[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2046844] Re: AppArmor user namespace creation restrictions cause many applications to crash with SIGTRAP

2024-03-14 Thread Xavier Guillot
Fix released for Firrefox (Nightly) 125.
Since a few days, I can't launch Gpodder (podcast program) anymore, is it also
related to this bug or is it something different ?

Title:
  xserver for NVDIA GeForce GT710 not showing widgets but windows

Status in gnome-shell-extension-appindicator package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  On my Ububtu 22.04.4 system, NVDIA GeForce GT710, my-weather-indicator does
not show widget as they should be (move them across desktop, positioning,
showing on all desktop, etc.), but are shown as windows, impossible to move
from the position they have when shown.
  If I switch my drivers to nvdia-driver-470, surprise!: everything works as
expected, widgets are really widgets and I can see weather information on every
desktop, in the position I placed them.
  The problem is that I can't use nvdia-driver-470 because they let crash my
digital signature application, which is more important to me than weather info,
so I have to use xorg-server, but I would like it to work correctly with
widgets as well.

2024-03-14 Thread Marcos Alano
It seems odd. I know after a crash GNOME Shell starts with all the
extensions unloaded, even the ones installed with the system like Ubuntu
Dock still operates.

Could you check if that's the case with the Extension Manager or
Extensions app?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2056506] Re: ubuntu-dock 89 crashes on gnome-shell 45 with signal 6 when right clicking on the dock [clutter_actor_dispose: assertion failed: (priv->parent == NULL)]

2024-03-14 Thread Roman
You are right, sorry. I rebooted the machine because gnome got stuck,
got a "do you want to send crash info", and thought that another crash
occurred after reboot, but actually it was before reboot.

While checking logs of current boot I saw a line that I don't understand:
Mar 14 19:19:16 gnome-shell[2140]: Extension ubuntu-d...@ubuntu.com already
installed in /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/ubuntu-d...@ubuntu.com.
/usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/ubuntu-d...@ubuntu.com will not be loaded

Is it expected? The same is written about all other system plugins.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2057964] [NEW] xserver for NVDIA GeForce GT710 not showing widgets but windows

2024-03-14 Thread IngPaolo
Public bug reported:

On my Ububtu 22.04.4 system, NVDIA GeForce GT710, my-weather-indicator does not
show widget as they should be (move them across desktop, positioning, showing
on all desktop, etc.), but are shown as windows, impossible to move from the
position they have when shown.

** Affects: xorg-server (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2057957] [NEW] Headphone and speaker

2024-03-14 Thread Leandro
Public bug reported:

Hello, when connecting a headset to the PC, the sound comes out at the same
time from the PC speaker and the headset.
And the volume bar only appears to have an effect on the headphone jack. The
sound coming out of the speaker remains the same volume.

I tested it on the desktop, just turning down the volume, with the game
Need for speed most wanted 2012, proton, on Steam (.deb)

Steps to reproduce
1 - Connect the headphones to the Laptop while it is still turned off
2 - After connecting, carry out sound tests
3 - the sound comes out of both headphones and speaker

Thank you in advance, good luck to you always 

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2017447] Re: chromium installs cupsd snap

2024-03-14 Thread Birgit Edel
Reproducible, plausibly dangerous, and not mentioned in the "install"
section of the man page.

Sure, if one knows that canonical-published snaps can trigger
installation of 3rd-party-published snaps despite specifically disabling
the system-wide "APT::Install-Recommends" setting, one can act
accordingly.

But how would users even learn that snap, when solely instructed to
install a non-privileged browser, also decides to enable a privileged
network daemon? One that certainly has a high risk of exposing
additional RCE bugs, the threat level of which in the snap scenario is
however not obvious from documentation like
https://ubuntu.com/security/cves?q==cups

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1828107] Re: gvfs can't list shares from smb servers that disabled SMB1

2024-03-14 Thread BloodyIron
I am still having this issue every time I reboot, on Ubuntu Desktop
v23.10.

The "gvfs" package installed is version "1.52.0-1".

This issue is 100% reproducible, and my work-around still demonstrates
that the package itself (gvfs) has the capabilities of solving this
itself. Instead of failing, producing a not-helpful error, it should
simply re-init the relevant components that re-init when I do the
"killall gvfsd-smb-browse" after trying to browser the SMB Server. While
I have not looked at the code, I know programming well-enough that a
basic re-init in this scenario should be a trivial amount of code to
write, as a basic work-around until a proper solution is identified.

Either way, is this even going anywhere? Are any Devs reading this at
all? (Canonical or otherwise)

This issue is coming up to 5 years old, and frankly the UX here is
unacceptable, potentially even threatening the usability in professional
settings. Can we please get a proper solution here? Or at minimum, a
built-in stop-gap solution as I have roughly described?

Bug description:
  After bug #1778322 is fixed (just needs a gvfs rebuild with newer
  samba), samba machines will start to show up again in the "windows
  network" tab in nautilus. But if a server has disabled the SMB1
  protocol, nautilus will show an error when that server is clicked on,
  instead of showing the shares list.

  Even with SMB1 disabled, it should still be technically possible to
  get a share list, since smbclient can do it:

(In reply to shamshuddin from comment #32)

> i would like to retriver password

Sorry. Those are strongly-encrypted files. If you don't know or have
forgotten the password, you will have to look for password-cracking
software that *might* be able to discover a password that works. This
is not something that Apache OpenOffice provides, not even for files
that are saved with Password by Apache OpenOffice.

We do not have any recommendations for products that might work.

Also, the difficulty of recovering passwords is a feature. Furthermore,
encrypted .docx and .xslx files are not OOXML files. They are something
else, but Microsoft Office recognizes them as files that decrypt to
unencrypted .docx and .xslx.

Bug description:
  openjdk-8 402 fails to install in focal, jammy, mantic on i386 due to
  dependency on java-atk-bridge.

  This dependency was introduced by dropping condition present in 392:

  ifeq ($(DEB_HOST_ARCH),i386)
    ifeq (,$(filter $(distrel),precise trusty xenial bionic))
  with_bridge =

  endif
    endif
  --

  Note:
   java-atk-wrapper is present in noble on i386

  This is a regression introduced in 8u402-ga-2:

    * Restore M-A installability of focal/i386 package (LP#1916327)
  by adding xenial, bionic, focal, jammy to the list of releases
  built with the ATK bridge, but not enabling it by default;
  keep jessie on, stretch and sid and mantic/noble off the list:
  please report bugs for issues with the bridge, so sthibault
  can find, debug, fix them

  See LP: #1916327

  The alternative is to publish atk-wrapper for i386 in mantic, jammy
  and focal.

  Options:
   a) rollback the fix in Ubuntu
   b) publish atk-wrapper

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  On systems equipped with reduced blanking panel, mirror mode can result to no
image on external monitor.
  The reason is due to current fallback modes don't have pixelclock for reduced
blanking, so inadequate refresh rate is used to mode set, and result with
atomic commit failure.

  [Fix]
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/3449
  Add reduced blanking (RB) to fallback modes, so mutter can use RB mode to
meet pixelclock requirement in order to pick the right refresh rate.

  [Test]
  Connect an external monitor to affected system. Use the monitor hotkey to
switch to mirror mode or use GNOME control center to choose mirror mode. With
the patch included, the issue is no longer observed.

  [Where problems could occur]
  The modelines of reduced blanking have reversed Hsync and Vsync flags, so if
the driver doesn't handle those flags correctly, the atomic modeset/commit may
fail.

  I haven't observe any issue on Intel/AMD/Nvidia GPU so far.

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

  When using software rendering on Xorg (so usually just in VMs), some
  parts of app windows may fail to redraw.

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/2880

  [ Test Plan ]

  1. Set up a virtual machine without graphics acceleration.
  2. Log into 'Ubuntu on Xorg'.
  3. Open Settings > About and verify Graphics = llvmpipe (or "Software
Rendering"), and Windowing System = X11.
  4. sudo snap install chromium
  5. Open Chromium and find a web page with lots of text. Plain text without
any links and staying at the top of the page will work best because you don't
want to trigger any scrolling.
  6. Start selecting text with the mouse and while holding the button move the
mouse up and down rapidly. Avoid triggering any page scrolling.
  7. Release the mouse button in roughly the middle of the area of text that
was selected.
  8. Verify the remaining text selection is contiguous and not broken into
multiple disconnected text selections (the bug).
  9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 several times to be sure.

  [ Where problems could occur ]

  The fix adds a new synchronization point between the compositor and X
  server. This should be inconsequential, although there is a "sync
  ring" in mutter used for this, and if a mistake occurs there then
  other parts of the desktop could appear to stop responding in Xorg
  sessions.

  [ Other Info ]

  This is a regression that started in 3.37.3 due to
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/commit/551101c65cda.

Title:
  There is a heap buffer overflow in texlive-bin

Status in texlive-bin package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Hello,
I found a heap-buffer overflow in function ttfLoadHDMX; ttfdump can install
by apt-get texlive-binaries. I compile lastest texlive-source by clone
https://github.com/TeX-Live/texlive-source/ on unbuntu for debugging.
The overflow content and size are controlled by input. Exploiting this
issue can achive any code excuted

The steps for reproducing the vul on unbuntu:
(1) sudo apt-get iunstall texlive-binaries
(2) ttfdump -i poc.ttf

  The poc.ttf can view the attachment .ttfdump aborted and prompt "malloc():
corrupted top size" due memory corrupt.

The issue exist in function ttfLoadHDMX :

  /***function ttfLoadHDMX begin   ***/

  static void ttfLoadHDMX (FILE *fp,HDMXPtr hdmx,ULONG offset)
  {
  int i;

  xfseek(fp, offset, SEEK_SET, "ttfLoadHDMX");

  hdmx->version = ttfGetUSHORT(fp);
  hdmx->numDevices = ttfGetUSHORT(fp);
  hdmx->size = ttfGetLONG(fp);

  hdmx->Records = XCALLOC (hdmx->numDevices, DeviceRecord);

  for (i=0;inumDevices;i++)
{
hdmx->Records[i].PixelSize = ttfGetBYTE(fp);
hdmx->Records[i].MaxWidth = ttfGetBYTE(fp);
hdmx->Records[i].Width = XCALLOC (hdmx->size, BYTE);  (1)
fread ((hdmx->Records+i)->Width, sizeof(BYTE),
hdmx->numGlyphs+1,fp); (2)
}
  }

  /***function ttfLoadHDMX end   ***/

At above code (1) ,allocte heap buffer for Width according to the parsed
hdmx width. And at above code (2) , copy Width content from file and copy size
decided by controlled hdmx->numGlyphs. In the poc , hdmx->size eaqual to 1216
and hdmx->numGlyphs+1 is 4155,which get heap buffer overflow.

  /*** debug info ***/
  (gdb) p hdmx->numGlyphs+1
  $23 = 4155
  (gdb) p hdmx->size
  $24 = 1216
  /*** debug info end ***/

2024-03-14 Thread Max Lee
verify fixed with mutter 42.9-0ubuntu7 in jammy-proposed.
SEV16_DVT1_C4 202309-32111

1. enable proposed
2. sudo apt update
3. sudo apt dist-upgrade
4. sudo reboot -i
5. sudo dpkg -l | grep mutter (make sure all mutter related were ugpraded to
42.9ubuntu7)
6. Connect external monitor to the affected system
7. Switch display modes to mirror mode
8. Observe the mirror mode can be set successfully. So the issue is resolved.

Title:
  Mutter (sometimes) fails to build with [fatal error: meta/meta-enum-
  types.h: No such file or directory]

Status in mutter package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in mutter source package in Jammy:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

  Mutter failed to build, only once, on jammy amd64:

  In file included from ../src/backends/meta-backend-private.h:39,
   from ../src/backends/x11/meta-backend-x11.h:31,
   from ../src/backends/x11/nested/meta-backend-x11-nested.h:25,
   from ../src/tests/meta-backend-test.h:23,
   from ../src/tests/meta-backend-test.c:22:
  ../src/backends/meta-monitor-manager-private.h:41:10: fatal error:
meta/meta-enum-types.h: No such file or directory
     41 | #include "meta/meta-enum-types.h"
    | ^~~~
  compilation terminated.

  Seems like an old issue that you can hit at random in highly parallel
  builds. Because meta-enum-types.h is auto-generated its consumers need
  to declare stronger dependencies.

  [ Test Plan ]

  Build mutter.

  [ Where problems could occur ]

  More build failures or accidentally depending on meson features that
  don't exist in jammy.
