I had a similar problem show up on Lubuntu 16.04 (i386). One thing that
SEEMS to work (it actually made a Samsung phone reboot!) is
1) disable the "USB debugging" on the phone;
2) set the phone to Airplane mode (so it doesn't try to make a network
connection).

On Lucid Lynx (amd64), it also requires unsetting $LANGUAGE (besides
unsetting $LANG). The following works:

amd64. The IceWM toolbar never showed up; the user default $HOME/.icewm
directory was removed to be sure. Apport reported a crash with this
package (gnome-settings-daemon) as well as with icewm (see Bug #4478
As requested, I'm appending the Valgrind log. Crash ocurred while still
choosing File -> Exit on Rhythmbox's menu; I never got the chance to
actually press Exit.
