I suspect this was actually due to fixes in wocky, perhaps http://cgit.freedesktop.org/wocky/commit/?id=969a12f4e13a46f0ccef3f125232811a32b94aa0 (Require nodes to always have a namespace). I installed telepathy-gabble (0.9.15-1~ppa10.04+1) from the ppa mentioned above, and it fixed everything.
