[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1870609] Re: decimal point problem in ibus-libpinyin

2020-04-03 Thread Ping-Wu
Tried the PPA; works great!

(before)

3 除于 6 等于 0。5。(3 divided by 6 equals 0.5.)

(after)

3 除于 6 等于 0.5。(3 divided by 6 equals 0.5.)

!!!

Ubuntu 20.04 is looking very good. At least as far as Chinese input is
concerned.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1847021] Re: Cannot input Chinese if only "Chinese (Intelligent Pinyin)" is set

2020-04-03 Thread Ping-Wu
Many ibus-libpinyin users in the Chinese Ubuntu forum have reported very
satisfactory results--they have expressed very pleasant surprised that
this tool has improved SO MUCH! However, there is one more very
important update that is still not in the current version. If anyone is
still doing the packaging, I will be more than happy to elaborate.

Ubuntu 19.04. If I only install "Chinese (Intelligent Pinyin)", after

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1847021] Re: Cannot input Chinese if only "Chinese (Intelligent Pinyin)" is set

2019-10-08 Thread Ping-Wu
Deleting the cache also wipes out the personal dictionary, which is a
critical component in libpinyin and pinyin operations.

The version of libpinyin in 19.10 has been moved to 2.3; whereas it
stays in 2.2 in 19.04. My experience is, ibus-libpinyin still has
stability problems in 19.04.

The dictionary built in conjunction with libpinyin 2.2 cannot be ported
to version 2.3. I don't know whether this problem has been solved since
I have not been using 19.04 for a while (& have deleted from my
machine).

Since the dictionary is such an important part in Chinese input, I
strongly suggest using 19.10.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1847021] Re: Cannot input Chinese if only "Chinese (Intelligent Pinyin)" is set

2019-10-07 Thread Ping-Wu
I never experienced the same kind of problem with ibus-libpinyin in
Ubuntu 19.04. But since 19.04 is going to be EOL'd in a couple of
months, I have no interest whatsoever in wasting my very limited time
beating a soon-to-be-dead-horse visiting this (to me) non-issue.
(Suppose we find the problem, so what?!)

Please focus our attention on Ubuntu 19.10, which will be serving as the
base for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. The daily built is very stable (the beta
version has small glitches, try the daily built). I use ibus-libpinyin
routinely, no problem.

Please keep in mind that Ubuntu 20.04 LTS is only 6 months away. If we
screw up again, we be damned!

(My current desktop has 18.04LTS/19.10 dual boot.)

Another good idea! English (US).

BTW, when I clicked on the language update, Ubuntu would install a bunch of
non-US English locales. Totally unnecessary, annoying, unprofessional, and
confusing. Probably this should go to another bug report?

2019-07-03 Thread Ping-Wu
Oops. False alarm. The Chinese input frame seems to be working OK in
190703 daily build.  However, the first entry of the input method is
labeled as "汉语“ (Chinese)。 Either that should be changed to "英语”
(English),because it is indeed an English keyboard. Or assign
ibus-libpinyin as the input method for "汉语" and remove the ibus-libpinyin
("智能拼音")entry. The latter is, of course, preferred. Please see attached
screenshot.

Anyway, huge improvement!

Title:
Default IBus input method ignored in live session

Status in gnome-settings-daemon package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in gnome-settings-daemon source package in Bionic:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  If you

  * start your computer with a bootable USB stick or DVD with the
18.04.2 desktop ISO

  * wait until Ubiquity's welcome screen shows up (only possible on
systems with legacy BIOS; bug #1766047)

  * select a language which requires an input method for typing

  * click the "Try Ubuntu" button

no IBus method is made easily available via the input source indicator
in the session you enter. If you for instance select zh_CN as language
and "Try Ubuntu", you would expect to enter a session with the
"Intelligent Pinyin" method included among the available input
  sources.

The proposed fix should ensure that an IBus method is always available
in "live sessions" in languages which are prepared for it.

  [Test Case]

  1. Install ibus-libpinyin and make sure that "Intelligent Pinyin" is
not included among your available input sources.

  2. Generate the Chinese locale:

 sudo locale-gen zh_CN.UTF-8

  3. Add to ~/.profile this line:

 export LC_CTYPE=zh_CN.UTF-8

  4. Remove the gnome-settings-daemon stamp file:

 rm ~/.local/share/gnome-settings-daemon/input-sources-converted

  5. Log out and log in again.

=> Find that the "Intelligent Pinyin" method was not added (since the
sources already in the list prevented it from being added).

  6. Install gnome-settings-daemon from bionic-proposed.

  7. Repeat step 4 and 5.

=> Find that the "Intelligent Pinyin" method was added.

  [Regression Potential]

The proposed upload includes a small change which specifically
addresses the issue as described above. I find that the risk for
  adverse side effects is low.

Intelligent Pinyin, also could not input Chinese.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1786344] Re: Default IBus input method ignored in live session

2019-07-03 Thread Ping-Wu
Tried 19.10 by selecting simplified Chinese during booting the daily build
iso. Was able to toggle (shift-key) between Chinese and English inputs.
This is good!

However, the ability to input Chinese characters was activated only after I
clicked on the third option "汉语(智能拼音)“。 For a Chinese user, this extra step
should not be necessary.

Also as shown in the attached screenshot, the first (top) two entries are
confusing and have no function. Should be removed.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1768166] Re: Random crashes

2019-06-19 Thread Ping-Wu
I tried your ibus-pinyin ppa; the problem still persists. I will explain
that in better detail later. Basically, after 18.04 (no problem there),
ibus-pinyin fails to update the hierarchy of an "entered" word or phase in
the "candidate list". This is one of the most important features of a
Chinese input tool. Without it, thhis tool is unusable.

The Chinese Ubuntu forum member who helped testing ibus-libpinyin 1.11
(百草谷居--btw, he is also a CPA)mentioned two important features that are
lacking in ibus-libpinyin which actually also prevented him from using this
input tool (except for doing this test). Both features are available (&
kicking) in ibus-pinyin.

However, my most critical concern is always about stability. I have used
the same old ibus-pinyin Chinese input tool since 18.04 daily built first
became available and have not had any problem. As I mentioned in previous
communications, for some unknown reason ibus-pinyin doesn't work well in
Fedora/RedHat (though it can be installed without any problem), in reasons
probably similar to why ibus-pinyin is not working well in 19.04/19.10.
This is the main reason that I am not too thrilled about Fedora.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1768166] Re: Random crashes

2019-06-18 Thread Ping-Wu
I followed the steps as described in #24 and have tested the new ibus-
libpinyin 1.11 in 18.04.2 for more than two weeks. So far, I have not
encountered any sudden crash problem as experienced in 1.10.

Moving the proposed upgrade of ibus-libpinyin and associated
dependencies to bionic-updates should be a no-brainer. As I mentioned
prior, I couldn't find anyone in the Chinese Ubuntu forum who is using
ibus-libpinyin. No one can tolerate an input tool that will
"eventually" crash--and cannot be recovered unless the user possesses
certain CLI skills and is willing to delete the user-established
vocabulary that is the most important part of a Chinese input method.

That said, the most important question is, whether the upgrade of ibus-
libpinyin as proposed adversely affects other packages? I have not
noticed that upgrade of ibus-libpinyin as proposed affected any of my
daily operations. One of the Chinese Ubuntu forum members ("百草谷居士") who
agreed to participate in the testing, also expressed that there is no
interference with other packages. This is what he wrote:

"功能上还是老问题:不支持拼音输入特殊符号;紧随数字的逗号和句号不能自动转换为半角符号。
然后发现汉字里面夹杂了不少表情符号,我觉得奇怪,既然可以夹杂表情符号,为什么不能加上特殊符号呢
目前在终端、gnome桌面、geany、libreoffice中使用正常。"

(No problem with gnome-terminal, gnome desktop apps, geany,
libreoffice.)

With the above-mentioned positive results, I recommend that the proposed
move should go ahead. Indeed, if Ubuntu wants to regain its China
market, this is a necessary first step.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

ibus-libpinyin has proved to crash far too often. One or more files in
~/.cache/ibus/libpinyin get corrupted somehow, and emptying that
directory allows the user to keep using ibus-libpinyin.

In disco (and eoan) ibus-libpinyin 1.11.0 and libpinyin 2.2.2 are
present, and the number of crashes has been reduced significantly:

  https://errors.ubuntu.com/?package=ibus-libpinyin=month

  Upstream ChangeLog ibus-libpinyin:
  --
  version 1.11.0
  * fixes keypad decimal
  * fixes emoji candidates
  * support configurable opencc config

  version 1.10.92
  * fixes Enter handling

  version 1.10.91
  * support ime.register_trigger in lua extension
  * support predicted candidates
  * support emoji input

  version 1.10.0
  * bug fixes

  version 1.9.91
  * migrate to use GSettings
  * fixes lyx short cut issue

  version 1.9.3
  * translate input method name in ibus menu

  Upstream ChangeLog libpinyin:
  -
  version 2.2.2
  * minor fixes

  version 2.2.1
  * fixes predicted candidates

  version 2.2.0
  * bug fixes

The proposal is to backport the disco versions of those packages to
bionic and cosmic in an attempt to prevent crashes. Proposed uploads
  are available in this PPA:

  https://launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/+archive/ubuntu/ibus-libpinyin

  [Test Case]

  * Install from {bionic,cosmic}-proposed:
    - libpinyin13
    - libpinyin-data
    - ibus-libpinyin

  * Use "Intelligent Pinyin" for typing and confirm that no new issues
    show up when doing so.

(This is apparently not a confirmation that the upload really fixes
the bug. To compensate for that, we will await testing of the
-proposed packages by a few Chinese users before considering the
  uploads verified.)

  Reverse dependencies

Besides ibus-libpinyin, also fcitx-libpinyin and ibus-libzhuyin depend on
packages belonging to the libpinyin source package. So additional test measures
are:

  * Install fcitx-libpinyin and ibus-libzhuyin.

  * Use both those tools for typing Chinese, and confirm that you don't
observe any adverse effects of the libpinyin upgrade.

  [Regression Potential]

The changes are mostly bug fixes, so the regression risk should be
limited. Also consider that the starting point is a rather unstable
  functionality.

NOTE TO SRU TEAM: Please let the SRU age for longer than 7 days to get
as much testing as possible. There do not seem to be too many risky
changes carried, but such jumps in upstream versions always carry some
  regression-risk.

  [Original description]

I have experienced random ibus-libpinyin crashes in bionic. I cannot
reproduce it, but it occurred at least a few times, even after the
official bionic release. Same crashes were also reported in the
  Ubuntu Chinese forum.

Currently, the workaround is to delete the ~/.cache/ibus/libpinyin
  folder.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1768166] Re: Random crashes

2019-06-01 Thread Ping-Wu
Duly noted.

I am hitting a brick wall in the Chinese Ubuntu forum. It turns out that
nobody is using the ibus-libpinyin input method.

Would you be interested in using, as part of your daily routine, an input
tool that can suddenly crash and cannot be recovered until you delete all
the vocabulary that you have painstakingly built? I won't blame them.

Switching to a different Chinese input method is much more involved than
you may think. Even temporarily. I might be able to personally force one
or two Chinese Ubuntu forum participants to test your proposed changes.
But that's about it for now.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1768166] Re: Random crashes

2019-06-01 Thread Ping-Wu
I have been hearing this swan song for several years now that ibus-pinyin
is being or has been deprecated. Actually it is a miracle that ibus-pinyin
still works in Ubuntu--*and only in Ubuntu*. For unknown and very strange
reasons, I can never make ibus-pinyin work in Fedora, or even in Debian.
Indeed, this is the main reason that I am sticking with Ubuntu, even though
I was one of the very first supporters of the Fedora Linux when it was
being developed at the University of Hawaii.

Most Linux users in the Chinese Ubuntu forum actually use Sogou pinyin
(搜狗拼音), this is a proprietary program running on the fcitx input
framework. Sogou pinyin is definitely better than ibus-libpinyin (very few
people actually use ibus-libpinyin), but is inferior to ibus-pinyin in
terms of speed and stability. We have a pro bono project in Honolulu
teaching seniors to be proficient in computers. Since many of our students
are of Chinese descent, our program also includes teaching them how to
input Chinese characters. Ibus-pinyin has been our choice of Chinese input
tool because of its snappiness and being trouble-free. You would think
that these two characters should also make ibus-pinyin a favorable Chinese
input engine? But since so few people in China are using Linux desktops,
logic doesn't make sense. It is the so-called upstream developers (mainly
Peng Wu of Red Hat), or the lack thereof (ibus-pinyin developers), that
prevails.

Based on my interactions with many Chinese Ubuntu forum elders, I am NOT
surprised that the upstream developers do not think highly of ibus-pinyin.
The reasons are three-fold: first, they are not using the right distro
(i.e., not using Ubuntu); second, they did not install a Ubuntu-specific
ibus-pinyin database (i.e., system-wide vocabulary); and third, they have
not used ibus-pinyin long enough (i.e., they do not have their own user
vocabulary).

I think upstream developers do not like ibus-pinyin also because it does
not have many bells and whistles (e.g., inputting emojis which I absolutely
could care less). But ibus-pinyin also has some of the critical features
that are lacking in ibus-libpinyin. For example, the latter cannot
conveniently input special symbols (many in the Chinese Ubuntu forum think
this a main reason not to use ibus-libpinyin). Also, ibus-libpinyin will
treat a decimal point as a Chinese period, such as 19。04 (which should be
19.04). But most important AFAIC, ibus-pinyin uses a simple,
straightforward sqlite database structure that is very easy to comprehend.
How the table-lookup database is structured in ibus-libpinyin is
complicated and undocumented.

Many members of the Chinese Ubuntu forum have a very negative attitude
towards ibus-libpinyin partly because of the personality of its principal
developer Peng Wu. They have always complained about being contemptuously
snobbed when they visited the ibus-libpinyin GitHub forum (many were told
to switch to Fedora). I myself also could never get a straight answer from
Peng Wu.

I sincerely hope that your effort to make ibus-libpinyin stable ("stable"
in an absolute sense) will help attracting more users--ibus-libpinyin in
specific and Ubuntu in general. I will definitely use it at least
occasionally to make sure that everything is OK. Should Ubuntu
powers-that-be make an unfortunate decision and drop ibus-pinyin from its
archive, I will simply freeze my version of Ubuntu at 18.04, which is now
turning out to be exceptionally good.

"ibus-libpinyin" should be --ibus-pinyin--.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1768166] Re: Random crashes

2019-05-20 Thread Ping-Wu
As I stated in the Chinese Ubuntu forum, I almost always stick to only the
LTS versions of Ubuntu. I made an exception wrt 18.04 LTS and moved up to
19.04 and even 19.10 because ibus-libpinyin 1.11 is not available in
18.04. However, 19.04 and 19.10 have their own problems and are not
recommended at least for now.

Ubuntu 18.10. Initial install in en_US. When I tried to create a new

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1789665] Re: Intelligent Pinyin not recognized as a Chinese input source

2018-10-13 Thread Ping-Wu
Still no default Chinese input method was selected when booted into the
Chinese locale. Very inconvenient and unexpected. Should follow the
16.04 approach in which libpinyin is selected as the default Chinese
input method. The user can subsequently change to his or her preferred
method.

Bug description:
Intelligent Pinyin (the ibus-libpinyin package) is the default input
source for Simplified Chinese. When the zh_CN.UTF-8 locale is present,
Intelligent Pinyin is supposed to be shown in the Chinese input source
sub menu in Region & Language. However, that's not the case with the
latest g-c-c version, but it's shown under "Other" instead.

The expected behavior returns if I downgrade to g-c-c
  1:3.28.2-0ubuntu0.18.04.2 (the current bionic version).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1786344] Re: Default IBus input method ignored in live session

2018-09-24 Thread Ping-Wu
Tested 0923 daily built. When booted under the "简体中文" (simplified
Chinese) locale, "汉语“ (Chinese) was shown as the default input method,
but still cannot input Chinese.

There is no option to select "智能拼音" (ibus-libpinyin) when I clicked on
汉语。

To use 智能拼音,I needed to go to "其它“ (Others)then made the selection.
This is very weird to say the least.

However, I think 18.10 looks bright. When this problem is getting
solved, I suggest that, as a default, we check all the dictionaries in
the ibus-libpinyin "dictionary option" ("字典“)。 Many decision makers (in
China at least) determine which Linux distro is better by how fast they
can type. Turning on the dictionaries makes a whole world difference.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1786344] Re: 18.10 镜像无法输入中文

2018-08-28 Thread Ping-Wu
I am most interested in the LiveUSB (iso image). This is the only way I
can interest my friends to try Ubuntu. I will try to install the 18.10
daily built probably over this weekend, but, again, the iso image is the
only marketing tool, as I can never induce anyone to try to do the actual
installation on their machine.

Previously I would prepare customized LiveUSBs & send them to those Ubuntu
wannabes. But because of spyware and liability concerns, this has become
impractical. Anyone who is interested in exploring Ubuntu will be shocked
to find out that they couldn't input Chinese from the LiveUSB. (Again,
many thanks to you, Gunnar, for timely fixing this serious problem in
18.04!)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1786344] Re: 18.10 镜像无法输入中文

2018-08-25 Thread Ping-Wu
I need to point out that although I mentioned that "the pinyin input
engine has been deprecated", this is inaccurate. Indeed, ibus-pinyin,
with some simple tweaking, is robust and fast and works very well in
18.04 (I think I should thank you, Gunnar!) Actually ibus-pinyin is my
preferred Chinese input engine, more so than ibus-libpinyin. As far as I
am concerned, this is what makes Ubuntu stands out relative to
Fedora/RedHat, etc.

correctly, in bug #1756205, sunpinyin was selected as the default Chinese
input engine but was not included in the iso. Once you change the default
Chinese input engine to ibus-libpinyin (which was included in the iso),
problem solved.

In 18.10, however, the problems are two-fold:

1. When booted into the simplified Chinese locale, "汉语" (Hanyu,
Chinese)shows up as the input method, but there is no package corresponding
to hanyu-pinyin. Based on the content of the iso manifest, either Hanyu
should be linked to ibus-libpinyin, or we should simply use ibus-libpinyin
as the default input engine when booted into the simplified Chinese
locale. (In the Linux world, Hanyu-pinyin usually means "pinyin", but
since the pinyin input engine has been deprecated, we should use
ibus-libpinyin instead.)

2. The input method dialog window is also seriously flawed. It has
improved somewhat from my initial post, but very awkward to use, if at
all. It is difficult to explain & you should try it yourself to see how
bad the problem is.

Anyway, this is a regression from 18.04.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1786344] Re: 18.10 镜像无法输入中文

2018-08-24 Thread Ping-Wu
I tested the 2018.08.24 iso, when booted into simplified Chinese locale,
I can now select 智能拼音 (smart pinyin) to input Chinese characters.
However, this should be the DEFAULT, i.e., a Chinese user should be able
to input Chinese characters when selecting the Chinese locale, WITHOUT
any additional step.

As the 1810 iso stands now, a Chinese locale user will NOT be able to
type Chinese. This is no way to try to promote/market Ubuntu in China.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1768166] Re: Random crashes

2018-07-21 Thread Ping-Wu
I don't know if upgrading via the ppa actually solved the random crash
problem, but I never had any crash after the upgrade. There could be other
reasons including gnome upgrades. But AT LEAST upgrading via the ppa did
not cause any negative effects. Thus, I suggest applying the
ibus-libpinyin upgrade to the newer version for Ubuntu 18.04.1.

Really look forward to testing it!

Also, when I click on the "manage installed language" dialog bar, I would

2018-02-21 Thread Ping-Wu
Correction: noto "sans" cjk sc seems to be OK when the same file is
exported to pdf. It's noto "serif" cjk sc that's having problems. (But
again, problem seems to have been solved in LibreOffice 6.0.1.)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1430893] Re: [FFe] Install Fcitx for Chinese users

2015-03-23 Thread Ping-Wu
Fcitx is much better than Ibus. This is a good move.

However, fcitx-m17n is not working. IBus-m17n works as expected.

[FFe] Install Fcitx for Chinese users

Bug description:
There are currently two main supported input method frameworks
available for CJK users: IBus (current default) and Fcitx. Both are
mature projects, but Fcitx is better suited to Chinese users than IBus
is, and is already the default in Ubuntu Kylin. IBus is increasingly
moving in the direction of removing features upstream like tracking
input state on a per-context basis. Also, the leading input method
provider in China with more than 300 million users, Sogou, only
supports Fcitx under Linux. Skinning support is non-existent in IBus.

We've added support for Fcitx on the same level as IBus in Unity, so
this FFe is a proposal to make Fcitx the default for Chinese locales
this cycle, as a transition towards making Fcitx the default for all
users next cycle. The changes should simply be seeding Fcitx and its
related packages on the CD image, as well as possible changes to im-
config. Those who have explicitly selected IBus as their chosen input
method should be unaffected; these changes will only affect new users,
and users who have never explicitly chosen an input method framework
  in their language settings.

Also, this FFe propose to make language-selector to install more input
method packages for Chinese users to their Fcitx equivalents
(currently IBus) when adding/completing Chinese language support.

Add: The problems observed in UbuntuKylin, as reported above, do not
appear to be duplicatable in (regular) Ubuntu 1404. Thus, those

2014-04-12 Thread Ping-Wu
Hi Gunnar and All,

Installed most recent (140412) Kylin build. Everything seems to be
working OK now (except for the need of a little tweaking in Chromium).

The original problem might have been caused by the repo sync problem
(Kylin repo was not available during the previous apt-get update).
Let's hope this is the case. Keep fingers crossed look forward to the
official release (as well as a stable Kylin repo).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1227034] Re: Default Chinese font changed to fonts-arphic-ukai after completing language support installation for zh-* locales

2014-04-11 Thread Ping-Wu
Hi Gunnar,

Thanks for the good work. The zh_CN locale now works as expected.

However, I wish I could say the same thing for the en_US locale. I am
attaching a screenshot showing that many Chinese characters were missing
(represented by rectangles) when running the Chromium browser.

I would like to note several other observations:

1. The missing Chinese characters were properly shown in Firefox.
I.e., No problem in Firefox, big problem in Chromium.

2. In Chromium, I cannot find Droid Sans Fallback fonts in the
(Setting -- Select default fonts).

3. I am also encountering missing Chinese character problems in using
Fcitx (Chinese input engine). This may render Ubuntu 14.04 unusable for
(at least) English locale users who have a need to input Chinese
characters.

4. In zh_CN.UTF-8 locale, the command ' fc-match sans ' returns

  DroidSansFallbackFull.ttf: Droid Sans Regular

4. In en_US.UTF-8 locale, the same command ' fc-match sans ' returns

 DejaVuSans.ttf: DejaVu Sans Book
