Hi,
I have now reinstalled lirc and followed the upgrade steps to no avail. No
response from irw. However purge helped:
apt-get remove --purge lirc
Had to copy mce.conf:
cp /usr/share/lirc/configs/mce.conf /etc/lirc/lircd.conf.d
Now everything is back to normal, irw gives a response and so does

Public bug reported:
The hp mce remote was working fine with kodi running on Ubuntu 16.10. After
upgrade to 17.04,
the remote does not respond anymore. Loads the driver, dmesg looks ok. I
managed to get it to respond a couple of times after a reboot by unpluging an
plugging back in.
Same here. on Upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10, syslog is filling up.
