[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1505584] Re: [Realtek ALC887-VD] Playback only through 2 channels by default

2021-08-26 Thread Joachim R.
I have a worse bug : after setting alsamixer to 6ch and restarting pulseaudio,
I have no rear sound and no dialog in 5.1 application (I select a 5.1 profile
in pulseaudio
+ the sound section in Ubuntu setting pannel is unable to test the speakers
(they remain silent while the system sound can actually be played in other
manner).
This occurs at least in Ubuntu 20.04 and 21.04

Bug description:
Ubuntu does not detect my 5.1 surround sound[0] by default. In order
to get it detected, I have to do the following:

  1) Open alsamixer
  2) Change the "Channel Mode" setting from "2ch" to "6ch" (there is also a
"4ch" setting)
  3) `pulseaudio -k`

I have to do this on every boot, as the "6ch" setting is not
  remembered.

[0] My soundcard and sound system are 5.1, but I actually only have front
left, center, right and the subwoofer. This shouldn't affect how Ubuntu acts
at all (because it can't know what speakers I have plugged in to my subwoofer),
but will mean that I can't report on whether or not rear channels are working
as expected.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1170230] Re: Transmission launcher isn't translated

2020-08-11 Thread Joachim R.
transmission-gtk is now translated in Franch, but with some errors.
For example, in the property window of a download, go in "pairs" thumbs. If you
see one with a question mark, overring it will show "Nous n'étranglons plus ce
pair, mais il n'est pas intéressé". This means "We do not strangle this peer
anymore, but he is not interested" (!)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 104617] Re: CMI8738 5.1 center speaker is mute

2019-12-25 Thread Joachim R.
CMI8738 is not well-supported by alsa.

Running with a center channel volume issue (center volume constant,
whatever the master volume).

I found out that master volume worked only for front/rear channel, not
center which stick to its initial value.

Pulseaudio volume for separate channel are not effectless.

amixer set no gauge for center/lfe, hence impossible to change it.

Seems that with this chip, when in 5.1 mic is not available and Mic-in
and center/lfe is on the same control.

I don't know if alsa is wrong or if CMI8738 is just a crap.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 41179]

2019-02-20 Thread Joachim R.
The madest thing for me is that now other browsers integrate with platform
keyring. Why not Firefox ?
 - Since other browsers have it, political arguments are weak
 - Since Quantum overhaul, technical one are weak too. Mozilla had an
opportunity to deal with is issue that is a *major* usability and security
issue.

Let's say FF displays the profile in a corner like Google Chrome. Let's say
this could be associated with a FF Sync account. On profile switch, it could
ask for password or not, depending on a user profile locking pref.
We already know the OS user is able to unlock all FF identifier stores, because
this is how keyring work. But with a live (vs on startup) profile management,
FF could offer the opportunity to manage switching.

Just my 2 cents, but 12 years on, it is time to look at what other
successful browser are doing...

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1485020] Re: firefox 40 shows a non-overrideable security error when talking to a captive portal

2018-09-07 Thread Joachim R.
I don't know if this is the right place to discuss things that are part
of browser security policy. As @mpt stated, browser devs are evaluating
the risk for people not aware of the issue. I doubt Ubuntu dev teams
could do anything with that, this is not a technical failure that they
could resolve, so we could close this bug. And be sure the day Ubuntu
will loosen browsers security policies, it will make a big "bad buzz",
and the all distro will be reported as "less protecting people" than
distro XXX.

IMHO, even if this case (that happened to me too) is annoying, I prefer
blaming the service provider rather than the browser. And once all
browsers have been updated, the service provider will obviously become
aware of the problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1512662] Re: Firefox crash when page contains video (SIGSEV in __XRead)

2018-09-07 Thread Joachim R.
No, I think the bug was solved by a Firefox update 2 years ago.
It was reproducible *anytime* with always the same stack trace in the same
function. I'm sorry, it was very annoying but I forgot to close this report
when it disappeared.

Title:
Firefox crash when page contains video (SIGSEV in __XRead)

Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Any web page containing a video crash 100% of the time
The crash is triggered by :
   - auto-played video
   - closing a page with video playing
   - try to control video (start/stop/FFWD/RWD)

This occurs since Ubuntu 15.04 an still occurs after Ubuntu 15.10
  dist-upgrade.

It is a show stopper for firefox, I'm forced to watch Youtube or
whatever website with video with Chromium that doesn't have this
  issue.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1268257] Re: nvidia-331-updates 331.38-0ubuntu3: nvidia-331-updates kernel module failed to build, with only error: objdump: '... .tmp_nv.o': No such file

2015-01-22 Thread Joachim R.
@dino99 : the bug is invalid for nvidia-graphics-drivers-331-updates but still
exists.
As seen in a useless comment, this must be a stop for people coming from MS
Windows.

When you look at the workaround, it may be a lightdm or apt bug. What do you
suggest ?
Flagging this bug as invalid seems OK, but not sufficient nor constructive. A
workaround is a workaround, not a fix nor an acceptable situation.
Helping bug reporter to find the right package to report against may help to
solve bug #1.

@wgrant: thanx

@all : at least some motivated dev should take a look at what is the
origin of the bug to report it against the right package(s)

Indeed. I have much more alert of this kind since 14.10.
System update is a huge source of problems, an gnome15 became unusable too.

Unfortunately the following is a rather generic error (which can be
caused be a number of problems), and there's no way to see what went

No wonder this bug report has so many duplicates, different problems
 leading to the same error.

This duplicate is my fault, my apport reported a different nvidia

it was the same bug.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1277903] Re: after upgrade to 14.04(lsb_release), system settings appearance lost

2014-04-25 Thread Joachim R.
I could have the same issue.
Symptoms :
 - I cannot change any settings.
 - Appearance settings are greyed out or reset instantly when I click to change
any parameter.
 - cannot change background
 - cannot change launcher icons

At each session startup, I can see my usual background and unity
launched replaced by default ones !

2014-04-25 Thread Joachim R.
unity-control-center logs this when I try to change background :

(unity-control-center:9702): dconf-WARNING **: failed to commit changes
to dconf:
GDBus.Error:org.gtk.GDBus.UnmappedGError.Quark._g_2dfile_2derror_2dquark.Code2:
Cannot open dconf database: Failed to open file
'/home/user/.config/dconf/user': Permission denied

The problem was the following : /home/user/.config/dconf/user file owner
changed to root:root during upgrade.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 157478] Re: Brasero reports incorrect medium size status

2012-01-27 Thread Joachim R.
Ubuntu 11.04 get the same problem. I try several blank CD-Rs, brasero
claims they are not blank but have 23min free.

You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop

Title:
Brasero reports incorrect medium size status

Status in “brasero” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:
  1) Insert a normal fresh CD-R into the drive.
  2) Right click on an .iso file and Open with Brasero.

  Actual results:
Brasero opens and displays incorrect medium information and will not burn
anything, claiming that the medium is not writable.
Also, the .iso file is not selected (already a bug #153523)

  Expected Results:
Basero shows correct medium size and allows writing to disc.

  Note:
Immediately after this, I tried right-click Open with CD/DVD creator and
that worked fine, so it was definitely not a faulty CD-R blank.

Below is a copy of what is shown in the Brasero window:
  Drive: ASUS SCB-2408

  Type: CD-R
  Size: 17179869184.0GB of Data
  Contents:
Status: the medium is not writable

2012-01-27 Thread Joachim R.
Found a workaround for oneiric : 1st copy to disk image, then copy
image to disc. It says 136,7Mo remaining but starts writing.

This shouldn't be a whishlisty but a regression as the proxy exceptions
were available in proxy settings before oneiric.
