[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1818549] Re: Can't use the extensions provided by the webext-* packages

2019-06-18 Thread Andreas Schildbach
There is a separate package chromium-ublock-origin. Maybe try that one
for Chromium?

Bug description:
  chromium-browser seems to ignore the extensions installed using the
  webext-* packages, e.g.

  webext-ublock-origin
  webext-browserpass

  The extensions simply do not show up anywhere in Chromium, while they
  work fine in Firefox. These webext packages are syncs from Debian, and
  on Debian systems they correctly show up both in Firefox and Chromium
  (installed using the 'chromium' Debian package).

  I'm running an up-to-date disco, with chromium-browser
  72.0.3626.96-0ubuntu1. I didn't try with any previous version, so I
  don't know if the problem is a regression.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1814133] Re: update to openjdk 11 in 18.04 LTS

2019-04-15 Thread Andreas Schildbach
Is there any idea when this OpenJDK 11 transition will happen, and
Gradle 4.4.1 be released from bionic-proposed to bionic-updates? No need
for an exact date, but will it take more like days or weeks from now?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1814133] Re: update to openjdk 11 in 18.04 LTS

2019-03-18 Thread Andreas Schildbach
@Matthias: The current Gradle 3.4.1 doesn't requre Java 10 or 11. It
runs fine with Java 8, and the declared package dependencies also
reflects that.

For an LTS, I'm suggesting to keep the compatiblity to Java 8,
especially since upstream Gradle works fine with Java 8 (even the
current version). I did *not* suggest to revert the JDK default.

Tiago has updated bug 1820389 with more insight about the issue.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1814133] Re: update to openjdk 11 in 18.04 LTS

2019-03-16 Thread Andreas Schildbach
4) Android builds are entirely broken with OpenJDK 11.

Apparently, you'd be forced to upgrade Android Gradle plugin to at least
3.1.0 to be compatible to OpenJDK 11. Ubuntu/Debian still has version
2.2.2 [1]!

But even if you upgrade to 3.1.0 manually (bypassing apt), you'd break
reproducable builds. Versions 3.1 to 3.4 are dependent on file system
sort order. According to Google, that bug has recently been fixed in 3.5
[2] and will be backported to 3.4, but anyway these versions require
newer Gradle versions that have yet to appear in Ubuntu/Debian. So we
have a dependency deadlock that is currently unresolvable.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1768610] Re: leftover conffile forces GNOME is software rendering

2018-06-14 Thread Andreas Schildbach
I'm trying the bionic version of the proposed nux-tools
(4.0.8+18.04.20180613.5-0ubuntu1) and it works fine so far.

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

  GNOME shell and other 3D programs run using software rendering after
  unity removal.

  This SRU covers only the upgrade case or if nux-tools removal happens
  after this update, for people who already upgraded and in broken state
  another SRU will follow.

  [ Test case ]

  · Install xenial
  · Upgrade to bionic or artful
    (assuming you're using a GNOME session)
  · sudo apt remove nux-tools
  · log into your session
  . From terminal:
    - printenv LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE
    Should print nothing (and return an error)

  Same should happen if you don't remove nux-tools but you change
  `/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test` not to run properly (replace with a script
exiting 1), but you're running a GNOME session.

  · If running Unity session instead, ensure that
printenv LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE equals 1 in case that you're running
in an environment with no 3d support (VMs are easy tests)

  [ Regression Potential ]

  Unity desktops with no 3d support could not start anymore.

  ===

  After an upgrade from 17.10 to 18.04, I noticed that all gnome windows
  animations were gone. After some digging, it seems that gnome-session
  incorrectly assumes that my graphics has no acceleration, when in fact
  it does: it's a i5-2520M CPU @ 2.50GHz with Intel integrated graphics
  (i915 driver).

  I've tried this with and without the xserver-xorg-video-intel package
  (a.k.a. Intel driver) with the same behavior.

  The output of gnome-session-check-accelerated is: llvmpipe (LLVM 6.0,
  256 bits) however the system should have DRM 2.0 capability.

  GL checks (e.g. glxinfo, glxgears produce the expected output from a
  working DRM system).

  mesa-utils and mesa-utils-extra are both installed.

  I can't find a work around. Perhaps there is something wrong with my
  install/upgrade?

  Everything else works fine, although the graphical transitions are no
  longer smooth. But it would be nice to restore the expected behavior.

  I have attached the log of 'journalctl -b0'

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1773846] [NEW] Fullscreen title bars (!) waste so much space

2018-05-28 Thread Andreas Schildbach
Public bug reported:

On Xenial, I had only one title bar containing the menu to the left and
the systray to the right.

On Bionic, I've got three title bars:

1. Stripped down menu to the left, systray to the right
2. Current path (redundant, since this is usually in the prompt)
3. Full menu

I consider this a significant regression, as it now wastes precious
screen space – about three lines of terminal text compared to the last
LTS.

Also, two menu bars for the same app, partially containing the same
items appear to be useless to me.

I hope the change can be undone in the current LTS cycle.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 995332] Re: Please enhance NetworkManager such that DNSSEC validation is done whenever possible

desktop Ubuntu vivid or wily installation?

Title:
  Please enhance NetworkManager such that DNSSEC validation is done
  whenever possible

Status in dnsmasq package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Network Manager in Precise uses a local forwarding DNS server
  (dnsmasq). This does not perform DNSSEC validation, although it is
  configured to proxy the DNSSEC validation result from the upstream
  server, for which the manpage mentions the following caveat:

  "You should only do this if you trust all the configured upstream
  nameservers and the network between you and them."

  Since not all networks or upstream DNS servers are trustworthy, the
  safest place to perform DNSSEC validation is on the client. Using a
  local DNS server which cannot validate is a missed opportunity; by
  replacing dnsmasq with a more-capable DNS server (e.g. Unbound)
  security against DNS poisoning and MITM attacks could be improved.

I cannot test this, because I moved to Utopic and Vivid. Both kernels
have the same problem. I think this test is as good as the one you're
proposing and the status of this ticket can be moved back to 'new'.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1432194] Re: Graphics unstable on Ubuntu 14.04 and 14.10 using Intel HD Graphics 5500

2015-09-17 Thread Andreas Schildbach
I've got exactly this issue (missing characters, sometimes funny colored
artifacts replacing characters in fonts) on the Lenovo T410s (Ubuntu
15.04, xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.917-1~exp1ubuntu2.2). Will this
fix be ported to Vivid?

  Trying to achieve: Get a more stable graphics environment up and
  running

  Steps to take: basic ubtuntu 14.04 install. Boot up and run for a
  few minutes and then ...

  What happens: After running for a few minutes the graphics gets
  flacky.

  What should happen: Graphics should not get flaky.

  I have just installed ubuntu 14.04 on my new thinkpad t450s.
  Everything basically works, but something is very flaky about my
  keyboard or display or both. After running for awhile some apps
  (E.g., thunderbird and sometimes emacs for example) will display
  garbage. If I refresh by moving the screen around or changing
  buffers/tabs/etc. they can often recover.

  I see that there is an [Intel(R) Graphics Installer for Linux*
  1.0.7](https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads/2014/intelr-graphics-
  installer-linux-1.0.7). I am leery about just loading this and running
  it. Any suggestions about how I should proceed?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1445388] [NEW] Text Entry ignores all changes

2015-04-17 Thread Andreas Schildbach
Public bug reported:

I upgraded from Utopic to Vivid RC and had my German keyboard layout
replaced by US layout. Opened Control Center Text Entry and the Input
sources list is empty. I try to add German (or US) but nothing happens.
The list stays empty. When I try to switch any other setting it very
briefly acknowledges the change but then switches back to where is came
from.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1445388] Re: Text Entry ignores all changes

2015-04-17 Thread Andreas Schildbach
I found the reason for the strange behaviour of the system. After
upgrading, the file /home/username/.config/dconf/user was chowned to
root. So all write accesses failed.

Looks like there is some bug in the upgrading process.

Pretty sure. All I did is sudo update-manager -d and click on the
upgrade button.

Forgot to add to my last comment: of course I chowned the file back to
my user account and the problems are gone.

Title:
  Horrible noise via DisplayPort [regression]

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  This issue has been present and fixed two years ago and with Trusty
  Tahr it re-appeared:

  When logging in and my display is extended to two monitors, and also
  when the screen blanks, I get 3-5 seconds of horrible noise via

  The noise is loud enough to damage ears and loudspeakers, if volume
  has been set to a normal listening level.

Title:
  Active screen changes when suspending by lid close

Status in “pm-utils” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: acpi-support

  I have two screens, an internal Dell Latitude X1 and an external Dell
  2405FPW. Both screens are switched on, and the external monitor is
  connected to the VGA output of the X1.

  Using display preferences, I have switched off the external display,
  using just the internal display.

  When suspending by closing the lid, the external display is briefly
  activated and the internal display deactivated. The machine then goes
  to standby, which deactivates both displays. After resuming, the
  desktop appears on the external display, while the internal display is
  switched off. This behaviour is _not_ expected. I'd expect Ubuntu to
  respect my display configuration.

  This is _not_ an issue when suspending via pm-suspend. It is also not
  an issue when I change the lid action from suspend to e.g. blank
  screen and then close the lid.

  Environment: Jaunty, upgraded with recommended updates. xserver-xorg-

  Update to 1.2.6

Status in “usb-modeswitch” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Update usb-modeswitch to 1.2.6
  PTS changelog:
  usb-modeswitch (1.2.6+repack0-1) unstable; urgency=low

* New 1.2.6 upstream release
  - Several changes to streamline compiling as part of larger
projects, mostly in Makefile;
  - fix compiler warnings appearing in certain build environments;
  - new Quanta procedure for Quanta 1K3 LTE;
  - fix for error with cascaded hubs in dispatcher script.

* Repack the upstream tarball:
  - Drop the code copy of jimtcl.

* Replace 04_cope_with_repack patch by one to to use the
  package-provided jimsh and libjim.
* Bump usb-modeswitch-data depends to 20130607.

  usb-modeswitch (1.2.5+repack0-1) experimental; urgency=low

* New 1.2.5 upstream release
  - Initial support for MBIM devices, use with data package = 20121109;
  - checking for these is the automatic default, new parameter
NoMBIMCheck prevents the check per device in case of problems; new
global option to set delay_use of usb-storage (as low values may
prevent mode-switching);
  - fix for handling multi-configuration devices (thanks to Bjørn Mork
for advice).

* Repack the upstream tarball:
  - Drop the code copy of jimtcl.

* Bump usb-modeswitch-data depends to 20121109.
* Bump Standards-Version to 3.9.4 and debhelper B-D to 9 without
  changes needed.

  usb-modeswitch (1.2.4+repack0-1) experimental; urgency=low

* New 1.2.4 upstream release
  - Additional interface checks to prevent sending UFI commands to
non-storage interfaces (prompted by more ambiguous device IDs
popping up);
  - Change in SierraMode for handling newer devices which caused an
error abort before;
  - Makefile fix for parallelized make runs.

* Repack the upstream tarball:
  - Drop the code copy of jimtcl.

* Drop patch to disable logging as was (temporarily) enabled in 1.2.3.
* Refresh patches.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 49579] Re: screen doesn't lock when some menu is open

2013-11-05 Thread Andreas Schildbach
@Ctrl-Alt-L is also broken. You need to close menus and other popups
first, otherweise the key combination will simply be ignored.

Also, on Multimonitor setups sometimes the second screen still shows its
content, despite the lock being activated.

IMHO the only reliable way of locking your Ubuntu computer is logging
out (manually).
