[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1791493] Re: Unwanted VT switch from alt + arrow keys

2018-09-09 Thread Erno Kuusela
There is also a bug filed in 2015 about the same problem, with a barrage
of recent comments from 18.04 users:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1508146

I hesitate to mark this a duplicate though, since the 2015 bug is not
necessarily the same.

Unwanted VT switch from alt + arrow keys

Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Recently the VT switching shortcut keys changed from

This conflicts with many application keybindings, such as Firefox
  history back/forward.

I don't know which package is to blame, xorg-server is my best guess.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1791493] Re: Unwanted VT switch from alt + arrow keys

2018-09-09 Thread Erno Kuusela
I found a discussion of this bug at
https://askubuntu.com/questions/886593/alt-f4-switches-to-tty4 and a
workaround (kbd_mode -s). No clue to what gets it in the wrong mode to
begin with, though.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1779121] [NEW] mobile broadband is slow to start in wake from suspend (or system startup)

2018-06-28 Thread Erno Kuusela
Public bug reported:

On a ThinkPad 470s it takes ~ 40 seconds to gain connectivity on wake or
startup.

The log seems to incidate that there is first a 10 second delay in the
kernel recognising the USB device and assigning a serial port to it, and
then it takes ModemManager 20 seconds to open the device, and a further
13 seconds to go from unlocking the SIM ("locked" state) to getting an
ip address.

Apparently it starts in 10 seconds in Windows (see
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/SierraWireless-
EM7455-in-X1c5-is-Lenovo-going-to-fix-its-poor/td-p/3716748) so the 40+
seconds it's not a hardware property.

The log goes like this:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1636716] [NEW] editing files in lxc container over tramp/ssh frequently hangs

2016-10-26 Thread Erno Kuusela
Public bug reported:

I have a vanilla LXD setup, configured with instructions from
https://www.zenly.co.uk/lxd-on-ubuntu-xenial-16-04/ - so both host and
container are Ubuntu 16.04.

The problem is like the summary says. A workaround that fixes (or makes
less frequent?) the hangs: turn off tramp's use of the ssh ControlMaster
feature. I did this via customize, toggled the "Tramp Use Ssh
Controlmaster Options" setting to off.

When the hang happens, the minibuffer status is saying "Tramp: Found remote
shell prompt on ".
I can get out of the hang by hitting C-g 3 times but that tends to break
whatever action Emacs was doing over tramp.

ProblemType: Bug

alt-tabbing is enough to mess with keyboard layout in one of the windows.

layouts but none have worked.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1220426] Re: [nvidia-prime]Freeze while using touchpad

2014-11-18 Thread Erno Kuusela
End users: Please use another forum (eg. ubuntuforums) for user
discussion talking about workarounds, manually applying the patch, me
toos, or other peripheral discussions.

This bug tracker is about developing Ubuntu, and now you are with all
this chatter spamming countless developers whose efforts should be
focused on getting this fixed inside Ubuntu and in xorg. Not to mention
all us end users monitoring this bug and waiting the packages to be
fixed, at least 167 of us going by the affects count.

I'm using an Optimus laptop (Asus N43SL)
nvidia-prime is installed, so my nvidia dedicated graphics card (GT 540m) is
in use.

Once in a while, my screen will freeze, only when I use my touchpad.
This does not happen with my USB mouse.
This does not happen either when I uninstall nvidia-prime and use my intel
integrated graphics (HD3000).

I can temporarily solve the issue by doing a VT switch.

In the attached Xorg.0.log, you can see synaptics: ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad:
touchpad found each time I did a VT switch and regained control.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1272871] [NEW] hybrid-power script missing eDP panel support

2014-01-26 Thread Erno Kuusela
Public bug reported:

Last missing piece (after hacking around kernel issues) for me in getting
hybrid graphics working was to change this line in the hybrid-power script to
match my eDP panel:

lvds=$(xrandr | grep -i lvds | head -n1 |cut -d   -f 1)

the eDP line for me is
eDP-0 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 344mm
x 193mm

I changed it to read
lvds=$(xrandr | egrep -i lvds|edp | head -n1 |cut -d   -f 1)

maybe a more conservative regexp is more appropriate like edp-[+-9]
to reduce possibility of false negatives.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04

This does not happen with my USB mouse.
This does not happen either when I uninstall nvidia-prime and use my intel
integrated graphics (HD3000).

I can temporarily solve the issue by doing a VT switch.

In the attached Xorg.0.log, you can see synaptics: ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad:
touchpad found each time I did a VT switch and regained control.

utf-8 mode persists over reset, conflicts with UI

Status in “gnome-terminal” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Hello,

When I manually select ISO-8859-1 charset, the escape sequence to select
UTF-8 mode (ESC % G) will throw off
the gnome-terminal character set in the following ways:

  1) theUTF-8 mode persists even over a reset (tput reset or manually
  echoing ESC c).

  2) the UI still erroneously shows that 8859-1 is selected in the menu,
even though the terminal has reverted to UTF-8.

It took me a while to track down why my terminal stopped working when the
other end upgraded to a CentOS version
that for some reason started sending out the UTF-8 mode select sequence in
screen init with TERM=xterm,
since I trusted the terminal reset and gnome-terminal UI about the charset...

And please don't set the imporance to low, it's a big usability issue for a lot

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1222970] Re: layout options gone from keyboard preferences

2013-09-11 Thread Erno Kuusela
No, the Saucy comment is 5 days old:

This option has disappeared in Ubuntu Saucy. I'm not sure how to
explain this but it is simply not there. The Keyboard preferences have
no Layout tab, but there is a layout settings button, and when I
click it it takes me to the Input Sources tab of the Region
Language panel, which is mysteriously lacking any kind of 'Options'
button. The only button there opens up a virtual on-screen keyboard that
displays my broken keyboard layout to me with no way of changing which
keys behave which way. – Robru Sep 6 at 18:34

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1222838] Re: X fails to start with nvidia-prime on Acer Aspire V-573G

2013-09-09 Thread Erno Kuusela
Going by the failed to copy vbios to system memory clue I ended up at
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60829 where there is a
kernel patch to work around an ACPI bug for this machine. I haven't
tried it.

2013-09-09 Thread Erno Kuusela
Tried xorg-edgers and nvidia-325 first, but got just a hang.

Then tried the patch from above and it worked. glxinfo now shows nvidia
as renderer string!

I wonder if there's a way to switch between intel and nvidia?

Still happening on Precise for me as well. Should we file a new bug or
revert this status back to confirmed or new?

Bug description:
  Impact:
gnome-settings-daemon uses 100% cpu for ever in some cases

  Test Case:
Seems to happen sometimes after docking or connecting with vnc, try to
connect to the machine using a vnc client a few times and check there is no
numlock cycle and cpu usage loop starting

  Regression potential:
The numlock state could be wrongly set, restored on login in some cases

  Original message:
  -

I don't know how to reproduce this bug, but after varying amounts of
normal usage of my laptop, I notice gnome-settings-daemon is consuming
  100% (approx) CPU.

I am not sure how to restart gnome-settings-daemon, I tried opening a
terminal and running gnome-settings-daemon again but this crashes my
system - my external monitor switches off and my laptop locks up. I am
  able to reboot with SysRq+REISUB.

Sorry I cannot provide more information - it happens twice now, maybe
someone can tell me how to get more information for the next time this
  happens.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1119395] Re: Touchscree doesn't work on Fujitsu Stylistic Q702

2013-03-19 Thread Erno Kuusela
The rest of the functionality works after installing v3.9-rc3-raring
from kernel-ppa. It didn't really work properly in Qt either with the
earlier version, it didn't pass through click events properly to Qt
apps.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1119395] [NEW] Touchscree doesn't work on Fujitsu Stylistic Q702

2013-02-08 Thread Erno Kuusela
Public bug reported:

Funnily the touchscreen accepts one gesture after boot (drawing the selection
rect on the desktop). Nothing after that.
I don't know if this is through some mouse emulation or if the N-Trig DuoSense
handles both touchpad and touchscreen,
or if the unrecognised input device 04c5:138b somehow managed to produce input
(or something else).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1119395] Re: Touchscree doesn't work on Fujitsu Stylistic Q702

2013-02-08 Thread Erno Kuusela
Same happens after upgrading to current alpha version of raring. I get
the one touch swipe after reboot.

After looking at xorg log more closely it appears the DuoSense is recognised as
touchscreen and the unknown hid is
recognised as mouse:

[ 3.434] (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device HID 04c5:138b
(type: MOUSE, id 14)

[13.042] (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device N-trig DuoSense
(type: TOUCHSCREEN, id 17)

** Description changed:

- Funnily the touchscreen accepts one gesture after boot (drawing the selection
rect on the desktop). Nothing after that.
- I don't know if this is through some mouse emulation or if the N-Trig
DuoSense handles both touchpad and touchscreen,
- or if the unrecognised input device 04c5:138b somehow managed to produce
input (or something else).
+ Funnily the touchscreen accepts one gesture after boot (drawing the
+ selection rect on the desktop). Nothing after that.

Actually it seems this is just some kind of unity bug. Installing libqt4-demos
and running the fingerpaint example
results in perfectly working multitouch!

Bug description:
NetworkManager stops and starts dnsmasq very frequently (every few
minutes). During the brief window that dnsmasq is restarting,
hostname resolution doesn't work. dnsmasq is getting restarted
frequently enough that I see brief hostname resolution errors in
Chrome several times a day during normal web browsing.

This is on Precise with network-manager 0.9.4.0-0ubuntu4 and dnsmasq-
  base 2.59-4.

The frequent restarts seem to be triggered by IPv6 route
advertisements on my network. (See log snippet below.) When
NetworkManager gets a route advertisement, it reconfigures everything.
In the case of dnsmasq, this means stopping dnsmasq, writing a new
config file, and starting dnsmasq. NetworkManager should restart
dnsmasq only if it its configuration changes.

I'm attaching a snippet from /var/log/daemon.log on my system that
demonstrates a restart. This is with debug logging configured in
  /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 969359] Re: [keyboard]: gnome-settings-daemon consumes 100% cpu (and blinking numlock)

2013-01-28 Thread Erno Kuusela
@johrosina, I hadn't enabled proposed, thought fix released meant it was in
the regular updates already. With
proposed I went from 3.4.2-0ubuntu0.6 to 3.4.2-0ubuntu0.6.1, I'll see how it
goes.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1033242] Re: X server crashes

2013-01-23 Thread Erno Kuusela
Ok I have verified that my local fix works, this ErrorF triggers in the
beginning of AttendClient:

void
AttendClient (ClientPtr client)
{
OsCommPtr oc = (OsCommPtr)client-osPrivate;
int connection;

if (!oc) {
  ErrorF(osPrivate NULL in AttendClient!);
  return;
}

I had put the xserver-xorg-core package on hold while testing the local
modifications so it's theoretically possible
this was already fixed meanwhile in updates made to precise.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1100273] Re: transient dns errors

2013-01-16 Thread Erno Kuusela
Hmm, bug #1003842 seems to be about a schizophrenic split-dns configuration
where you have a mix of internet dns and
non-internet dns servers returned from dhcp. But these errors were from
browsing the web, eg youtube.com. And
I don't see evidence of this kind of dns configuration breakage anyway (name
servers have neighboring ip addresses).

** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 1003842
dnsmasq sometimes fails to resolve private names in networks with
non-equivalent nameservers

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1089782] [NEW] utf-8 mode persists over reset, conflicts with UI

2012-12-12 Thread Erno Kuusela
Public bug reported:

Hello,

When I manually select ISO-8859-1 charset, the escape sequence to select UTF-8
mode (ESC % G) will throw off
the gnome-terminal character set in the following ways:

1) theUTF-8 mode persists even over a reset (tput reset or manually
echoing ESC c).

2) the UI still erroneously shows that 8859-1 is selected in the menu,
even though the terminal has reverted to UTF-8.

It took me a while to track down why my terminal stopped working when the other
end upgraded to a CentOS version
that for some reason started sending out the UTF-8 mode select sequence in
screen init with TERM=xterm,
since I trusted the terminal reset and gnome-terminal UI about the charset...

Title:
utf-8 mode persists over reset, conflicts with UI

Status in “gnome-terminal” package in Ubuntu:
  New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 685321] Re: webgl doesn't work with chrome

2012-11-06 Thread Erno Kuusela
Now I can't reproduce the GPU process crash after restarting, all the
WebGL examples work fine.

I'll open up a new bug with a gdb stack trace of the GPU process if I
get a reproducible crash again.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 685321] Re: webgl doesn't work with chrome

2012-11-05 Thread Erno Kuusela
Because it doesn't work with Chrome, like reported in comment #7. It's the same
way on Precise with Chrome + Mesa,
the GPU process crashes. I don't know why it crashes on Chrome but works with
Firefox and Chromium.

There aren't separate WebGL implementations for different video cards in
Chrome/Chromium, it uses OpenGL/OpenGL ES.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 685321] Re: webgl doesn't work with chrome

2012-11-05 Thread Erno Kuusela
Chromium is the open source project that Chrome is based on (it includes
further proprietary stuff and Google branding). The version of Chromium
in Precise (18.x) is older than what you get with Chrome from the Google
stable channel (22.x).

I was referring to Chrome 22.x from the stable channel. Old Chrome
versions are rare since they're only distributed by Google and are
automatically updated.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 685321] Re: webgl doesn't work with chrome

2012-11-04 Thread Erno Kuusela
This sounds a little circular. It doesn't work with Mesa - it's
blacklisted by google - not a bug because it's blacklisted?

FWIW it seems to work fine with Chromium from Precise after disabling
the blacklist. Wonder what's different.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1057479] [NEW] wireless connections list hard to keep clean in network manager

2012-09-27 Thread Erno Kuusela
Public bug reported:

The wlan names that are remembered in the hidden network list and network
connections-wireless should
eventually expire and/or there should be a way to multi-select and delete
unwanted ones from the list (the
confirmation dialog makes it cumbersome to clean up otherwise).

If you are certain this is a bug please include the source package the
bug is in

network-manager-applet

 1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or
System - About Ubuntu

Description:Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS
Release:12.04

 2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
pkgname' or by checking in Software Center

Version: 0.9.4.1-0ubuntu2

 3) What you expected to happen
 4) What happened instead

These were covered above

** Affects: network-manager-applet (Ubuntu)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1035358] [NEW] bad interaction of ext4 error log vs disk health dialog/gnome-disk-utility

2012-08-10 Thread Erno Kuusela
Public bug reported:

A dialog pops up saying a hard disk is reporting health problems and the
examine button pops up gnome-disk-utility.
The smart status of all disks shows as OK.

I suspect it's getting the bad vibes from this kernel log message:

EXT4-fs (device): error count: 4
EXT4-fs (device): initial error at nnn: __ext4_get_inode_loc:3305: inode
: block nnn

But there's no obvious way to address this problem in gnome-disk-utility, and
it's just the kernel dumping
the filesystem error log.

see eg this message
http://lkml.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/1012.3/00502.html

This disk has once upon a time been connected to a flaky cable or controller,
and the error log hasn't
been cleared because it's an external disk that's mounted using the desktop
mount mechanism under /media which
doesn't get periodical fsck's. But I guess this would also happen if the error
happened in the current setup.

So it's probably possible for me to fix it by finding the right partition in
the gnome disk utility and clicking the fsck button,
but there's no reasonable way a user could know that.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 586273] Re: NetworkManager prefers slower 11b connection to 11a connection

It's a good idea but I don't think you're supposed to mark upstreamable bugs as
invalid. If you want to triage
this bug you can do this:

We have a city/university network with the same ssid, and typically there are

2011-10-18 Thread Erno Kuusela
attached is xev output.

by system settings, do you mean the System Settings app? That contains Power
and Keyboard at least that might
be relevant. I see no keyboard related stuff under Power nor any
hibernate/suspend related stuff under Keyboard-Shortcuts-System.
