[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1053570] Re: Alt+section does not work as expected

2012-09-22 Thread Eddie Dunn
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1035668 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1035668

I don't believe it's a duplicate of bug 1035628 -- I have no problem
with losing focus when using alt+tab/alt+section.

However, it IS a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/precise/+source/unity/+bug/1035668.

** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 1035628
[SRU Regression] Alt+Tab/Alt+grave brings other window to the front but
loses focus entirely.

** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 1035668

pressed twice

Title:
Alt+section does not work as expected

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Reproduce:
Open two e.g. two Firefox windows. Use alt+section (key above tab, § on my
Swedish keyboard layout, ` on US layouts) to switch between the two different
windows.

  What happens:
A graphical window switcher is shown, with an orange glow around the window
not currently focused. You release alt+section, since the orange halo leads you
to beleive the window you want to switch to is selected. This is false -- you
are instead taken back to the window you had focused when pressing alt+section.

If I hold alt and press section again, the orange glow will move to
the right _together with the window it was highlighting_. After doing
this, window selection graphics work properly. This means I have to
double tap section in order to switch windows within an application.

Also, if I type alt+section really, really fast, the switcher window
does not appear, and then the window switching works as expected.

  Expected behavior:
  1. Alt+section should highlight the window that will actually be selected.
  2. I should not need to hold alt and double tap section to change to the next
window within an application. One section key press should be enough.

2012-08-11 Thread Eddie Dunn
This is actually a very annoying bug for people with many active tabs.
It gives the exactly the wrong affordance for when you quickly wish to
discern whether you have more tabs or not in a certain direction.

Safely remove drive is not safe for SD card readers

Status in Hundred Paper Cuts:

Bug description:

  RELEASE OF UBUNTU:

Description:Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS

  VERSION OF PACKAGE:

Candidate: 1:2.30.1-0ubuntu1.1

  STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

   (1) Insert SD card
   (2) In nautilus, right click on the card and click on Safely remove drive.
   (3) Remove and then re-insert SD card.

  WHAT I EXPECTED TO HAPPEN:

SD card should be prepared for removal, but inserting it or another
SD card after that should work.

  WHAT HAPPENED INSTEAD:

SD card reader is left powered down and not on the USB bus, so new
SDcard insertions are not seen by the system at all.

  DESCRIPTION:

USB connected SD card readers and similar devices appear to the OS as
being external or removable devices. This causes Nautilus to
provide a right-click context menu item currently named Safely remove
  drive.

Using that item triggers a call to DriveDetatch() which powers down
the device and removes it from the USB bus. At this point, there is
no way to use the device again until a reboot.

Attempts to handle this at lower technical kernel/gvfs layers have
been only partially successful, in that users continue to follow
Windows-derived right-click, Safely remove UI actions and so
  accidentally disable their devices.

Since clearly, in this situation, clicking on Safely remove drive is
not at all safe (!), it would seem appropriate to rename this menu
item to something less likely to be used accidentally by novice users
who expect it to be safe.

  SUGGESTED WORDING CHANGE:

One possible wording might be Power down external device. This is
unlikely to be mentally associated with the Windows Safely remove
wording, and also makes it clear that this is intended for use with an
*external* device, so hopefully fewer users will try it on a device
that is in fact internal to their machine.

created at the suggestion of David Tombs.

Windows can be hidden on another workspace

Status in Compiz:

Status in One Hundred Papercuts:

Status in Unity:

Status in “compiz” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  What happens:
A window can be moved so that just a part of its lower edge is below the
bottom boundary of the current workspace (workspace 1). If I later swicth to
the workspace below (workspace 2), the window is registered as being on that
workspace -- even though the lower edge of the window is hidden by the top
panel of workspace 2. This means I can't activate the window by clicking its
icon in the Dash; I will have to switch back to workspace 1 before I can
interact with the window again. (see attached screenshot)

This is a minor annoyance if you are familiar with workspaces. If you,
however, accidentally switch workspace this can be really bad, since
you do not know how to go back, and the application window will just
appear to be gone even though it is still running. The only way for
such a user to get back to the application is to restart it, losing
  potential work in the process.

  Expected behavior:
Clicking the icon of a running applicaiton in the Dash should bring you to
the workspace/viewport were it occupies the biggest part of the screen. This
way, an application window cannot accidentally disappear.

2014-04-14 Thread Eddie Dunn
Not sure what more you want me to report. I've followed the guide on
http://voices.canonical.com/david.henningsson/2014/03/07/headset-jacks-
on-newer-laptops/ and I tried setting both options snd-hda-intel model
=dell-headset-multi and options snd-hda-intel model=dell-headset-dock.

You are correct that there is only a headset jack on this laptop.

Title:
Dell XPS 9333 Headset jack not correctly detected

Status in “alsa-driver” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Plug a headset of the TRRS kind into your headset jack on the laptop.
  2. Get bugged by the annoying Unknown Audio Device dialog _every single
time_.

  Expected behavior:

Ubuntu should just know that it's a headset jack. Barring this, the
dialog should remember my last choice, and stop bugging me,
  needlessly.

The codec on this computer is:

  $ grep -r Realtek /proc/asound/card*

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1299549] Re: Dell XPS 9333 Headset jack not correctly detected

2014-04-15 Thread Eddie Dunn
I have tried plugging in a headset, headphones, and a mic. All of them
work as expected, given the right selection in sound settings. Knowing
anything about correct drivers, nodes, sequence numbers and pins are
beyond my knowledge, unfortunately.

With a headset plugged in, however, there is a problem with hearing
white noise, which I think is connected with the fact that it picks up
noise from the headset mic. That is another bug, though.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1585084] Re: Volume notification keeps popping up constantly(the notifyosd bubble on top-right corner)

2016-09-18 Thread Eddie Dunn
My log.

Contrary to what the log reports, I did not plug anything into the front
headphone jack.

Title:
Volume notification keeps popping up constantly(the notifyosd bubble
  on top-right corner)

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I upgraded to Ubuntu 16.04 yesterday, I did a clean install while
preserving the home directory which is mounted in a separate
partition. Even during the installation I had constant volume
notification bubble appearing on the top-right corner of my screen, it
would come and go about twice every minute. I just thought it was due
to installing hardware drivers or something but the problem persisted
even when I booted into the freshly installed system. I did some
searching and two users reported the exact problem. And one more
suggested this happens because constant disconnect and reconnect of
the sound card which makes sense as the sound settings flashes briefly
during every popup. Someone on IRC suggested to kill pulseaudio and
thus restart it, that does not fix the issue. I also tried the Live
environment thinking it might be due to some old config files in home
partition (which was preserved during upgrade), but this problem
happens in the live environment as well, which makes sense because it
was present during installation as well.
