[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1798790] Re: Ubuntu login screen never appears when using the Nvidia driver (and setting WaylandEnable=false fixes it)

2019-05-28 Thread Gert Kruger
I experienced the same problem when I tried to install Ubuntu 19.04 with
the initial option to install third party drivers. After installation
and the first reboot, the system will not start up. I will see if I can
reproduce this and post the log report.

I have a Dell Vostro 3670 PC with the following deatils:

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20GHz;
Motherboard: Dell Ince OV8F20;
12 GB RAM;
NVIDIA Corporation GP107 [GeForce GTX 1050] [10de:1c81] (rev a1) (prog-if 00
[VGA controller]);

  ---

  The boot process hangs with the last message being "started bpfilter".
  There is unusual Network activity during that time. The light of the
  WiFi adapter is blinking a lot.

  I am not sure the problem is with the gdm3 package. As a matter of
  fact, I would remove it and let someone more experienced to set it.
  I'm afraid I might break something, though.

  The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem: 1. Boot Ubuntu 18.10 with the Nvidia proprietary drivers
  installed.

  The behavior you expected: I expected Ubuntu 18.10 to boot normally.

  The behavior you actually encountered: The computer gets stuck in a
  command-like environment with the last message being "started
  bpfilter". You can't type any commands.

  I have found that uninstalling the Nvidia proprietary drivers by going
  into recovery mode fixes the issue.

  Booting with the earlier kernel doesn't fix the issue. Installing the
  earlier v.340 driver also doesn't fix the issue.

  This (https://askubuntu.com/questions/1032639/ubuntu-18-04-stuck-in-
  boot-after-starting-gnome-display-manager-on-intel-graphic) seems
  relevant. This is where I found the "solution".

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1824670] Re: Boot to black screen after Kubuntu 19.04 install

2019-05-27 Thread Gert Kruger
I have not tried running SDDM rather than the normal Ubuntu Desktop.
Will try that tomorrow.

I still get the same error with Ubuntu 19.04 when I try to install the
Nvidia driver. Anyone with a solution?

  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Legacy laptop, Dell Vostro 1720, booted to black screen after fresh
  full disk install. Using ctrl-alt-f2 to drop to a terminal and
  issuing "startx" completed the boot process.

  Installed NVidia 340 driver which crashed the current session and sent
  me to an endless GUI (sddm?) login loop where login immediately
  crashed back to the GUI login.

  Rebooting from the login screen worked as expected and system is
  running fine now.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1752053] Re: nvidia-390 fails to boot graphical display

2019-05-23 Thread Gert Kruger
I have a NVIDIA Corporation GP107 [GeForce GTX 1050] card and ubuntu 19.04
installed. After installing the lastest Nvidia driver-430, the dektop GUI is
lost when you reboot (18.10 gave the same issue). I tried many proposed
solutions, including the one above. Nothing worked.
I finally found a solution for this Nvidia driver issue (on ubuntu 18 and 19).
See instructions at the top at
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2419319=nvidia+drivers, it
worked for me!

Bug description:
  I'm using Bionic with the new 4.15 kernel. I've been using the
  nvidia-384 driver with no problem for a while. Today I issued "sudo
  apt-get upgrade" and I was prompted to upgrade the nvidia driver to
  the nvidia-390. After installing the driver and rebooting, I was only
  able to boot in to the tty terminal. The graphical display failed to
  boot. I have had similar problems with nvidia driver version 390 with
  Arch Linux and with Open Suse Tumbleweed.
