on Sony with ATI Mobility M1

I observe a line of garbled pixels under the mouse cursor, for example
on the initial login screen, and then they stay there no matter what
is redrawn, like that they are "burned in". Moving mouse cursor keep
these pixels on the initial location, and doesn't produce new, until
something happens, when the "burned in" pixels appear somewhere else,
but again under the current place of the cursor.

The effect never happens in Vesa mode. Here's conf, I don't know what
  else I should try:

When I go for a virtual monitor by issuing command "xrandr --output
LVDS1 --fb 1600x1200 --panning 1600x1200" on a monitor working at
resolution 1024x768 (as I did before upgrading from Ubuntu 11.04 to
Ubuntu 11.10), the WM bars on top and left side of the screen (in
Unity) look like extending to the new area, but I cannot move the
pointer to the new extra area and so I cannot pan. As far as I
understood by reading around, this *could* be a bug in package "xorg-

  SRU Request:

  [IMPACT]
A bug in the version of xorg-server in precise prevents users from scaling
screen resolution. When attempting to do so, as was possible in Natty and
earlier, and which is possible in Quantal+, the mouse pointer remains locked
inside the old resolution. This prevents users of small screens such as
netbooks from scaling to a greater screen resolution.

  [Test Case]
  - On a netbook with intel chipset, such as a Dell Mini 9 or 10, scale the
display by using the following command:

  xrandr --output LVDS1 --panning 1280x750 --scale 1.25x1.25

See if the mouse moves correctly to all screen extremities, and is not
confined by a transparent border at 1024x600

  [Regression Potential]
This is fixed with a patch backported from the xorg-server version in
Quantal. In theory it should just affect screen which are scaled and panned,
which is uncommon. If so, the patch can be backed out.

  Original Bug Description:
in kubuntu (and ubuntu) 11.04 i used to enlarge my laptop screen like so

  xrandr --output LVDS1 --scale 1.2x1.2

this worked fine: the desktop scaled to larger size correctly .
After upgrading to 11.10, in kde the desktop still resizes
correctly, but the movement of the mouse is restricted to an area equal to
the screen size *before* issuing the scaling command. .. Ie let's say
the mode is 1366x768 and I do xrandr --output LVDS1 --scale 1.2x1.2 the
screen size changes to 1640x922 but the mouse moves in an area the size of
1366x768 in the top left of the screen and then 'hits a wall' preventing
it to move. I also tried ubuntu 11.10 with gnome: here the screen also
resizes, but I have the same issue with the mouse, and the extended area
  of the desktop is black...

Some time ago there was a similar issue, which was resolved later. Now it
seems
  to be back...

Title:
Please patch xserver-xorg-video-sis (was: SiS driver crashes Xserver
  with EXA acceleration)

Status in xserver-xorg-video-sis:
  Confirmed
Status in xserver-xorg-video-sis package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in xserver-xorg-video-sis-lts-raring package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix
Status in xserver-xorg-video-sis package in Baltix:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  [TRIAGE NOTE]
xserver-xorg-video-all metapackage should not depend on
xserver-xorg-video-sis because it makes Ubuntu >= 12.10 unusable/uninstallable
for SiS users, and upstream X shows little interest in fixing/patching the SiS
driver.

  [WORKAROUND]:
For SiS users that already have Ubuntu installed, they can create an
/etc/X11/xorg.conf file with the following contents:

  Section "Device"
  Identifier "Configured Video Device"
  Option "NoAccel" "true"
  EndSection

  Section "Monitor"
  Identifier "Configured Monitor"
  EndSection

  Section "Screen"
  Identifier "Default Screen"
  Monitor "Configured Monitor"
  Device "Configured Video Device"
  EndSection

  [ORIGINAL REPORT]:

After Upgrade to 12.10. The Xserver crashes.
I have tried lightdm und gdm.
Both of them load the Mouse and Background then they restart.

Xorg crash - Fullscreen causing crash

Status in X.Org X server:
  Invalid
Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I was listening to this YouTube video:
  http://www.infinitelooper.com/?v=-tJYN-eG1zkp=n

When I decided to make it full screen, but it didn't want to go, so I
very quickly double-clicked on it twice, and then the entire screen
went black. And no matter what I did, it go away. Although I could
still hear the music from the video. As I couldn't do anything really
about it I had to hold down my power button and force it to shutdown.
And when it started up the screen was fine. It is a laptop so I don't
think that the monitor just turned off or something.

Title:
[GM965] GPU lockup running OpenGL applications on Dell Vostro 1510

Status in Mesa:
  Fix Released
Status in mesa package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
Hello, I'm suffering a GPU lockup problem with Ubuntu 14.10 64-bit on
a Dell Vostro 1510 laptop with Intel graphics. The problem used to
arise also with Ubuntu 14.04 and is always reproducible with glmark2
on the LiveCD. Just to run the ideas benchmark of glmark2 to trigger
the lockup in few seconds (glmark2 -b ideas). Other OpenGL
applications also causes the lockup (e.g. FooBillard++, my self-made
SDL applications). Memory test passed, BIOS at the latest version.
Don't know if the following is a good point but I think that the
problem is not caused by a failing hardware because it works fine on
Windows. I tried with the latest Intel upstream kernel
  (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-
  next/current/) and upstream X.org (https://launchpad.net/~xorg-
  edgers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa), no change.

  [Personal Notes]
I'm new to Ubuntu's world, I hope I've done things right, if not please tell
me and I will resend the report or supply more information. I've created the
bug report with ubuntu-bug xorg --save from another machine via SSH while the
sick machine was frozen. It seemed to me more logical than using ubuntu-bug
directly when the system is working fine. I've collected other information via
SSH during the same lockup: dmesg, Xorg.0.log, i915_error_state. The latter was
added as attachment.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1413710]

2015-05-18 Thread Mattst88
I suspect this may be another duplicate of the bug 80568, fixed (worked-
around) by this commit:

commit c4fd0c9052dd391d6f2e9bb8e6da209dfc7ef35b
Author: Kenneth Graunke kenn...@whitecape.org
Date: Sat Jan 17 23:21:15 2015 -0800

i965: Work around mysterious Gen4 GPU hangs with minimal state changes.

Gen4 hardware appears to GPU hang frequently when using Chromium, and
also when running 'glmark2 -b ideas'. Most of the error states contain
3DPRIMITIVE commands in quick succession, with very few state packets
between them - usually VERTEX_BUFFERS/ELEMENTS and CONSTANT_BUFFER.

I trimmed an apitrace of the glmark2 hang down to two draw calls with a
glUniformMatrix4fv call between the two. Either draw by itself works
fine, but together, they hang the GPU. Removing the glUniform call
makes the hangs disappear. In the hardware state, this translates to
removing the CONSTANT_BUFFER packet between the two 3DPRIMITIVE packets.

Flushing before emitting CONSTANT_BUFFER packets also appears to make
the hangs disappear. I observed a slowdown in glxgears by doing it all
the time, so I've chosen to only do it when BRW_NEW_BATCH and
BRW_NEW_PSP are unset (i.e. we haven't done a CS_URB_STATE change or
already flushed the whole pipeline).

I'd much rather understand the problem, but at this point, I don't see
how we'd ever be able to track it down further. We have no real tools,
and the hardware people moved on years ago. I've analyzed 20+ error
states and read every scrap of documentation I could find.

Title:
Xorg crash - Fullscreen causing crash

Status in X.Org X server:
  Confirmed

[GM965] GPU lockup running OpenGL applications on Dell Vostro 1510

Status in Mesa:
  Fix Released
Status in mesa package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
Hello, I'm suffering a GPU lockup problem with Ubuntu 14.10 64-bit on
a Dell Vostro 1510 laptop with Intel graphics. The problem used to
arise also with Ubuntu 14.04 and is always reproducible with glmark2
on the LiveCD. Just to run the ideas benchmark of glmark2 to trigger
the lockup in few seconds (glmark2 -b ideas). Other OpenGL
applications also causes the lockup (e.g. FooBillard++, my self-made
SDL applications). Memory test passed, BIOS at the latest version.
Don't know if the following is a good point but I think that the
problem is not caused by a failing hardware because it works fine on
Windows. I tried with the latest Intel upstream kernel
  (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-
  next/current/) and upstream X.org (https://launchpad.net/~xorg-
  edgers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa), no change.

  [Personal Notes]
I'm new to Ubuntu's world, I hope I've done things right, if not please tell
me and I will resend the report or supply more information. I've created the
bug report with ubuntu-bug xorg --save from another machine via SSH while the
sick machine was frozen. It seemed to me more logical than using ubuntu-bug
directly when the system is working fine. I've collected other information via
SSH during the same lockup: dmesg, Xorg.0.log, i915_error_state. The latter was
added as attachment.

  (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-
  next/current/) and upstream X.org (https://launchpad.net/~xorg-
  edgers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa), no change.

on the LiveCD. Just to run the ideas benchmark of glmark2 to trigger
the lockup in few seconds (glmark2 -b ideas). Other OpenGL
applications also causes the lockup (e.g. FooBillard++, my self-made
SDL applications). Memory test passed, BIOS at the latest version.
Don't know if the following is a good point but I think that the
problem is not caused by a failing hardware because it works fine on
Windows. I tried with the latest Intel upstream kernel
  (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-
  next/current/) and upstream X.org (https://launchpad.net/~xorg-
  edgers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa), no change.

  [Personal Notes]
I'm new to Ubuntu's world, I hope I've done things right, if not please tell
me and I will resend the report or supply more information. I've created the
bug report with ubuntu-bug xorg --save from another machine via SSH while the
sick machine was frozen. It seemed to me more logical than using ubuntu-bug
directly when the system is working fine. I've collected other information via
SSH during the same lockup: dmesg, Xorg.0.log, i915_error_state. The latter was
added as attachment.

Title:
[GM965] GPU lockup running OpenGL applications on Dell Vostro 1510

Status in Mesa:
  Fix Released
Status in mesa package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
Hello, I'm suffering a GPU lockup problem with Ubuntu 14.10 64-bit on
a Dell Vostro 1510 laptop with Intel graphics. The problem used to
arise also with Ubuntu 14.04 and is always reproducible with glmark2
on the LiveCD. Just to run the ideas benchmark of glmark2 to trigger
the lockup in few seconds (glmark2 -b ideas). Other OpenGL
applications also causes the lockup (e.g. FooBillard++, my self-made
SDL applications). Memory test passed, BIOS at the latest version.
Don't know if the following is a good point but I think that the
problem is not caused by a failing hardware because it works fine on
Windows. I tried with the latest Intel upstream kernel
  (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-
  next/current/) and upstream X.org (https://launchpad.net/~xorg-
  edgers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa), no change.

  [Personal Notes]
I'm new to Ubuntu's world, I hope I've done things right, if not please tell
me and I will resend the report or supply more information. I've created the
bug report with ubuntu-bug xorg --save from another machine via SSH while the
sick machine was frozen. It seemed to me more logical than using ubuntu-bug
directly when the system is working fine. I've collected other information via
SSH during the same lockup: dmesg, Xorg.0.log, i915_error_state. The latter was
added as attachment.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1388612]

2015-01-28 Thread Mattst88
(In reply to Janus Troelsen from comment #90)
The issue is resolved in Chrome for me; thank you Kenneth, your patch makes
it so that I do not have this issue every day on YouTube. However,
foobilliardplus does make the GPU hang. See my attachment for a screenshot
 showing display corruption.

 Can we reopen this?

We're up to 90 comments, and the foobillardplus crash must be different
from the one you confirmed is fixed. Let's file a new bug.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 968759]

2013-08-08 Thread Mattst88-h
Rafał, is there something else that needs to be done for this bug, short
of a new flash player that doesn't use SSE2?

  -
This is apparently caused by the use of SSE2 instructions in new versions of
adobe flash binaries, but only on older CPU's not implementing SSE2. There is
an upstream bug reported for this:
https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bugid=3161034

Note that this code is binary only outside of Adobe.

Where lernid, and apparently epiphany-browser use webkit they don't
catch SIGILL. Both crash and close with the message Illegal
  Instruction sent to the console.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 968759]

2013-06-19 Thread Mattst88-h
(In reply to Matt Turner from comment #6)
Jim, there was a whole thread on the gentoo-dev mailing list about this
sse2check (that apparently you did not see?)

Wouldn't it be better if we just did this?

 IUSE=... sse2
 REQUIRED_USE=sse2

Jeroen,
Now that you're maintaining adobe-flash, might I ask you to consider using
REQUIRED_USE=sse2 to allow users to immediately know that SSE2 is required?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 87530]

2013-03-12 Thread Mattst88
This bug is older than the one I'm marking it as a duplicate of. The
other has more information and logs, so I figured it'd be better to not
lose that stuff. Will move CCs in this bug to the other.

*** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 23996 ***

  screen again.

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128
  PF/PRO AGP 4x TMDS

So, I suspect this may be a problem: Ubuntu enables DRI by default in
xorg.conf, it tries to load r128 module but we have this bug open for some time
now:
  https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5562

I saw this in Edgy Eft (and Fedora Core 6) too - workaround for
installing it was to replace /etc/X11/xorg.conf with working one that
is different for these lines I need to comment:

  # Load glx
  # Load dri

  # Section DRI
  # Mode 0666
  # EndSection

With Edgy Eft it was different in that way that I had console working,
  not with Herd 4 .

One can get Ati Rage 128 DRI working only with this kernel config:

  CONFIG_DRM=y
  CONFIG_DRM_R128=y

It gives ~ 460 fps in glxgears then.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1020733]

2013-01-07 Thread Mattst88
(In reply to comment #30)
Hello all, I used to see very similar behaviour on my Sandy Bridge box.
Interestingly I'm also using an Asrock Board (H67M-GE). That indicates that
it might be a hardware issue. I flashed the latest BIOS version provided bei
Asrock (V 2.10, used to have 1.40 or 1.50 before, don't remember exactly)
and the issue went away for me, hasn't ever re-appeared since.

If I remember correctly, the BIOS changelog mentioned something about fixing
the voltage settings of the GPU for the change to version 1.60. Asrock's
documentation is rather poor unfortunately, but searching the web for
h67m-ge igpu voltage yields several hits with descriptions of the BIOS
 update:
Modify default setting for IGPU voltage.

As the bug seems to appear only with RC6 enabled there might be a connection
 here.
If there's no new BIOS available for other boards, manually changing IGPU in
the BIOS/UEFI might also work around the issue maybe.

 Maybe that helps someone.

 Regards,
 Stefan

Good call! ASRock's website doesn't appear to have direct links to older
BIOS versions, but if you guess the links, and it turns up these
versions:

http://download.asrock.com/bios/1155/H67M(1.60)WIN.zip
http://download.asrock.com/bios/1155/H67M(1.70)WIN.zip
http://download.asrock.com/bios/1155/H67M(1.80)WIN.zip

So if someone has an older revision B2 chipset they can try these
versions. I RMA'd my board (given that it /was/ recalled because of the
SATA issues) and got a new B3 chipset that supports Ivy Bridge and has
BIOS v2.10.

No more rc6 failures with this board.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1020733]

2012-10-22 Thread Mattst88
I'm still able to reproduce this bug, but it's gotten much harder to do
after updating from Gnome 3.2 to 3.4.

I updated my kernel and userspace and on Gnome 3.2 start up, the GPU
would reset completely reproducibly. I updated to Gnome 3.4 and the GPU
no longer hangs on reset, but after a long time of use, I will get
dropped MMIO writes and the GPU will reset. I think I've had to leave
the system on for more than a day to see this.

I tried Ben's 450mV work-around, but it didn't help since my system
wasn't affected. I tried the drm/i915: Fix GT_MODE default value
patch, but it didn't help (my system did /not/ have the doc-suggested
bits set in GT_MODE). I tried to update my BIOS (from v1.50 to v2.10)
but my system's chipset is revision B2 which is apparently too old to
update with a v2.10 BIOS that supports Ivy Bridge.

I have not tried disabling contexts yet, but since I have experienced
this RC6 bug ever since RC6 was first enabled by default (~kernel 3.3?)
and contexts were only implemented in 3.6, I highly doubt they're
involved. I'll test with contexts disabled in any case.

What more can I try? It's significantly more difficult now that Gnome
3.4 doesn't reliably trigger the reset.

  Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Selecting the Molecule screensaver freezes my PC completely. It says
Creating molecule or something like that, but it stays there, fully
unresponsive to any keyboard input, and I can't click the Force Quit
button either. Happens every time I try to select it, requires me to
  hard reset.

I think it might be a compatibility problem with my graphics card.
It's an ATI Rage 128 AGP card. This is a clean install of Ubuntu.

The bug also affects the 1002:5046 cards.
