[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2058327] Re: Starting up Files app in external monitor freeze the entire monitor

2024-03-20 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. This is starting to look familiar since the app window has:

  Width: 7680
  Height: 4320

and gnome-shell has:

  Mar 20 12:51:12 khteh-p17-2i gnome-shell[4276]: Enabling experimental
feature 'x11-randr-fractional-scaling'

So I think you might be hitting a similar issue to bug 2004533 and
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/issues/3050, although I don't see
the same error message in your log. That may be because Nautilus is now
using GTK4 in more recent Ubuntu releases and those other bugs were from
when GTK3 was more widely used.

To test this theory, please temporarily try:

 * using scale 100% on all monitors; and/or
 * disabling fractional scaling

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2058604] [NEW] Framework 16 disable touchpad when typing doesn't work

2024-03-20 Thread Mario Limonciello
Public bug reported:

Due to the "input deck" the Framework 16 has a "USB" internal keyboard.
This throws off heuristics for detection of keyboards to turn off when
you select disable touchpad when typing.

This is fixed in upstream libinput with the following change:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libinput/libinput/-/commit/566857bd98131009699c9ab6efc7af37afd43fd0

As that's not yet part of a release yet and it's a trivial change, could
it be cherry picked for Ubuntu to give a better experience to Framework
16 users?

Title:
media button to disable touchpad not working

Status in GNOME Settings Daemon:
  Fix Released
Status in gnome-settings-daemon package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
I have an ASUS UX305CA laptop and after upgrading to 18.04 I am no
longer able to disable the touchpad by hitting Fn+F9 . When I hit
Fn+F9 it shows the graphic indicating that it's disabling the
touchpad, but the touchpad continues to work. I tried using a LiveUSB
copy of 18.04 and it the button works fine, so there seems to be
something related to upgrading. I upgrading from 16.04 where it
  worked fine before.

I'm not sure which package to file this bug against, sorry.

  Here are some details:

  $ lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS
  Release: 18.04
  $ lsmod | grep asus
  asus_nb_wmi28672 0
  asus_wmi 28672 1 asus_nb_wmi
  sparse_keymap 16384 1 asus_wmi
  wmi24576 1 asus_wmi
  video 45056 2 asus_wmi,i915
  asus_wireless 16384 0
  $ dconf read /org/gnome/desktop/peripherals/touchpad/send-events
  'enabled'

I also went through a diff between gsettings on the LiveUSB and my current
install and nothing stood out to me as being related. I do have
`org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-im-module 'ibus'` which differs from LiveUSB
which is set to 'gtk-im-context-simple', but I don't know if it's related.

Earlier I could add outlook.com to gnome calendar with exchange in

changed something and it does not authenticate anymore..

It's not very long to the release date for 24.04 LTS, and I hope this
  is fixed before that..

In evolution it does ask for outlook.com password and I use the right
password, nothing happens, other than it just asking for password
again.. edit: I got a error message now (see screenshot in comment #1)

edit 10.3.24: upgraded to Ubuntu 23.10 and it still does not work

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2018539] Re: File selector extremely slow

Title:
  File selector extremely slow

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When you try to upload/download a file in an application (e.g.
Firefox, Signal, etc) the file selector that opens is extremely slow
to appear, search and change directory.

Often times, if I try to search for a file in it, I have to wait 10 or
more second before the letters I typed appear, and most of the time
the last letter I pressed when typing, will appear before the rest of
what I wrote, meaning I have to wait for my query to be deleted before
  I re-type it again.

This has only just started since upgrading to Ubuntu 23.04. I noticed
that Nautilus has been faster in general since the update, but in the
file selector specifically, it's become unusable.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2058514] [NEW] System crashes/freezes when suspending

2024-03-20 Thread Liudvikas Akelis
Public bug reported:

Sometimes (I'd say 20% of the time) either a manual or automatic suspend
fails in these ways:

* power button remains lit (on succesful suspend it flashes)
* Fans may remain spinning and (indirectly observed) battery drains quite fast
* Screen black, impossible to wake, only to shut down by long power button press

Bug occurs BOTH on Wayland and Xorg Gnome, so not sure which package is
at fault.

In addition, bug submission documentation is not very good, I'm filing this bug

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2058513] [NEW] Screen sharing works once, then not again until restart

2024-03-20 Thread Dan Towle
Public bug reported:

I have 3 22.04 machines. Only one of them can I share the screen with
reliably. The other 2 work the first time I try to connect (from Ubuntu
20.04 machine, or 22.04 machine) but a second try just says 'server
ended vnc session'. No offer to enter a password appears.

The problem is the same when using vnc or rdp protocol.

I found many other people with this problem online, and tried their
solutions with very limited success. After disabling Wayland in the conf
file, that seemed to be a fix, but only for an hour or so. Now I can't
connect.

I will have to move these 2 machines back to 20.04 until a solution is
found.

Bug description:
I am requesting a blanket UI Freeze exception for all flavor wallpaper
packages in advance of the upcoming UI Freeze for a period of 5 days
after it starts. The Noble wallpapers for vanilla Ubuntu will be
available on March 18th, which only gives flavors 2 days to create
  their customized wallpapers.

This is a very tight deadline, and we'd like to avoid putting the
burden on flavors to request individual UIFe's or forcing them to rush
update their wallpaper to make the deadline.

I'd appreciate your support on granting this exception.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2044420] Re: gtkpod segfaults when attempting to display songs

2024-03-20 Thread Jeremy Bícha
Please update the bug description to use the SRU Template in order for
this to be sponsored for Ubuntu 23.10.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#SRU_Bug_Template

Does this fix require a fix for glib in Ubuntu 23.10 first?

I am setting this bug to Incomplete and unsubscribing ubuntu-sponsors.
Please set it back to New and resubscribe ubuntu-sponsors when these
items have been dealt with.

** Changed in: gtkpod (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Won't Fix

** Changed in: gtkpod (Ubuntu Mantic)
   Status: New => Incomplete

** No longer affects: glib2.0 (Ubuntu Noble)

Status in Ubuntu on IBM z Systems:

Status in libblockdev package in Ubuntu:

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:

Status in udisks2 package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
While installing mantic beta (on s390x, LPAR and z/VM - but this might not be
architecture specific) I faced issues with udev.
In my installation I've updated the installer to "edge/lp-2009141" (subiquity
 22.02.2+git1762.1b1ee6f4 5164).

During my installations I first noticed bad response times in case of
dealing with devices (like enabling new devices with chzdev). chzdev
is used during the installation, hence the installation procedure is
also affected by this. (I mainly notice this issue in case of DASD
  ECKD disk enablements.)

But even after after a successful (but due to this issue less snappier)
installation, means after the post-install reboot, in the installed system I
can find several udev related processes, like:
69448 root 20 0 31280 11944 2560 S 39.2 0.0 2:51.67
(udev-worker)
  509 root 20 0 31276 13812 4600 S 20.6 0.0 2:07.76
systemd-udevd
  893 root 20 0 469016 13544 10496 R 17.3 0.0 1:43.53
udisksd
1 root 20 0 168664 12748 8396 S 16.3 0.0 1:40.47
systemd
which is not only unusual, but (as one can see) they consume quite some
resources.
Even the remote ssh into that system is impacted by this high load.

So far I only see this in mantic.
I tried 20.04.3 as well as lunar, but both do not seem to be affected by this
udev problem.
I neither face the bad response on device enablement, nor can see any udev
related processes still running after post-install-reboot in the installed
system.

(Sometimes I could also see a growing log file 'syslog').

I cannot say yet what is causing this, but since I see 'systemd-udevd'
as prominent process in top, I'll first of all mark this as affecting
  systemd-udevd (or systemd).

I've attached the outcome of some more investigations I did ...

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2058136] Re: Sync udisks2 2.10.1-6 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

2024-03-20 Thread Jeremy Bícha
Actually, we believe LP: #2037569 was fixed in libblockdev 3.1.0 instead
(which is already in Noble) so we can drop the udisks2 patch. I have
synced this for you. Thank you for working on this merge.

Sync udisks2 2.10.1-6 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

Status in udisks2 package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Please sync udisks2 2.10.1-6 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
* Don't build with -Wl,-Bsymbolic-functions. It breaks module loading, as
it confuses GObject's type loading cache: "cannot register existing type
'UDisksDaemon'". (Patch also applied to Debian packaging git, can be
  synced next time). (LP: #2040488)
* Fix an event loop that can occur when ID_PART_TABLE_TYPE is not set for a
device and that device has partitions. (LP: #2037569)
* Fix an event loop that can occur when ID_PART_TABLE_TYPE is not set for a
device and that device has partitions. (LP: #2037569)

  The existing ubuntu noble-proposed FTBFS

The -Wl, -Bsymbolic-functions is part of debian as per the -6
  changelog entry

I did a grab-merge of udisks then built with both the debian
  tests-Fix-targetcli_config.json.patch and the ubuntu
lp-2037569-skip-bd_part_get_disk_spec.patch - using sbuild this successfully
  builds in noble-proposed.

Can I suggest ubuntu adds the debian delta as well as the ubuntu delta patch
as part of this sync & merge

Changelog entries since current noble version 2.10.1-1ubuntu3:

  udisks2 (2.10.1-6) unstable; urgency=medium

[ Martin Pitt ]
* Don't build with -Wl,-Bsymbolic-functions.
It breaks module loading, as it confuses GObject's type loading cache:
  "cannot register existing type 'UDisksDaemon'".
Ubuntu enables this linker flag by default, no-op for Debian.
  (LP: #2040488)

[ Michael Biebl ]
* Drop python3-distutils Depends from debian/tests/control.
No longer needed since 2.10.0. (Closes: #1065991)

2024-03-20 Thread Jeremy Bícha
In the future, could you change the title to "Merge" instead of "Sync".
Sync has a specific meaning and it is confusing to sponsors to use that
word. Although it is possible to sync first and then apply an Ubuntu
diff as a separate upload, it is more common to just do a single upload.

I am uploading this for you and am unsubscribing ubuntu-sponsors. Please
feel free to resubscribe if you have anything else that needs to be
sponsored.

Bug description:
  Feature Freeze Exception Request
  --
There are only 2 packages in Ubuntu main that use freerdp2: remmina and
gnome-remote-desktop. It is requested to switch both to freerdp3. Therefore
only one version of freerdp will be in main. freerdp2 will be demoted to
universe since many universe packages use it and are not prepared to switch to
freerdp3.

This also requests updating gnome-control-center to fully enable the
  features of gnome-remote-desktop 46.

  Impact
  --
A headline feature of GNOME 46 is support as a Remote Desktop server without
requiring someone to already be logged in locally ("headless" mode). This
feature requires gnome-remote-desktop 46. gnome-remote-desktop 46 requires
freerdp3.

Impact if this does not happen
  --
  - We would need to patch gnome-control-center to use the older Remote Desktop
panel (or at least hide the new tab for Remote Login)
  - We would need to keep using gnome-remote-desktop 45 instead of 46. The
gnome-remote-desktop upstream maintainers would be unhappy with this decision.
gnome-remote-desktop 45 was tested against Mutter 45. Changes in Mutter 46 may
require changes in gnome-remote-desktop for things to work well although a
simple test showed that basic remote desktop seems to work ok with the
mismatch. (See comment #1 from upstream developer.)

Why this did not land sooner
  ---
It required the packaging of a new source package freerdp3. And we had to do
this sooner than Debian. Sorry too many things to do before Feature Freeze and
this did not make it.

  Affected Packages
  -
  - gnome-remote-desktop 45 -> 46
  - gnome-control-center (to update the Remote Desktop settings page)
  - remmina 1.4.34 -> 1.4.35 and swap build-depends. Remmina 1.4.34 did not
work with freerdp 3.3 in my testing
  - gnome-connections (build-dependency swap): Not required by other changes
and not in Main but makes sense to switch it also

  Affected Flavors

Only Ubuntu Desktop and Edubuntu ships gdm3, gnome-control-center,
gnome-remote-desktop. (Cinnamon 23.04 and daily 23.10 also ships
gnome-control-center but this appears to be a bug since they ship
cinnamon-control-center and is likely already fixed in noble-proposed)

Remmina is included in Ubuntu Desktop, Cinnamon, Kylin, and Unity.

gnome-connections has no reverse dependencies or recommends.

gnome-control-center 46~beta was already in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS before Feature
Freeze. It will be updated to 46.0. The relevant part here is whether we use
the 46~beta version of the Remote Desktop page or the 46.0 version.

  Build Logs
  --
I have backported GNOME Shell 46 RC and GTK4 4.13 to the Ubuntu Desktop PPA.
The PPA currently has noble-proposed disabled so that it is easily possible to
try this set of packages without dealing with the incomplete 32-bit time
transition in noble-proposed. In addition, the PPA has the affected packages
from this FFe.

  https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-desktop/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+packages

  Testing Done
  ---
  1. From Ubuntu 23.10 client using Remmina, I was successfully able to connect
to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS host using GNOME Shell 46 RC and GNOME Remote Desktop 46
RC. Remote control worked.

  2. From Ubuntu 24.04 LTS client with Remmina 1.4.35 built with
freerdp3, I was able to connect to Ubuntu 23.10 host. Remote control
  worked.

  3. From Ubuntu 24.04 LTS client with GNOME Connections 46 RC built
with freerdp3, I was able to connect to Ubuntu 23.10 host. Remote
  control worked.

  4. I added a new Remote Login test case to
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/TestPlans/RemoteDesktop and
verified that remote login worked. Notably, enabling this changes the
port for the older service, now called "Desktop Sharing" to 3390.
Since 3389 is the default port, users would then need to manually
specific port 3390 for Desktop Sharing in their remote connection app
  (Remmina, GNOME Connections, etc.).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2054163] Re: Figure out packaging repo details

2024-03-20 Thread Jeremy Bícha
I overhauled the Ubuntu package to use the Debian orig tarballs since we
need to be able to update our vendoring at any time.

Therefore, the pristine-tar and debian/* branches are stored at
https://salsa.debian.org/gnome-team/snapshot

But the ubuntu/* branches are stored at
https://salsa.debian.org/ubuntu-dev-team/snapshot

There is also
https://salsa.debian.org/ubuntu-dev-team/snapshot/-/blob/ubuntu/latest/debian/README.source

The ubuntu/* branches are stored separately because the vendoring takes
a very large amount of space compared to the rest of what is stored in
the git repo and we want to be polite to the Debian GNOME team.

It's possible to reconsider later but this should work for now.

** Changed in: gnome-snapshot (Ubuntu)
   Status: Triaged => Fix Released

Title:
  Figure out packaging repo details

Status in gnome-snapshot package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Ubuntu's gnome-snapshot packaging had to diverge from Debian's because
current Rust policy for Ubuntu main requires that it be vendored. This
conflicts with best practice in Debian to devendor packages.

Ubuntu changes to GNOME packages are normally pushed to a separate
branch in Salsa in the same repo as the Debian packages. This usually
adds a slight overhead to the Debian repo in exchange for a better
Ubuntu workflow and easier sharing between Debian and Ubuntu.

In this case, I think the overhead is more significant. The vendor/
directory is very large. The vendored orig tarball is currently 33
megabytes. In comparison, the devendored tarball is only 1 megabyte.

Every new upstream release would add permanently significantly
  increase the git repo size.

  Suggestions
  ===
  - A "fork" of the Salsa repo, in Salsa
Forks can have different names so we could name it something like
https://salsa.debian.org/gnome-team/snapshot-ubuntu to preserve the existing
team access.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2058454] Re: [FFe] Replace cheese by gnome-snapshot in the desktop image

2024-03-20 Thread Sebastien Bacher
closing that one which was submitted as duplicate by error

** Changed in: gnome-snapshot (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Invalid

** Summary changed:

- [FFe] Replace cheese by gnome-snapshot in the desktop image
+ Replace cheese by gnome-snapshot in the desktop image

** Description changed:

Replacing cheese by gnome-snapshot is on the desktop plans for this
- cycle but has been taking longer than expected (rust packaging
- complication + MIR delays). We got a +1 MIR review on the MIR bug
- #2052652 now and security team said they should have their review also
- done by the end of the week.
-
- The rational for the change is that cheese has been in low maintenance
- mode for years and is quite buggy. GNOME switched their default camera
- application in GNOME 45 (a cycle ago).
-
- It's also an oem team request since 22.04 to 'fix or replace" cheese
- since it has flaws which are problematic for hardware enablement. The
- fact that there was no action on fixing those problems since 22.04 is
- confirming that the project isn't really active anymore.
-
- gnome-shapshot is also using the current gtk4 version (which will make
- it more consistent with the other desktop applications, cheese is still
- using gtk3) and libcamera which is making it compatible with newer
- mipi/ipu6 cameras.
-
- The regression potential is limited since that's a standalone
- application mostly used to test the camera and do selfies and video
- recordings.

gnome-shapshot is also using the current gtk4 version (which will make
it more consistent with the other desktop applications, cheese is
still using gtk3) and libcamera which is making it compatible with
  newer mipi/ipu6 cameras.

The regression potential is limited since that's a standalone
application mostly used to test the camera and do selfies and video
  recordings.

2024-03-20 Thread Daniel van Vugt
If there's only meant to be one maximized window then we can't tell the
difference between a frozen screen and a frozen window. Please check to
see if the same bug occurs with other apps (and try them maximized too).

2024-03-20 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Without knowing the monitor layout (xrandr) I don't know what I'm seeing
in that screenshot. Are you saying that other apps also fail to render
on the external monitor after the bug has started? And do you mean
"maximized" instead of "minimized"?

Title:
FP fingerprints are not deleted when user is removed

Status in gnome-control-center package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  FP: Fingerprint
“FP templates were not deleted when user is removed”
•From admin user account, create a new user account (user1) and login to it
using password. Enroll 2 FP in it.
•Lock the user account and login using enrolled FP. Observe that login is
successful.
•Now login to admin user and delete the newly created account (user1). Select
"Delete files" option while removing the account.
•Create a new user again (user 1). Observe that FP authentication with
previously enrolled FPs still work at login screen.
Attached the snapshot of user delete option chosen from GUI.
