[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1973084] Re: transmission-daemon high RAM usage
I caught transmission-daemon using 12Gb (!) of RAM on my AMD64 system recently, and for what it's worth, the Transmission 4.0.2 packages from UbuntuHandbook PPA fix this issue. I'd noticed 3.0.0 using insane amounts of RAM many times before (workaround was to restart the daemon), but seeing it use 12Gb really made me look for a newer version. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1435020] Re: Custom Shortcut keybindings does not work
Actually I'm experiencing it on Ubuntu 18.04 using Unity 7. Running unity-settings-daemon manually produces the following message: (unity-settings-daemon:4065): media-keys-plugin-WARNING **: 15:32:32.495: Grab failed for some keys, another application may already have access the them. The consequence of this is none of the keyboard shortcuts defined in Keyboard Settings Shortcuts tab work except for those defined under Windows. This also includes other key combinations like laptop screen brightness controls (Fn+F8/F9 on my laptop), hotkey launchers like Ctrl- Alt-t for new terminal, and custom shortcuts. Strangely it only happens sometimes. Most times I log in and the media keys etc all work fine. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1026553] Re: Double clicking Workspace Switcher too fast switches workspaces and moves windows unpredictably
[ Chris Townsend ] * Expo plugin: Make sure the Expo animation is completed before allowing clicks to be handled. (LP: #1026553) Sorry to be a bother, but this fix forces me to wait until the animation is finished before right clicking on my desired desktop, otherwise the plugin goes straight back to the workspace I came from. Example: * My desktop wall is 6 workspaces arranged as 3x2. * I use the top right hot corner to activate Expo. * Expo animation is set to the default 0.3 seconds. When I use the top right hot corner, I move my mouse quickly to where I anticipate my desired workspace to be. I then right click on that as soon as I realise my mouse is above that, which is usually before the Expo animation finishes. I then get dropped back to the workspace I came from. This happens more than 50% of the time (I've had 15.04 installed for less than 24 hours). I tried a workaround: setting the animation speed to 0.1 and 0.2 seconds, which is too fast for me and is visually jarring. 0.3 seconds is nice, but makes Expo uncomfortable to use. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1026553 Title: Double clicking Workspace Switcher too fast switches workspaces and moves windows unpredictably Status in Compiz: Fix Committed Status in Compiz 0.9.11 series: Triaged Status in compiz package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Bug description: If you click the workspace switcher twice you get back to the workspace you were on. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1192028] Re: Compiz refresh rate resets to 50 Hz automatically
Yep Chris, it's specific to nvidia binary driver users. I've not had the problem when using nouveau, nor on other computers using the open source radeon drivers (or fglrx for that matter). https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/92599 (which is an issue with nvidia's DynamicTwinView feature not reporting the correct refresh rate) apparently got fixed, which is what you might be seeing in the code with forced 60Hz Opening CCSM and typing 60 and pressing enter in the refresh rate box makes the desktop super smooth on my machine (from choppy). This is using the packaged nvidia binary driver in 14.04 (but it's been happening for many releases now). It doesn't remember the setting across reboots though. Is there some way I can check what refresh rate compiz is actually using? The field in CCSM is blank each time I start it. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1240957] Re: Scrolling behaviour and window focus has changed and is inconsistent
A bit more testing (all on Ubuntu 14.04 as of 2014-04-01). XFCE4 (apt-get install xubuntu-desktop): Windows get focused on scroll events, so this bug could not be tested there. Couldn't easily find a setting to turn that off (I assume it's buried somewhere though). Nautilus, gEdit, mousepad all scroll normally, but of course they all are focused and brought to the top of the window stack on the first scroll event. FWIW, mousepad installed on Ubuntu 13.10 under the regular Unity 7 desktop scrolls without focus just fine. I noticed it's a GTK2 app. KDE: Kate scrolls without focus, but gEdit does not. (just had to check whether KDE native apps had a similar issue). So it's basically GTK3 apps when not running under Gnome-Shell, and only with a mouse scrollwheel but not a touchpad, that have this issue with unfocused scrolling. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1240957 Title: Scrolling behaviour and window focus has changed and is inconsistent Status in GTK+ GUI Toolkit: Fix Released Status in X.Org X server: Confirmed Status in “gtk+3.0” package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in “xorg-server” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: I wasn't sure which package to file this bug against, but seeing as it's a general desktop usability/consistency bug, the top level desktop environment seemed like a good target. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1240957] Re: Scrolling behaviour and window focus has changed and is inconsistent
Thanks for responding Sebastien. This bug isn't about switching workspaces with scroll events, it's about being able to scroll windows with a mouse that aren't in focus. Basically, it works with a touchpad (all windows are able to scroll without focus), but not with a mouse scrollwheel. The default X desktop behaviour since forever has been to be able to scroll any scrollable window that the pointer is hovering above, regardless of whether it's in focus or not. For the record, I've been affected by this bug even today, where I wanted to have two gEdit windows open side by side, and had to keep focusing the windows to scroll them, whereas normally I'd just hover over one window and scroll it while editing the other with the keyboard. This bug is also a regression from Ubuntu 12.04.. so might be more important if you have a bunch of 12.04 LTS users upgrading next month.
Just did some testing (with two gEdit windows) this morning, Ubuntu 14.04 updated to the latest packages as of today (2014-04-01). I apt-get installed ubuntu-gnome-desktop and kubuntu-desktop on a regular Ubuntu 14.04 install. GNOME desktop (gnome-shell): Both gEdit windows can be scrolled with the pointer hovering over the window, regardless of focus. GNOME desktop classic (I guess still gnome shell?): Same as GNOME desktop, scrolling works while hovering, regardless of focus. KDE plasma desktop: gEdit window needs to be focused to be scrolled Ubuntu Unity desktop: gEdit window needs to be focused to be scrolled And on Ubuntu 14.04 (around beta 1 packages) on a netbook with a touchpad and mouse connected: Nautilus windows can be scrolled with the touchpad while hovering, regardless of focus, but NOT with the mouse. So, what makes the gnome-shell desktop different to Unity and KDE? The X server, GTK etc are all the same. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1192028] Re: Compiz refresh rate resets to 50 Hz automatically
If this bug isn't going to be fixed the correct way, at least hard code compiz to default to 60Hz. How often is 50Hz really the correct default these days? Mind you, the default stuttery performance with the nvidia binary driver on 14.04 could hardly be called 50Hz. The cause of this framerate problem is the DynamicTwinView feature of the NVIDIA graphics driver. It appears to be a documented feature of the driver, and has been for several years: --- Quote from the NVIDIA documentation --- Option DynamicTwinView boolean Enable or disable support for dynamically configuring TwinView on this X screen. When DynamicTwinView is enabled (the default), the refresh rate of a mode (reported through XF86VidMode or XRandR) does not correctly report the refresh rate, but instead is a unique number such that each MetaMode has a different value. Sorry to double post.. just thought I'd add that Nautilus in Ubuntu 12.10 has Rename in the right-click menu. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1064962 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1064962 Marked this bug as a dupe of #1064962, because there's more focus on that report, and seems to be the same issue. Thanks Dmitry for your workaround, brilliant. I can live with minimising/maximising a window once to get the menu back :) However, unfortunate that this bug made it through, it's even present on the official 12.10 live media :( ** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 1064962 Global menubar items do not work when opening a document directly from nautilus with no LibreOffice instance running -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to libreoffice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1059389 Title: Global menu in LO documents sometimes disappears Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Global menu in LO documents sometimes disappears. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 876105] Re: Remote Desktop Viewer (vinagre) does not remember passwords
Sigh indeed Michael :) .. what you described is case #4 in my initial report.. Vinagre remembers passwords while it is still open, as soon as it's closed, all passwords are forgotten. (mind you, I haven't tried this with multiple hosts to see if only the last used password is remembered..?) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to vinagre in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/876105 Title: Remote Desktop Viewer (vinagre) does not remember passwords Status in “vinagre” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I'm using Vinagre in Ubuntu 11.10 AMD64, and have found that it does not remember passwords (when told to via the Remember this credential checkbox), except when a connection has been established, disconnected, then the Remote - Recent Connections menu is used (without closing Vinagre; after being closed it will not remember the password). Give this a go: (#4 is the only combination that works for remembering passwords) 1. Connect to site - enter password - check Remember this credential - connect. Bookmark site.
