but this possibility is very low, we tested
the patch with different bt headset and bt speaker, all worked well.
