That dialog works fine in Lubuntu default theme because it has GTK3
support. Those engines you mention are not GTK3, they are GTK2, so the
Update Manager (compiled in GTK3) doesn't work fine with them.

  To reproduce start an lxde desktop with lubuntu on vivid. Then launch
  customize look and feel under prefrences in switch the widget to
  clearlooks. Then open software updater and have and notice if it finds
  updates to try and expand the detail on those updates you will not see
  the small triangle widget to expand it. Now in customize look and feel
  in the menu switch back to the default lubuntu in the menu and notice
  that the widgets reappear.

  
  I expected to see the small rectangular widgets on the update manager.

  On an old pentium 4 machine with i386 Upgrade to firefox 29 by sudo apt-get 
update  sudo apt-get dist-upgrade. Then close any open firefox and restart

all pages. on firefox 29 with the new interface. This makes it impossible to 
see what website you are currently on in the address bar.
