I'm having a similar issue, mentioned as duplicate of this bug report.
Whenever I go beyond 50% brightness it freezes with:
The offending signal was notify on Gjs_status_backlight_SliderItem
0x5566a1978a70.
Same happens when booting if the value is above 50%.

Since I upgraded to Ubuntu 23.10 the GUI is unresponsive during, maybe 30
seconds, then it works perfectly fine.
I connected via SSH to see what was happening in the logs when that happens and

System freeze, while just using Google Chrome on 5-6 websites (including Gmail,
no WebGL, no Flash)
no CTRL+ALT+F* effect, even ALT+Syst+REISUB does not react.
Had to *hard* reboot (5s power button)...

Forget about the REISUB not working, I might have mistyped it.
(On some laptops SysRq is accessible only by pressing 'Fn'. In this case the
combination is a bit trickier: hold 'Alt', hold 'Fn', hold 'SysRq', release
'Fn', press key.)
