[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1967204] [NEW] "help" app (yelp) just displays a blank window with "Ubuntu Desktop Guide" title on rpi

2022-03-30 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

I'm using the jammy beta (20220329) image running on an rpi4 8GB
clicking on the "help" app in the dock launches a window with the title "Ubuntu
Desktop Guide". The icons for forward/back, bookmarks, search, etc. are all
visible at the top of the window, but everything else in the window is just a
blank white area. On amd64, however, it seems to work fine.

I also noticed that if I move the mouse around through the area, the
pointer sometimes changes, and if I hover there for a second, a tooltip
comes up with things like "Start applications" or "Visual overview of
Gnome". I can click on these and it seems to take me forward to
something, because the back icon is no longer greyed out, but I still
can't see any content in the window.

I noticed this while testing the beta jammy image (20220329) on arm64,

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1957455] [NEW] Failure connecting to ap setup with a mode

2022-01-12 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

One of the tests we run for the network manager snap uncovered this
problem on uc18 with network-manager 1.10 snap, but I've also been able
to reproduce it in the previous snap version, as well as with core20 and
with focal.

On a laptop with intel wifi card, we installed a fresh image (see above) and
network-manager snap or deb as appropriate. The most straightforward way to
run the test we are using, for example with Ubuntu core 18:
$ sudo snap install checkbox --devmode --channel=uc18/stable

After it is installed:
$ cd /snap/checkbox18/current/providers/plainbox-provider-checkbox/bin
$ ./wifi_nmcli_test.py ap wlan0 a

NB: in the above example, replace wlan0 with the correct device if it's
something else, and replace uc18 track and checkbox18 directory as
appropriate, if you are using uc20 or focal use the uc20 track.

This test uses network-manager to create an ap, then tries to connect to
it.

Output with uc18: https://pastebin.canonical.com/p/CBFqj2Mcgr/
Output with focal: https://pastebin.canonical.com/p/4Shm6pWzpM/

This test can also run in bg mode, and works fine with that. So the test
itself works, and network-manager seems to be able to create an AP in
some mode, but it doesn't seem to work with a

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1797636] [NEW] unattended do-release-upgrade to cosmic asks about /etc/gdm3/custom.conf

2018-10-12 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to do some automated testing that involved upgrading a system
from bionic to cosmic, so I need it to not ask for user input.

Before running do-release-upgrade, the system got a fresh dist-upgrade
and reboot.

To avoid interactive responses, I'm using:
$ sudo do-release-upgrade -d -f DistUpgradeViewNonInteractive

Part way through the upgrade, I do get prompted for something though:
Setting up gdm3 (3.30.1-1ubuntu1) ...

Configuration file '/etc/gdm3/custom.conf'
 ==> Modified (by you or by a script) since installation.
 ==> Package distributor has shipped an updated version.
   What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:
Y or I  : install the package maintainer's version
N or O  : keep your currently-installed version
  D : show the differences between the versions
  Z : start a shell to examine the situation
 The default action is to keep your current version.
*** custom.conf (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ?

I also found this in /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log:
2018-10-12 16:36:44,910 WARNING got a conffile-prompt from dpkg for file:
'/etc/gdm3/custom.conf'
2018-10-12 16:36:49,915 ERROR error 'a bytes-like object is required, not
'str'' when trying to write to the conffile

Shouldn't the '-f DistUpgradeViewNonInteractive' have prevented this
from getting asked?

** Affects: gdm3 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1716278] Re: gnome-screensaver crashed with SIGSEGV in XForceScreenSaver()

This is a system that's gone through upgrades from at least xenial
through artful. I never manually enabled it, but it could have been
included in an older session along the way and carried forward if
nothing stopped it.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1360368] [NEW] upowerd health check failures

2014-08-22 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

We ran baselines of many processes on an idle nexus4 using health-check

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1240530] [NEW] software-center crashed with signal 5 in _XReadEvents()

2013-10-16 Thread Paul Larson
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1211887 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1211887

Public bug reported:

Software center seems to crash on the first launch after install.

I hit this on the saucy rc image from 20131016
The install I had done was amd64 desktop on virtualbox with free software only,
no network connection.
Once booted after installing, I attached the network, brought up a terminal and
ran apt-get update. Everything looked fine, so I tried running software center
and hit this crash.

Running a second time, software center seems to come up ok though.

Title:
  software-center crashed with signal 5 in _XReadEvents()

Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Software center seems to crash on the first launch after install.

  I hit this on the saucy rc image from 20131016
  The install I had done was amd64 desktop on virtualbox with free software
only, no network connection.
  Once booted after installing, I attached the network, brought up a terminal
and ran apt-get update. Everything looked fine, so I tried running software
center and hit this crash.

  Running a second time, software center seems to come up ok though.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1231091] [NEW] Screenreader starts, but quits working in live session on install

2013-09-25 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

Image: 20130925

I started the image and let it boot to the gui selector for live session
or install only. When the drum sound played, I pressed ctrl-s to start
the screen reader and heard the familiar welcome to orca sound, and it
read the options to me. From there, I started the live session, and
went into the installer, but orca would not read any of the screens. I
also started a terminal window and noticed that it says window when I
move the mouse over the unity launcher icon, and unity dash when I
click on it, but nothing in the terminal is read to me either. So I
don't think this is limited to just ubiquity.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1229416] [NEW] Screenreader does not come up on install

2013-09-23 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

Image: 20130923.1

On the amd64 install, I'm starting from the usb stick and trying to
activate the screenreader when it gets to the screen to choose between
live session and install. Normally there is some audio of drums that
plays at this point, but I never hear it. I can normally activate the
screen reader by pressing ctrl-s at this screen, and would expect to
hear welcome to orca, but that doesn't seem to do anything.

After starting the live session, I still don't hear any evidence of the
screen reader, but if I go out to a terminal and check ps, I see that it
appears to be running. I can hear other audio just fine, for example,
by doing the test sounds from the audio control.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1177632] Re: gnome-screensaver causes jump in compiz events

2013-06-24 Thread Paul Larson
The point of the testing is to use eventstat to find things causing lots of
wakeups, which could have an impact on power consumption and battery life. So
working around the bug would kind of defeat the purpose of testing.
In this case, it's running kvm so it isn't a real video card.

Title:
  gnome-screensaver causes jump in compiz events

Status in “gnome-screensaver” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  I have some automated tests that run eventstat to track the average
  events/second for all running processes. I've been having trouble
  getting the data to stabilize and showed it to Colin King recently,
  who seems to have found the culprit. If you look at
  https://jenkins.qa.ubuntu.com/job/eventstat-raring-desktop-amd64
  -install-idle-vm/95/artifact/eventstat.csv you will see that on line
  8, the events/second for compiz jumps dramatically. Move over a few
  columns and you'll see that this sudden rise corresponds to gnome-
  screensaver activating.

  This is on a freshly installed raring vm, so it should be the default
  screensaver.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1124214] [NEW] X does not start on alternate after installing in virtualbox

2013-02-13 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

After installing the 20120213.1 alternate image for precise, I should
see X come up on the first boot, but instead it's leaving me at a

In the Xorg.0.log, it seems to be having trouble loading the vboxvideo module

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1124230] [NEW] Language selector comes up after 12.04.2 rc candidate installation in english

2013-02-13 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

After installing the 20120213.1 alternate image in english, I log in and
see the language selector come up telling me I have incomplete language
support. I installed in english, with the system connected to the
internet during the install. From the dialog that comes up, it seems to
indicate that English (United States) and English are present, just
not the ones for UK, Australia, or Canada, which is what I would expect
so I'm not sure what it thinks is missing.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1124660] [NEW] Precise 20120213 i386 live session fails in virtualbox

2013-02-13 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

I get to the graphical screen that asks me to choose to try ubuntu or install.
Choosing to install seems to go along ok, but if I choose the live session it
takes me to a blank screen with a dialot saying

The system is running in low-graphics mode
Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected
correctly. You will need to configure these yourself.

When I press ok, I get the following options:
* Run in low-graphics mode for just one session
* Reconfigure graphics
* Troubleshoot the error
* Exit to console login

Choosing to run in low graphics mode tells me to Stand by one minute while the
display restarts... then goes to a black console screen with no X as before
the fix for libpciaccess in bug #1122072.
The version of libpciaccess0 on this system is 0.12.902-1ubuntu0.1

Choosing to reconfigure graphics doesn't get me to a running desktop
either.

On amd64 I am able to boot into the live session under virtualbox

Title:
  Precise 20120213 i386 live session fails in virtualbox

Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  I get to the graphical screen that asks me to choose to try ubuntu or
install. Choosing to install seems to go along ok, but if I choose the live
session it takes me to a blank screen with a dialot saying

  The system is running in low-graphics mode
  Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected
correctly. You will need to configure these yourself.

  When I press ok, I get the following options:
  * Run in low-graphics mode for just one session
  * Reconfigure graphics
  * Troubleshoot the error
  * Exit to console login

  Choosing to run in low graphics mode tells me to Stand by one minute while
the display restarts... then goes to a black console screen with no X as
before the fix for libpciaccess in bug #1122072.
  The version of libpciaccess0 on this system is 0.12.902-1ubuntu0.1

  Choosing to reconfigure graphics doesn't get me to a running desktop
  either.

  On amd64 I am able to boot into the live session under virtualbox

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1122072] Re: [Precise on VirtualBox] Fatal server error: no screen found in Xorg.0.log

2013-02-12 Thread Paul Larson
Seems to be a regression from 12.04.1. Tried this with 12.04.1 and it
works fine with that release, but on the same setup it fails with
current isos.

Title:
  [Precise on VirtualBox] Fatal server error: no screen found in
  Xorg.0.log

Status in “libpciaccess” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  Without this libpciaccess fix xserver-xorg-video-vesa will not function
correctly in virtualbox or on Intel GPUs when vesa is forced (i915 not loaded
in the kernel, as can happen on newer hardware without kernel support) when
using the Quantal X backport stack that is in 12.04.2.

  This requires 3 commits from upstream libpciaccess git, all contained in
0.13.1 that is in quantal, which is why the bug never manifested there.

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/lib/libpciaccess/commit/?id=f550c1347d3518874fe1c1d417a57322ee6b52db

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/lib/libpciaccess/commit/?id=b16336c0b389ace07f7418f5a021bfbc68fec2b6
 (which fixes the previous commit on ARM)

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/lib/libpciaccess/commit/?id=d2dc9f9daa45504f035b169aba94d0b154fd29f0

  [Test Case]
  Try to boot 12.04.2 in a virtualbox VM without guest extensions so vesa is
used.
  If working, X will start and the desktop will come up normally.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1084064] Re: Can not ssh to raring VM's using hostname

2012-11-29 Thread Paul Larson
ignore the .local stuff, that's just avahi madness and doesn't seem to be
related. Here's what I'm seeing locally when I try this:
I'm noticing from the dnsmasq server that in the leases file, if I start a
quantal vm I see the hostname. I also see the hostname pop up in the syslog.
If I start up a raring vm though, I don't see the hostname ever come across. I
went to a raring vm and ran dhclient by hand, and everything worked. The
hostname was sent with the dhcp request, and I could access the system by
sshing or pinging the hostname alone. Running dhcpclient alone uses the
default config under /etc though. With NetworkManager in the picture though, a
different config file is used:

$ ps -ef |grep dhclient
root   733   693  0 21:44 ?00:00:00 /sbin/dhclient -d -4 -sf
/usr/lib/NetworkManager/nm-dhcp-client.action -pf
/run/sendsigs.omit.d/network-manager.dhclient-eth0.pid -lf
/var/lib/dhclient/dhclient-0f1c7278-f6f0-4447-a3a7-40c0c7c300d6-eth0.lease -cf
/var/run/nm-dhclient-eth0.conf eth0

$ cat /var/run/nm-dhclient-eth0.conf
# Created by NetworkManager

option rfc3442-classless-static-routes code 121 = array of unsigned integer 8;
option ms-classless-static-routes code 249 = array of unsigned integer 8;
option wpad code 252 = string;

also request rfc3442-classless-static-routes;
also request ms-classless-static-routes;
also request wpad;
also request ntp-servers;

If I look another system I have, I see the addition of this line in that file:
send host-name myhostname; # added by NetworkManager

So it looks like nm is generating this file without putting the line in
to send the hostname.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1067040] [NEW] Incomplete language support after networkless install

2012-10-15 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

After installing quantal-desktop image in english without the network attached,
I see a warning that I have incomplete language support. If I continue, it
brings up language-selector and tells me:
No language information available
The system does not have information about the available languages yet. Do you
want to performa a network update to get them now?

If I allow it, it tells me that I am missing the following pieces:
wbritish

myspell-en-gb
myspell-en-za
openoffice.org-hyphenation
hyphen-en-us
mythes-en-us

I haven't seen this cause any issues so far, it just seems odd that the
language support would not be complete for english on the iso.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1062440] [NEW] PandaBoard audio loud pops after playing sound over headphone jack

2012-10-05 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

On quantal images, most recently reproduced on panda armhf desktop omap4
image from 20121005

This is easily reproducible when using the headphone jack and any audio,
even the sound test from sound settings easily reproduces the problem.
Usually after a sound plays, but sometimes at the beginning of another
one, there is a loud pop over the headphone jack. If I switch the
audio output to hdmi, I do not have this problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1056225] [NEW] Amazon videos don't play

2012-09-25 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

On quantal beta2 (20120925) I installed 32bit using wubi and tried to launch a
video from the video lens after installing flashplayer. When it tries to play
the movie, I get an error saying:
Player Update
An error occurred and your player could not be updated. This is likely because
your Flash Player or Browser needs to be updated. This update is required to
play back this video.

(screenshot attached)

I've also tested this on a 64bit install that was once working, and now
is not. It seems that maybe amazon updated something that requires a
newer version of flash than we currently have?

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.10
Package: flashplugin-installer 11.2.202.238ubuntu1
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.5.0-15.23-generic 3.5.4
