[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1977782] Re: Unable to open any file:/// URL

2022-06-07 Thread David Kastrup
Ok, "any file" was wrong. The problem appears to be "any file in the
/tmp hierarchy". That is a common destination for downloading and
unpacking stuff, including by software that displays HTML by reverting
to the system browser.

The error message then is

File not found

Firefox can’t find the file at /tmp/test-results/index.html.

Check the file name for capitalization or other typing errors.
Check to see if the file was moved, renamed or deleted.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1722824] [NEW] Xorg crashed with SIGABRT

2017-10-11 Thread David Kastrup
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1557346 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1557346

Public bug reported:

Happened after an upgrade. First the desktop became unresponsive (Emacs
window stopped accepting input even while appearing to have focus
according to cursor shape, Alt-Tab did nothing, nor did clicking on any
desktop icons). Console switching still worked. SIGTERM failed to
impress panel and desktop, so turned to SIGKILL. No change on the
desktop (still a working mouse cursor but no reaction to keys or clicks)
when console-switching back. Finally, switching back stopped working
also, displaying just a blinking text cursor on a blank screen, then
this abort.

2017-09-06 Thread David Kastrup
So I _purged_ the already removed libxvmc1:i386 (no idea how it actually
got installed though) and then libxvmc1 (:amd64) updated/installed fine.
Very peculiar.

When running ffado-test Discover (admittedly after there already were
problems with the Firewire connection) I got the following console
output:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1703176] Re: jackd assert failure: jackd: rawmidi.c:268: snd_rawmidi_open_conf: Assertion `err >= 0' failed.

2017-07-09 Thread David Kastrup
I think that the problem is likely in

/usr/include/sound/asound.h:625

struct snd_rawmidi_params {
int stream;
size_t buffer_size; /* queue size in bytes */
size_t avail_min;   /* minimum avail bytes for wakeup */
unsigned int no_active_sensing: 1; /* do not send active sensing byte
in close() */
unsigned char reserved[16]; /* reserved for future use */
};

struct snd_rawmidi_status {
int stream;
struct timespec tstamp; /* Timestamp */
size_t avail;   /* available bytes */
size_t xruns; /* count of overruns since last status
(in bytes) */
unsigned char reserved[16]; /* reserved for future use */
};

Here are 4 uses of size_t which will result in different structures for
32-bit and 64-bit compilations even though 32-bit binaries can
communicate with a 64-bit kernel via ioctl.

So this would appear to require fixing in the ALSA headers of the kernel
and recompiling alsa-lib with the changed headers.

I think using unsigned rather than size_t should work fine in this
regard. However, there are also structures using snd_pcm_uframes_t
which is typedeffed to unsigned long and thus should also be
architecture-dependent.

It's not clear to me why or how the respective ioctl calls would work
for PCM here when running with a 32-bit alsalib/executable and a 64-bit
kernel.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1665979] Re: jack_server_control crashed with SIGSEGV in __strncmp_ia32()

2017-03-02 Thread David Kastrup
This is an upstream bug. I read in a source repository (mirror?)
https://github.com/jackaudio/example-clients/blob/master/server_control.c#L151-L154

struct option long_options[] = {
{"driver", 1, 0, 'd'},
{"client", 1, 0, 'c'},
};

This is missing a final entry {0, 0, 0, 0} to end the array. Does
anybody have an idea who to contact?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1460062] Re: Scrollback with Shift-PageUp Shift-PageDown does not refresh screen

2015-10-22 Thread David Kastrup
I'm pretty sure by now that this issue has been video-driver or
compositor related. After upgrading to Wily and a different NVidea
driver, it seems to have disappeared. Prior to that, I noticed lag for
several other operations, like scolling in browser windows, with the
result being unconsistent until one moved around enough with the mouse
or did other operations that might fill some small pipeline to the point
of flushing.

So I'm pretty sure that this bug is not actually GNOME terminal related.
It may just be that GNOME terminal got more economical with its
redrawing/refresh and thus made it more likely to leave the uncompletely
flushing rendering pipeline in a state where the visual feedback was
not-yet-helpful.

Sorry for the noise.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1460062] Re: Scrollback with Shift-PageUp Shift-PageDown does not refresh screen

2015-06-03 Thread David Kastrup
Egmont Koblinger egm...@gmail.com writes:

 Let's start with the simplest one: no highlighting, just
 Shift+Page{Up,Down}. How does the bug occur exactly? How can I reproduce
 it? (I'm using these keys all the time and never had a problem, except
 for https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=160127).

Basically, when using Shift+Page{Up,Down}, the display tends to lack one
keypress behind. So if you change direction, it appears as if the first
move is in the wrong direction.

It may well be relevant that I am using Cinnamon as my desktop. Maybe
it is less generous with expose or other events.

It also helps if there is no other action on the screen (no other
window). My terminal window is always vertically maximized and there
are several terminal tabs in it. It's not perfectly reproducible, but
doing S-PageUp and S-PageDown several times in a row is rather likely to
trigger it. Sometimes the cursor blinking causes a refresh, so it's
also more likely with the cursor off-screen.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1220653] [NEW] mpost binary is broken

2013-09-04 Thread David Kastrup
Public bug reported:

The Metapost binary distributed on the TeXlive2013 CDROM is broken; an
upgrade using tlmgr will fix it.

The brokenness exhibits itself in both i386 as well as amd64 binaries:
one result is that the fonts generated when building LilyPond are
broken, showing (among other important broken glyphs) a severely ugly
treble clef.

This has been reported on URL:https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html
/lilypond-devel/2013-09/msg0.html as well as
URL:http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-
lilypond/2013-09/msg00011.html (the report starts for current Fedora
which is also afflicted but the discussion evolves around the TeXlive
source of the problem).

I have checked that the Debian packages for either wheezy or sid are clean (at
least for i386): those packages would be
/home/dak/Downloads/texlive-binaries_2012.20120628-4_i386.deb
/home/dak/Downloads/texlive-binaries_2013.20130729.30972-1_i386.deb

In contrast, the current Saucy package is broken. It is
/var/cache/apt/archives/texlive-binaries_2013.20130529.30792-1build2_i386.deb

It would seem that upgrading to current sid would likely do the trick
though it is unclear exactly what caused the problem (apparently it was
presumed to have been fixed in TeXlive by recompiling with a version of
GCC newer than 4.5.4, but that would not seem to match the circumstances
under which the problem appears here).

** Affects: texlive-bin (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1220653] Re: mpost binary is broken

2013-09-04 Thread David Kastrup
The Debian unstable changelog lists as additional changes over the Saucy
version (among others):

texlive-bin (2013.20130722.31261-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * allow for different origin in make-orig-tar
  * Imported Upstream version 2013.20130722.31261
- fix for crash of luatex on x32 archs in certain cases
- update metapost to 1.803
  * ship new pmpost patch for 1.803
  * bump standards version, no changes necessary

 -- Norbert Preining prein...@debian.org  Fri, 26 Jul 2013 14:39:43
+0900

This would appear to be the relevant change regarding Metapost.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1184386] Re: Crash with __fortify_fail ***buffer overflow detected***

2013-08-01 Thread David Kastrup
upstream claims works for me, but the respective mails don't indicate
that they actually ran ps2pdf (rather than just gs) on the supplied test
files. Even if they did, it would appear that the core dump is seen due
by Ubuntu specific stack protection options.

That makes it likely that upstream has the problem as well but does not
see a core dump for it.

The recent ghostscript 9.07 security update in Raring Ringtail did not
fix this problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1184386] Re: Crash with __fortify_fail ***buffer overflow detected***

2013-05-28 Thread David Kastrup
Here is a much smaller file triggering the core dump. Run ps2pdf on it.
My guess is that it tries to print an error message but the formatting
of the error message is done to insufficient or unallocated memory.

** Attachment added: Minimal file crashing ps2pdf

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1184386] Re: Crash with __fortify_fail ***buffer overflow detected***

2013-05-27 Thread David Kastrup
Downgrading to ghostscript 9.06 (last version from Quantal) along with
dependencies and putting it on hold did the trick for me:
hi  ghostscript9.06~dfsg-0ubuntu4 i386
ii  ghostscript-x  9.06~dfsg-0ubuntu4 i386
ii  libgs9 9.06~dfsg-0ubuntu4 i386
ii  libgs9-common  9.06~dfsg-0ubuntu4 all

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1184386] Re: Crash with __fortify_fail ***buffer overflow detected***

2013-05-27 Thread David Kastrup
An independent tester has corroborated that the problem occurs for a
default Raring Ringtail installation with the i386 package. Several
testers have reported that the amd64 package is not affected.
Downgrading to 9.06 solves the problem.

** Changed in: ghostscript (Ubuntu)
