[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2013216] Re: Single click on title bar does not transfer focus to target window (server side decorations in Xorg sessions)

2023-05-04 Thread AndreK
This is an annoying bug that gives a very inconsistent experience.
Apparently affecting 21 people ... NO . this is affecting thousands of users,
it's just hard to google/find as a topic.
This deserves much higher priority.

Status in Mutter:

Status in mutter package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Single clicking the title bar of windows without a complex title bar
(namely a title bar with additional buttons besides the
close/maximinze/minimize) does not transfer focus to them.

  Reproduction recipe:

  1. Open gnome-terminal.
  2. Run xedit.
  3. Focus gnome-terminal.
  4. Click Xedit's title bar.

  Expected: Xedit has focus.
  Observed: gnome-terminal retains focus.
  .
  5. Focus Xedit.
  6. Click gnome-terminal's title bar.

Expected and observed: Xedit relinquishes focus and gnome-terminal
  gets focus.

I can reproduce this in my main, up to date Lunar system in Xorg and
also in a virtual machine with the 2023-03-24 09:02 iso
  (https://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/lunar-desktop-

Bug description:
  Example:

I use Virtualbox and mount a .vdi on an SMB server. Using gvfsd-smb
(browsing within Gnome to find the share), gvfsd-smb uses up to 50%
CPU which slows down the entire system when accessing the network
share. Mounting using sudo ($ sudo mount -t smbfs -o
guest, nounix, noperm //server/share /media/share) so that cifs is used
uses around 8% CPU. The difference is dramatic!

If I didn't have sudo access my machine would grind to a halt when

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I am cross-posting this issue, which I reported to Valve's Source GIT
issue tracker, because it was suggested that the regression may be due
to Ubuntu Xorg changes rather than changes on the Steam end.

  Link: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Source-1-Games/issues/1822

  Symptom --
DoD:Source loads normally. But after a few minutes of playing (not a specific
time as far as I can tell), the game freezes in place. A short clip (maybe a
quarter of a second) of the last audio that played then repeats over and over
on a loop. The process has to be killed manually with a QUIT or HUP signal for
good measure. This is a new issue that just arose today.

I have included system info, kernel log, and output when game is run
  from terminal and crashes.

I have the same problem with a normal session.
a manual mount like :
sudo mount -t exfat /dev/sdb1 /media/exfat /media/manual
works fine.

this goes for all Gopro3 64GB cards (exFAT formatted)

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-10-14 Thread AndreK
Update to 13.10
On 15 Oct 2013 02:15, tjboadwa tjboa...@gmail.com wrote:

I've been running Ubuntu for about 7 months now, and currently have
12.10 running on a Dell Precision M90. I am experiencing this problem
with my NAS. The files copied fine but when I try to read or copy the
other way (to my computer from the NAS) with large directories the
 Nautilus hangs.

Can someone give me step by step instructions on how to follow through
on this fix? It is not entirely clear to me how to do this. One thing
I should mention, I've only been into the command line a few times, so
I'm pretty new to the Linux world.

 Title:
nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

 Status in GVFS:
   Fix Released
Status in “gvfs” package in Ubuntu:
   Fix Released
Status in “gvfs” source package in Precise:
   In Progress
Status in “gvfs” source package in Raring:
   Fix Committed

 Bug description:
   Impact:
copies from/to samba share often end up hanging

   Test case:
   - visit a smb location in nautilus
   - copies data from/to it (some non trivial directories makes the issues
 easier to trigger)
   - the copy should complete without hanging

   Regression potentiel:
Check that nautilus is still working correctly and than you don't have
issues copying data from/to remote locations

   ---

   Problem
   ===
Copying files to and from samba shares (this includes Windows shares) is
unreliable in Ubuntu 12.10 and Ubuntu 13.04 when using nautilus' integrated
samba client (gvfs-smb): The copy randomly hangs after a few files or a few
 GB.

   Workaround
   ==
Until gvfs-smb is fixed, use the kernel samba client (cifs) that works
reliably, is faster, but needs some terminal commands to get going:
   # sudo -s
   # mkdir /mnt/cifs
   # mount -t cifs -o user=YOUR_SAMBA_USER -o uid=YOUR_LINUX_USER
 //SAMBA_SERVER/SAMBA_SHARE /mnt/cifs
It will ask for you password, you can then access the shared files at
 /mnt/cifs.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1168428] Re: Unable to select surround sound output.

2013-04-12 Thread AndreK
how to change to 6 ch ?
(I see only stereo options in pulseaudio volume control.)

Posting load according to instructions I found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio/Log
please note that ~/.pulse/client.conf werw not found, and no Ctrl-C was
needed after the last command - but I guess you got all you need in the attaced
file.

Thanks for looking into this,

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1157586] Re: Reduced File manager functionality when working with MTP device

2013-03-21 Thread AndreK
Regarding delete:
please check this out, and the comments below:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=696190

That's probably because the backend doesn't support trashing, which is the
Ctrl+Delete action (some distros might have patched that back to use Delete
instead). Shift+Delete triggers the Delete action, and my guess is that will
work too.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-03-18 Thread AndreK
hi all.
try two things: chaneg MTU from auto to 1500 or 1000
Disable jumbo frames on your switch.

Niticing that the problem happened when opening a video file, or with
massive/fast file access,
I changed MTU to 700, to see if it slowed things down and reduced the problem.
it seems so, I was even able to scan music collection - slowly, but with no
read errors.
Increased MTU to 1500 - and I still do not see problems.
Also: disabled jumbo frame support on my switch.
I *guess* that the bug is somehow sensitive to jumbo frames.

Yep, need to switch to something with decent quality control, where bugs
are being fixed. Preferably Debian based..

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-03-17 Thread AndreK
using another file manager is not a solution.
backup tools, VLV, Mplayer, will still make gvfs-smb fail. and Rhythmbox will
wtill be unable to index a collection on smb server.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-01-21 Thread AndreK
I asked a question how to get some attention to a important bug -
during an chat with one of the guys from ubuntu. ubuntu on air

he told me I needed to contact developer team - easier said, than
done, after much searching I found mail address of somewhat significant
member, team admin. Sent mail, explaining that this is very important
to many users, business users, and very, very, discouraging to anyone
that tries Ubuntu at home and have som sort of network/NAS/server.

no response - that was 1 week ago.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1077696] Re: mounted samba share stops working for file access

mounted samba share stops working for file access

Status in “gvfs” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Ubuntu 12.10 - same problem when acessing SMB shares from two computers
same for shares both on Ubuntu 12.10 server, and a windows server.

  Reproduce;
it helps if you play a video/movie using vlc or mplayer from share. the
file should be open for hours. (use pause)
  - when unpaused, the file will play fine.
-no new big files on that share will open, small files may work.
unmounting + remounting the SMB share may fixe the problem, but other
processes may be affected:
VLC - while stuck with such samba problem, is impossible to kill, same for
smplayer
  sudo killall vlc -s KILL
  .. will not kill it.
and so unmounting the share takes 10 attempts..

Status in “gvfs” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Ubuntu 12.10 - same problem when acessing SMB shares from two computers
same for shares both on Ubuntu 12.10 server, and a windows server.

  Reproduce;
it helps if you play a video/movie using vlc or mplayer from share. the
file should be open for hours. (use pause)
  - when unpaused, the file will play fine.
-no new big files on that share will open, small files may work.
unmounting + remounting the SMB share may fixe the problem, but other
processes may be affected:
VLC - while stuck with such samba problem, is impossible to kill, same for

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1025024] Re: 5.1 surround volume controls messed up, unable to get front sound up.

2012-07-17 Thread AndreK
Pulseaudio volume control, once installed, revealed that each channel -
especially front channels were at low volume. moving any of the 6 volume
sliders in Pulseaudio volume fixed the problem by setting all channels
to equal volume.

2011-10-20 Thread AndreK
Hi.
So far, I've run only one such backup with grsync on 11.10 - without problem. -
this could be random luck, or just no more bug.
-the 11.10 is clean installed, with only some application settings imported
(like .grsync settings)
I will do more testing soon, it would be nice if the problem proved to be gone.
Thank you.
